OLD HABITS DIE HARD 3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages Lynne Hunt My dearest sister Lynne went to join our Saviour on Friday 28th August after a battle so courageously fought. Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to my beautiful sister, an aunt of many, a mum and grandmother. It is so hard to find the words for a loss that feels so deep and so impossible to accept. Your suffering is now over and although we are left here with hearts full of sorrow and longing, I find comfort in imagining you reunited with Mum and Dad. What a beautiful homecoming that must have been - three souls together again, surrounded by love and peace. You leave behind so many precious memories, so much love, and a space in our lives that can never be filled. You were not just my sister; you were part of my heart, part of my life, and part of so many of my happiest memories. I will miss you more than words could ever say. I will miss your voice, your presence, your laughter, and simply knowing you were there . Your love will remain with us forever. You will live on in our hearts, in our memories, and in every little moment that reminds us of you. THURSDAY 3 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. JURASSIC PARK Steven Spielberg's blockbuster Jurassic Park will be shown as a tribute to Sam Neill who died in July. One of his best-known roles was in the film as the palaeontologist Alan Grant, one of a select group chosen to tour an island theme park populated by dinosaurs created from prehistoric DNA. While the park's mastermind, billionaire John Hammond assures everyone that the facility is safe, they find out otherwise when various ferocious predators break free and go on the hunt. - Jurassic Park remains an absolute thrill from a Spielberg in top form: Funny, scary, fast-moving and full of just-right details. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Alessandra Ferri, Roberto Bolle and Massimo Murru take the leading roles in George Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, a two-act ballet set to the music of Mendelssohn which premiered on 17 January 1962, for the New York City Ballet. It uses Mendelssohn's overture and incidental music for Shakespeare's play as well as other orchestral pieces. Act I follows the story of mortal lovers, feuding fairy royalty (Oberon and Titania), the mischievous Puck, and Nick Bottom transformed into an ass and in Act II there are parades, dancing and divertissements in honour of the newly married couples with classical choreography. - A Stunner! [The New Yorker] - Danced by three star-dancers in the main roles and a company that ranks among the best in the world, it guarantees first class entertainment. [Amazon] - The quality of the Italian lead dancers is excellent. A sturdy Oberon and enigmatic and radiant Titania are well matched and received a strong ovation at the close. The ballet's continuity and interest are often provided by the mischievous and vivacious Puck, whose miming actions are very clear. [MusicWeb International] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAY 10 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE CHORAL 1916. As war rages on the Western Front, the Choral Society in Ramsden, Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. The Society's ambitious committee, determined to press ahead, decides to recruit local young males to swell their ranks. They must also engage a new chorus master, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide, their best bet seems to be Dr.Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) -- driven, uncompromising, and recently returned from a career in Germany. As conscription papers start to arrive, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together and Guthrie decides that they shall perform Edward Elgar's recently composed masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius, a work chosen as much because it was not written by a German as for any other reason.... - Poignant and heart-warming stuff. [Guardian] Admission: $3.00 FRIDAY 11 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. ELGAR: THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS Some will remember performances of Elgar's great work in Bulawayo nearly forty years ago. This performance was presented in St.Paul's Cathedral in 1997 as part of the celebrations of the Cathedral's 300th anniversary and conducted by the late Sir Andrew Davis. MusicWeb International wrote that 'This committed performance of Elgar's masterpiece is worthy of the music and of the noble building in which it was given.' - Davis commands a monumental and profound performance, at turns terrifying, noble, and warmly personal. His absolute mastery over the large ensemble in the rolling, reverberant acoustics of St. Paul's Cathedral is an impressive technical accomplishment. [Amazon] - Davis conducts the work with a fine sense of drama and with evident affection and understanding. He paces the music adroitly. [MusicWeb International] - The orchestra and chorus were assembled beneath the dome and Andrew Davis himself stood on the memorial in the centre of the floor to Christopher Wren himself, thus seeming to marry together Elgar's masterpiece with Wren's and giving the television director ample opportunity to blend the music and the image together, made even more tangible by the effect on the music of the cavernous acoustic. This latter worked marvellously in the grandeur and power of "Praise To The Holiest" and in the driving clamour of the Demon's Chorus [Classical Net] THURSDAYS 17 & 24 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. DAVID COPPERFIELD This BBC adaptation of David Copperfield was critically acclaimed as faithfully capturing Charles Dickens' classic tale of an orphan navigating a harsh but colourful Victorian world and follows the protagonist's emotional journey from a traumatized child into a successful man and writer. The production featured the acting debut of Daniel Radcliffe as young David prior to his success as Harry Potter alongside an all-star cast including Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, Dawn French, Bob Hoskins, and Ian McKellen. - A brilliant latter-day adaptation of Dickens' autobiographical masterpiece that scores triumphs on all fronts. [IMDb] - Such quality acting, directing and producing always entertains, and this production of David Copperfield will remain up there with the best. Sheer Brilliance. [Amazon] - Viewers are treated to a scrumptious three-hour adaptation of Charles Dickens' semi-autobiographical novel David Copperfield that's as moving and inspiring as it is beautiful to watch.
