Silly Soccer Season

In our house the watching of Sport on the telly is mandatory. No sport in particular as long as it is sport. I have managed to cope for forty something years with rugby, cricket and Formula One, but just recently its either 'Sport' or 'World News' and there is no doubt that World News need to be avoided at all costs.
My girl friends are lucky, they are allowed to watch Soaps, Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice, The Clean It Fix it team, all sorts of programmes to delight the feminine heart, but in our home its just plain SPORT!!

The rugby roots go deep, I will admit, and I have learned to love that particular sport too.

From deep in the foothills of Kokstad came the sporting side of the family - right from the heartland of rugby, although it would appear they are ambivalent those Kokstadians, they can get equally as passionate about cricket, soccer, tennis, biking, motor racing and snowboarding, polo, as long as it is sport, it has a place in the heart...

I feel somewhat marginalised, quite often in fact - when the girl talk in the coffee shop veers towards popular TV shows, I am totally lost.

I can give you the Bafana Bafana v Iraq scores verbatim, I can give you Alcaraz's last 6 matches ball by ball. I can recite the four most capped Springbok players if you want ? Percy 102, Jooste 89 and John Smit 83 followed by hunky Matfield at 82 !!

Why do they make such a fuss out of the amount of caps a fellow has at any rate?

On the subject of 'Caps' I have had dozens of those hideous bathing caps firmly stuck to my scalp while having my hair highlighted !! Believe me it is so painful, I defy any Bok to have that done even once !! I did e mail Victor Matfield and offer him free highlights for his hair using the dreaded bathing cap, but he did not reply !!

But what I cannot tell you is who got knocked out in Strictly Come Dancing or who won 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'.
Its tough being the odd girl out, none of my female peers can recite the names of all the players in the Super 14 or the opening batsmen in the Cricket World 20/20 !!

However that rugby jargon is quite beyond me sometimes, I mean "tight head" is that a hangover ? Or maybe it is "tight end" There are quite a few cute "tightends" on the rugby field these days, so it's not all bad !!

But Hooker???
What on earth were they thinking ?? The blood bin ? Maul ? Sin Bin ?

I crave for a soapy or a quiz show, I would die for an episode of Idols. I got really excited when HeeHoo purchased one of those dual decoders. Hooray my time has come, he can sit and watch his sport and I can watch some programmes of my own ....... calloo callay oh frabjuous day !!

The soccer has been fun mind you, there are some really cute Spanish and Brazilian players I can secretly admire their "tightends" when HeeHoo is asleep.

Although they are not tough and manly like rugby players, they do tend to be a bit mamby pamby and are always lying down on the floor and crying quite a bit. If I was Ronaldo or Messi mind you, I would be crying too, imagine their income tax !!

But back to the dual decoder well, I was soon put in my place !!! Channel one is permanently on rugby and Channel two is on tennis/cricket/ football/motor racing/soccer !! And the remote is clutched firmly in his paw, even while asleep !!

I tried once to prise it from his hand when he nodded off, but it was as if rigor mortis had set in !!

Oh well, back to the telly, what is it tonight ? Motor racing maybe, Wimbledon definitely, a plethora of soccer certainly and a replay of Saturday's rugby highlights to be sure to be sure.

