THE BULAWAYO FLOWER SELLERS

The Bulawayo Flower sellers outside the City Hall in Bulawayo have been an institution for as long as I have been alive and trust me that is an extremely long time !!

A favourite and enchanting tourist trap featured in every tourist publication on Bulawayo since the inception of the city.

Over there is Ma Moyo with her colourful buckets of baby's breath and carnations brought in fresh each day from the farm in Esigodini, on Fridays and Saturdays they have precious bunches of Saint John's Lillies.

There sits is old Willie Ndlovu with his half dead roses and the agapanthus he used to "borrow" on his way to work every morning !!

Staple essentials are the predictable ready made posies and wreaths which are so popular for weddings, funerals, just to say 'Farewell' or "I love you" or just to say "I love Life".

On the northern end of the City Hall mall are the curio sellers selling everything and anything in wood, wire or soapstone.

That awful rapscallion Solomon is still there! He adds four zeros onto the price of a wooden hippo the minute he hears an American accent, but will reduce it quickly if you speak even a word of Ndebele !!

At the end are the worm sellers who can discuss most knowledgeably the merits and de merits of the thin red worms as opposed to the fat brown earthworms in the art of catching tiger or bream at Kariba (in spite of the fact that they had never gone further than Nyamandhlovu in their lives !!

Sitting placidly in the warm winter sun are the very same ladies who have been there for years, day in and day out, legs stretched ramrod straight in front of them, crocheting and knitting doilies and tablecloths festooned with pretty beads.

Remember those little covers weighed down with blue, red or green beads, that are used to cover the milk and the sugar bowls back in the days when gentility was paramount

Still there are the touts and the tricksters, an integral part of the tableau of every society the world over, who rush up to you and drag you over to someone else's stall where they would expertly talk you into believing that this particular hand- carved bowl was exactly the one you needed to send to Aunty Clara in New Zealand, and then he quickly fixes his own inflated price, which included his cut of the takings!

The wire toy sellers are always popular, such ingenuity is displayed by these dextrous young men, who can fashion anything out of wire "borrowed " from someone's farm fence or from the telephone wires leading to someone's property !!

Artists, painters, sculptors, wood carvers, floral artists, an incredible wealth of talent lending great charm and depth to the very fabric of the City of Bulawayo.

THURSDAY 27 AUGUST AT 6.30 P.M. OCTOPUSSY
When MI6 agent 009 arrives dying at the British Embassy with a gold Faberge egg, which turns out to be a fake, MI6 sends James Bond to seek out the real egg's owner. He discovers that it's not only him that's interested in the real egg when it's put up for auction and is bought by rich exiled Afghan Prince, Kamal Khan. Bond's suspicions deepen when Kamal Khan meets with General Orlov, an insane Russian General who desires to conquer Europe
- One of the snazziest, wittiest productions in the history of the series. Washington Post]
- This finds Bond on better form than he's been for some time. The action sequences are tighter, the visual gags more inventive, and if the plot is no great shakes, the whole thing is served up with a decent approximation to the old panache. [Time Out London]
- Top tier Bond. One of the most rewatchable films in the franchise. [Reddit]
- Octopussy is perhaps the best combination of straight action and camp that the James Bond franchise has to offer. [CineFile]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 28 AUGUST AT N.B. 6.00 P.M. RICHARD STRAUSS: DER ROSENKAVALIER
Dame Felicity Lott died earlier in the year and three operas in which she took roles particularly associated with her will be shown over the coming months, starting with Der Rosenkavalier, a bitter-sweet 'comedy with music' (the librettist's own description) that is full of memorable waltz tunes and in the last act moves through broad farce to end with some of the most ravishingly lyrical music in all opera.
- Conductor Carlos Kleiber spoke of Felicity Lott as his ideal Marschallin and for many years she was unrivalled in the role. She does not wear her heart on her sleeve and her reticence makes her all the more telling and memorable. The other roles are hardly less distinguished and Kleiber gets some ravishing sounds from the Vienna Philharmonic; his reading is as Straussian and perfect as we are likely to encounter in this world. [The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music]
- Otto Schenk's now classic production for Vienna State Opera is truly splendid, elaborately crafted rococo sets, glorious costumes. [viennaoperareview.com]
Admission: $3.00

RE: REQUEST FOR DONATION OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY ARTISANS AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

IGANYANA ARTS AND CRAFTS

To continue expanding this important initiative, we kindly appeal to Morning Mirror for support through donations of reusable materials that can be transformed into high-quality handcrafted products. We would greatly appreciate donations of the following items:
- Scrap electric wire cables
- Fabric scraps and off-cuts
- MSC jewellery beads
- Reusable craft materials
- Other recyclable materials suitable for artistic production

These donated materials will enable our artisans to continue producing handcrafted items that generate sustainable livelihoods for families within our surrounding communities. They will also help us reduce waste through creative recycling and strengthen our conservation education programmes by showcasing how discarded materials can be given new purpose while supporting wildlife protection.

Your support would make a meaningful difference by helping community members develop valuable artistic skills, increase household incomes, and participate in conservation-driven enterprises. Every donation, regardless of its size, contributes directly to empowering local artisans and reinforcing the important message that communities can thrive while protecting Zimbabwe's rich natural heritage.
