Our Little Family was stationed in Botswana for three years and during this time in their lives, they thrived happily under the Gaborone umbrella. Apart from the incredible hospitality of the folk at Gabs, Gaborone undoubtedly has one of the most effective and nurturing cricket clubs for young players. CUBS Cricket Academy under the awesome leadership of Trymore Taruvinga, his dedicated wife and scorer Sylvia, and coaches Joe, Denias, Coach T, Clyde and Alex amongst others, has far reaching excellent cricket coverage over almost the entire country, even as far as Francistown, Maun and Hansie. They offer professional coaching for kids as young as 4yrs to 13yrs at Junior level and 14yrs to club Cricket at senior level plus Tours, Tournaments and Clinics. A weekend's cricketing in Gabs is a function that is wholeheartedly encompassed and enjoyed by the whole community. The braais and braai masters arrive in full, deck chairs, gazebos, rugs and braziers, Moms, (beautiful Moms in Gabs!!) Dads and all the kiddies come too to watch a fun filled cricket match where the emphasis is on enthusiastic sport, contagious energy, unwavering support and a fundamental spirit of competition and sportsmanship. The uplifting music plays, the vors sizzles, there is food a plenty, and sixty young people playing their hearts out, batting, bowling, fielding and absolutely loving the most perfect three days under the gentle winter sun. Cubs Coaches are the first to teach that courage isn't about hitting the biggest six, it's about walking back to the crease after getting out for a duck. Under Coach Try and the team, humility is drilled into the youngsters with every practice - win or lose, you shake hands, you thank the umpire, you pack the kit. Sportsmanship isn't just a speech they give, it is also celebrating the other team's good shot, owning a bad decision, and never letting talent turn into arrogance. Beyond batting techniques and bowling lines, they teach discipline, respect, and most importantly, how to show up for each other. Years later the kids might forget their batting average, but they'll never forget the lessons CUBS has given them about character. That's the mark of a brilliant leader and committed coaches - Zimbabwe's loss - Botswana's gain!! Tomorrow's Champions are in Safe Hands!! tktaruvinga@gmail.com ++++ 3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages Jane Rees passed away peacefully on 7th July 2026, in the UK following a courageous 20-year battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 90 years old. Born in the UK, Jane moved to Bulawayo in 1959, where she worked as a dietitian at UBH and later at Mater Dei. She married Stan Rees and together they raised their family in Bulawayo. Jane returned to the UK in 2000 following the death of her husband in 1994. Jane will be remembered for her charity work and Christian outreach and will be deeply missed by her children Mel, Greg, and Chris, as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. ++++ In Memory of Anthony John Chennells, born Rhodesian and Zimbabwe's literary guru de luxe. He was an avid conservationist who believed deeply that sustainable use of wildlife was essential to preserving the land and funding its protection. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly to show that hunting and conservation could exist in harmony, collaborating with fellow hunters, National Parks, and ecologists, always guided by strong ethics and a profound knowledge and respect for the bush and its wildlife. Peter was a mentor to many, encouraging and shaping generations within the industry. His influence lives on in those who follow in his footsteps-men and women who carry forward his knowledge, his values, and his commitment to responsible stewardship of the land. Beyond his professional legacy, Peter was a devoted husband and a proud father to three daughters who adored him. He gave his family his full attention, offering guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support, helping shape them into the strong women they are today. To his friends, he was a confidant, a storyteller, and a source of endless laughter. Known for his humor and quirky sayings, he had a way of bringing people together-often around a generous table, where stories flowed freely and every meal was met with his familiar grin and a playful, 'Is that all ' Respected by all who knew him, Peter leaves behind a loving family, dear friends, and a lasting legacy in both conservation and community. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. A celebration of his life will be held at Cawston at 10.00am on Sunday 19 July. THURSDAY 16 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. KINKY BOOTS Kinky Boots is a 2005 film based on true events and tells of struggling shoe factory owner Charlie Price who has reluctantly inherited his father's shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father's legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair find that they have more in common than they realized... and discover that when you change your mind, you can change your whole world. The film received mixed reviews from critics but soon developed a cult following and inspired the 2013 stage musical of the same name. Don't miss it. [BBC.com] Kinky Boots is hilarious and poignant enough to suspend scepticism and erase doubts. [The Observer] It's Chiwetel Ejiofor who takes the film from the realm of good into something verging on greatness. [Mountain Xpress A heart-warming and inspiring film to boot. [The Independent] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAY 23 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN In 1941, the peaceful island of Cephalonia is occupied by Italian and German forces. Captain Antonio Corelli (Nicolas Cage), an Italian officer who is more passionate about music and his mandolin than fighting, is stationed at the home of the village doctor, Dr.Iannis (John Hurt). Initially, Dr.Iannis' daughter, Pelagia (Penelope Cruz), resents the occupying forces, particularly because her fiercely patriotic fiance, Mandras (Christian Bale), is away fighting the Italians in Albania. However, as Mandras stops writing and months pass, Pelagia's defences weaken and she is increasingly charmed by Corelli's gentle nature and passion for music.. Although it's in the same genre as "The English Patient," it's a vastly better movie --more surprising and original, more rigorous and sympathetic. It is also heartbreaking and exhilarating. [Baltimore Sun] The able cast brings these emotionally complex characters to life, while making Shawn Slovo's occasionally lyrical dialogue sound perfectly