THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a gripping crime thriller following Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist recently convicted of libel against a corrupt billionaire. He is hired by elderly, wealthy Henrik Vanger to investigate the presumed murder of his 16-year-old grandniece, Harriet, who vanished from their secluded family island in 1966. Lisbeth Salander: An unorthodox, fiercely independent computer hacker with a photographic memory and a traumatic past. She is initially hired to research Blomkvist's background but later hacks into his case files, impressing him enough that he brings her on as a partner Together, Blomkvist and Salander comb through decades of Vanger family history, diaries, and photographs to discover a disturbing pattern of anti-Semitic and misogynistic murders dating back decades. This is the original Swedish version expanded with deleted scenes as a two-part mini-series and dubbed into English. - It's the rare film of this length that doesn't make you look at your watch once. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is such a film. [Washington Post - Powerful, graphic, funny and disturbing, an astounding piece of cinema. PONCHIELLI: LA GIOCONDA Recorded live at the Vienna State Opera, Placido Domingo and Eva Marton star in a sumptuous recording of Ponchielli's famed four-act melodrama, a story of tyranny and intrigue set in semi-historical and ever-romantic Venice which demands large resources including a full-scale ballet, the celebrated Dance of the Hours. The story - based on a long forgotten Victor Hugo drama - is an emotional roller coaster of high passion and self-sacrifice and Ponchielli's score might be sumptuous to the point of occasional over-ripeness but it contains some marvellous arias, and whenever La Gioconda herself is on stage, it's hard not become enthralled by the richness of her suffering as painted by Ponchielli's lush, explosive music. - Ponchielli's wonderful opera masterly done. Perfection. [Amazon] - The performances from the entire cast can't be faulted, the two leads Eva Marton and Placido Domingo are especially outstanding and Barnaba is wonderfully devilish in characterisation. [IMDb] - This is a lovely Gioconda. The ultra-conservative production isn't ashamed to take this opera for the blood-and-thunder melodrama it is. Eva Marton sounds fantastic and Domingo is at the top of his game here while Fischer manages to draw a beautifully warm sound from the Vienna strings and the sense of a great occasion is well captured. [MusicWeb International] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAY 16 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. KINKY BOOTS Kinky Boots is a 2005 film based on true events and tells of struggling shoe factory owner Charlie Price who has reluctantly inherited his father's shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father's legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair find that they have more in common than they realized... and discover that when you change your mind, you can change your whole world. The film received mixed reviews from critics but soon developed a cult following and inspired the 2013 stage musical of the same name. Don't miss it. [BBC.com] Kinky Boots is hilarious and poignant enough to suspend scepticism and erase doubts. [The Observer] It's Chiwetel Ejiofor who takes the film from the realm of good into something verging on greatness. [Mountain Xpress A heart-warming and inspiring film to boot. [The Independent] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAY 23 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN In 1941, the peaceful island of Cephalonia is occupied by Italian and German forces. Captain Antonio Corelli (Nicolas Cage), an Italian officer who is more passionate about music and his mandolin than fighting, is stationed at the home of the village doctor, Dr.Iannis (John Hurt). Initially, Dr.Iannis' daughter, Pelagia (Penelope Cruz), resents the occupying forces, particularly because her fiercely patriotic fiance, Mandras (Christian Bale), is away fighting the Italians in Albania. However, as Mandras stops writing and months pass, Pelagia's defences weaken and she is increasingly charmed by Corelli's gentle nature and passion for music.. Although it's in the same genre as "The English Patient," it's a vastly better movie --more surprising and original, more rigorous and sympathetic. It is also heartbreaking and exhilarating. [Baltimore Sun] The able cast brings these emotionally complex characters to life, while making Shawn Slovo's occasionally lyrical dialogue sound perfectly natural. [TV Guide] A handsomely staged and craftily constructed tearjerker. [Philadelphia Inquirer] Grand passion, secrecy, world politics and mortal danger provide a heady mix for this spectacularly beautiful movie. DELIBES: COPPELIA (ROYAL BALLET) Coppelia, a mechanical doll made by the toy-maker Dr.Coppelius, is so lifelike that some believe she is his daughter and the mistake leads to intrigue and jealousy in love as Franz,, fiance of the young, villager Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppelia. The enchanting Royal Ballet production was by Dame Ninette de Valois with original designs by Sir Osbert Lancaster and this revival stars Leanne Benjamin, Carlos Acosta and Luke Heydon. She has made it her life work to create space for this transformation for those searching for a better way to be, and Stringed Moments is a manifestation of that purpose. Through music, dance, storytelling, poetry, and folklore, Kwantuthu After Dark transports audiences into a world where elders were the libraries of society and children learned through song, play, and attentive listening. The musical features the vibrant traditional dance troupe Sekunjalo MaAfrica and the youthful and energetic Uhlaba Usamila Afro-Indigenous Youth Choir. The production is directed by GogBekezela, with choreography by Arnold of Sekunjalo MaAfrica, and is produced by Gobela Arts Development Agency in partnership with Travel Savvy. A special preview snippet of the show will premiere at the Alliance Francaise Bulawayo on 17 July 2026, giving audiences a glimpse into this powerful cultural storytelling. The Roast of Barbs. A Night of Laughter, Love, and Emotional Alchemy Wednesday 28th July - 5pm - 5 USD, wine offered This event is organized by Ble Mutandwa, an acclaimed comedian and master of ceremonies. A roast is a time-honoured tradition in which family, friends, and colleagues gather to affectionately and humorously celebrate an individual through playful teasing, heartfelt anecdotes, and joyful tributes. On 29 July 2026, we will bring this tradition to Bulawayo in honour of Barbara Kamba-Nyathi, widely known as Barbs the Emotional Alchemist. Barbs is a practising psychotherapist, a cervical cancer survivor, and a transformative community figure. Through her Bold Dialogue banner, she has created spaces for healing, expression, and connection-most notably through Inkspoken and Stringed Moments, events that have become cornerstones of Bulawayo's creative and wellness landscape. She is also the founder of Femme For Teal, an organisation dedicated to the fight against cervical cancer through awareness and support. Her journey of turning personal adversity into a force for collective good embodies the very definition of emotional alchemy. This roast serves not only as a celebration of her life and spirit but also as a platform to advance the critical work she champions. This event aims at : -Celebrating the life, resilience, and humour of Barbara Kamba-Nyathi in a unique, uplifting setting. -Raising funds for Femme For Teal, with 100% of ticket sales going directly to cervical cancer awareness and support programmes. -Harnessing the power of comedy and community to destigmatise conversations around cancer survival and women's health. He was buried on the 21st November 2014 after 8 months of trying to find next of kin.