natural. [TV Guide] A handsomely staged and craftily constructed tearjerker. [Philadelphia Inquirer] Grand passion, secrecy, world politics and mortal danger provide a heady mix for this spectacularly beautiful movie. [New York Daily News] Admission: $3.00 FRIDAY 24 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. DELIBES: COPPELIA (ROYAL BALLET) Coppelia, a mechanical doll made by the toy-maker Dr.Coppelius, is so lifelike that some believe she is his daughter and the mistake leads to intrigue and jealousy in love as Franz,, fiance of the young, villager Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppelia. The enchanting Royal Ballet production was by Dame Ninette de Valois with original designs by Sir Osbert Lancaster and this revival stars Leanne Benjamin, Carlos Acosta and Luke Heydon. Now we have this sparkling Ballet on DVD, beautifully filmed and with first class orchestral sound, richly played ..fabulously entertaining...Buoyant performances. [San Francisco Chronicle] Leanne Benjamin is an ideal Swanilda, always alert and fun loving, yet always intelligent. Musical Opinion] The Royal Ballet show that DVD benefits the art of the dance as well..Here we actually hear the delights of Delibes' ever-popular score. It's a feast for the eye too, with the magical story of the enchanted doll, and Osbert Lancaster's witty and colourful designs, benefiting from DVD's clarity. [Birmingham Evening Mail] Leanne Benjamin's Swanilda has much charm and Carlos Acosta, brings the appropriate ardour, grace and virtuosity to the role of Franz, while Luke Heydon's Dr.Coppelius is exemplary. There is first-class dancing from the Corps and lively, well-paced orchestral playing. [The Penguin Guide] This production and recording of Coppelia is absolutely incredible, the performance is spectacular, both the orchestra and the dancers! Iganyana Arts and Crafts was founded to identify, nurture, and train talented artisans from communities surrounding Hwange National Park. Since its inception, the project has created meaningful livelihood opportunities by equipping community members with practical artistic skills and access to local and international markets. Today, our artisans produce more than 70 unique handcrafted products, providing a reliable source of income for adults and young people while strengthening conservation awareness across the region. Our project is built on the belief that conservation and community development go hand in hand. By creating sustainable economic opportunities, we help reduce dependence on activities that threaten wildlife and natural ecosystems while encouraging communities to become active participants in conservation efforts. One of the defining features of Iganyana Arts is our commitment to environmental sustainability. Approximately half of the materials used in our products are recycled or repurposed. Everyday waste materials that would otherwise end up in landfills are transformed into beautiful and functional works of art, demonstrating the value of recycling while reducing environmental pollution. Among our most unique creations are wildlife sculptures made from wire snares recovered by Painted Dog Conservation's Anti-Poaching Units during patrols in and around protected wildlife areas. These snares, once intended to trap and kill wildlife, are creatively transformed into remarkable sculptures representing Zimbabwe's iconic animals. Each sculpture tells a powerful conservation story, raising awareness about the devastating impact of illegal poaching on wildlife, particularly the endangered African Painted Dog, while providing sustainable income for local artisans. To continue expanding this important initiative, we kindly appeal to Morning Mirror for support through donations of reusable materials that can be transformed into high-quality handcrafted products. We would greatly appreciate donations of the following items: Scrap electric wire cables Fabric scraps and off-cuts MSC jewellery beads Reusable craft materials Other recyclable materials suitable for artistic production These donated materials will enable our artisans to continue producing handcrafted items that generate sustainable livelihoods for families within our surrounding communities. They will also help us reduce waste through creative recycling and strengthen our conservation education programmes by showcasing how discarded materials can be given new purpose while supporting wildlife protection. Your support would make a meaningful difference by helping community members develop valuable artistic skills, increase household incomes, and participate in conservation-driven enterprises. Every donation, regardless of its size, contributes directly to empowering local artisans and reinforcing the important message that communities can thrive while protecting Zimbabwe's rich natural heritage. As a respected community publication, Morning Mirror has consistently played an important role in supporting local initiatives that create positive social impact. We believe that your support of Iganyana Arts and Crafts would not only strengthen our work but also inspire others within the community to contribute towards sustainable development and wildlife conservation. Should you require any further information about our project or wish to arrange a donation, we would be pleased to meet with you or provide additional details at your convenience. We sincerely appreciate your consideration of our request and hope that Morning Mirror will partner with us in empowering local artisans, promoting environmental sustainability, and protecting Zimbabwe's unique wildlife for future generations. Thank you for your time and generosity. We look forward to the opportunity of working together in making a lasting and meaningful impact. Her journey of turning personal adversity into a force for collective good embodies the very definition of emotional alchemy. This event aims at : -Celebrating the life, resilience, and humour of Barbara Kamba-Nyathi in a unique, uplifting setting. -Raising funds for Femme For Teal, with 100% of ticket sales going directly to cervical cancer awareness and support programmes. -Harnessing the power of comedy and community to destigmatise conversations around cancer survival and women's health. The evening will be structured as a classic roast, framed by live music and dance. The event will open with a musical performance to set a vibrant tone, followed by a line-up of speakers and comedians taking the stage to share prepared sets that lovingly mock, honour, and celebrate Barbs. The roast will close with a dance routine, sending the audience off on an energetic high.