In an attempt to bring her out of a deep depression, her best friend, Patti (Sandra Oh), encourages Frances to take a tour of Italy. During the trip, the new divorcee impulsively decides to purchase a rural Tuscan villa and struggles to start her life anew amid colourful local characters, including the handsome Marcello.
- The epitome of what a feel-good movie is supposed to be but rarely is, this one is beautiful to look at and life-affirming to think about, and it doesn't have a pretentious bone in its head. [The Observer]
- An enjoyable, entertaining odyssey with beautiful landscapes, a fun mood, and a charming performance from the always sexy Diane Lane. [ Cinema Crazed]
- Has an emotional core of realism that is so precise and delicate and pinpoint accurate that it's overwhelming... [Flick Filosopher]
- This is a delightful for the target audience and the rest of you out there will like it too. [Greenwich Village Gazette]
- Sensual, luscious, vibrant filmmaking, and not a single frame of it is tepid or mundane. [Northwest Herald]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAYS 2 & 9 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a gripping crime thriller following Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist recently convicted of libel against a corrupt billionaire. He is hired by elderly, wealthy Henrik Vanger to investigate the presumed murder of his 16-year-old grandniece, Harriet, who vanished from their secluded family island in 1966. Lisbeth Salander: An unorthodox, fiercely independent computer hacker with a photographic memory and a traumatic past. She is initially hired to research Blomkvist's background but later hacks into his case files, impressing him enough that he brings her on as a partner Together, Blomkvist and Salander comb through decades of Vanger family history, diaries, and photographs to discover a disturbing pattern of anti-Semitic and misogynistic murders dating back decades.
This is the original Swedish version expanded with deleted scenes as a two-part mini-series and dubbed into English.
- It's the rare film of this length that doesn't make you look at your watch once. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is such a film. [Washington Post
- Powerful, graphic, funny and disturbing, an astounding piece of cinema. [The Sun]
- The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is rife with nightmarishly violent and horrific behaviour. It's intense, graphic, frightening. And, yes, exhilarating. [Philadelphia Inquirer]
- A sensational, spine-chilling thriller that will leave you clenching the arms on your theatre chair until your knuckles turn white. [Watertown Daily Times]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 10 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. PONCHIELLI: LA GIOCONDA
Recorded live at the Vienna State Opera, Placido Domingo and Eva Marton star in a sumptuous recording of Ponchielli's famed four-act melodrama, a story of tyranny and intrigue set in semi-historical and ever-romantic Venice which demands large resources including a full-scale ballet, the celebrated Dance of the Hours. The story - based on a long forgotten Victor Hugo drama - is an emotional roller coaster of high passion and self-sacrifice and Ponchielli's score might be sumptuous to the point of occasional over-ripeness but it contains some marvellous arias, and whenever La Gioconda herself is on stage, it's hard not become enthralled by the richness of her suffering as painted by Ponchielli's lush, explosive music.
- Ponchielli's wonderful opera masterly done. Perfection. [Amazon]
- The performances from the entire cast can't be faulted, the two leads Eva Marton and Placido Domingo are especially outstanding and Barnaba is wonderfully devilish in characterisation. [IMDb]
- This is a lovely Gioconda. The ultra-conservative production isn't ashamed to take this opera for the blood-and-thunder melodrama it is. Eva Marton sounds fantastic and Domingo is at the top of his game here while Fischer manages to draw a beautifully warm sound from the Vienna strings and the sense of a great occasion is well captured. [MusicWeb International]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAY 16 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. KINKY BOOTS
Kinky Boots is a 2005 film based on true events and tells of struggling shoe factory owner Charlie Price who has reluctantly inherited his father's shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father's legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair find that they have more in common than they realized... and discover that when you change your mind, you can change your whole world. The film received mixed reviews from critics but soon developed a cult following and inspired the 2013 stage musical of the same name.
Don't miss it. [BBC.com]
Kinky Boots is hilarious and poignant enough to suspend scepticism and erase doubts. [The Observer]
It's Chiwetel Ejiofor who takes the film from the realm of good into something verging on greatness. [Mountain Xpress
A heart-warming and inspiring film to boot. [The Independent]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAY 23 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN
In 1941, the peaceful island of Cephalonia is occupied by Italian and German forces. Captain Antonio Corelli (Nicolas Cage), an Italian officer who is more passionate about music and his mandolin than fighting, is stationed at the home of the village doctor, Dr.Iannis (John Hurt). Initially, Dr.Iannis' daughter, Pelagia (Penelope Cruz), resents the occupying forces, particularly because her fiercely patriotic fiance, Mandras (Christian Bale), is away fighting the Italians in Albania. However, as Mandras stops writing and months pass, Pelagia's defences weaken and she is increasingly charmed by Corelli's gentle nature and passion for music..
Although it's in the same genre as "The English Patient," it's a vastly better movie --more surprising and original, more rigorous and sympathetic. It is also heartbreaking and exhilarating. [Baltimore Sun]
The able cast brings these emotionally complex characters to life, while making Shawn Slovo's occasionally lyrical dialogue sound perfectly natural. [TV Guide]
A handsomely staged and craftily constructed tearjerker. [Philadelphia Inquirer]
Grand passion, secrecy, world politics and mortal danger provide a heady mix for this spectacularly beautiful movie. [New York Daily News]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 24 JULY AT 6.30 P.M. DELIBES: COPPELIA (ROYAL BALLET)
Coppelia, a mechanical doll made by the toy-maker Dr.Coppelius, is so lifelike that some believe she is his daughter and the mistake leads to intrigue and jealousy in love as Franz,, fiance of the young, villager Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppelia.
The enchanting Royal Ballet production was by Dame Ninette de Valois with original designs by Sir Osbert Lancaster and this revival stars Leanne Benjamin, Carlos Acosta and Luke Heydon.

Admission: $3.00

The Roast of Barbs.

A Night of Laughter, Love, and Emotional Alchemy

Wednesday 28th July - 5pm - 5 USD, wine offered

This event is organized by Ble Mutandwa, an acclaimed comedian and master of ceremonies.

A roast is a time-honoured tradition in which family, friends, and colleagues gather to affectionately and humorously celebrate an individual through playful teasing, heartfelt anecdotes, and joyful tributes. On 29 July 2026, we will bring this tradition to Bulawayo in honour of Barbara Kamba-Nyathi, widely known as Barbs the Emotional Alchemist.

Barbs is a practising psychotherapist, a cervical cancer survivor, and a transformative community figure. Through her Bold Dialogue banner, she has created spaces for healing, expression, and connection-most notably through Inkspoken and Stringed Moments, events that have become cornerstones of Bulawayo's creative and wellness landscape. She is also the founder of Femme For Teal, an organisation dedicated to the fight against cervical cancer through awareness and support. Her journey of turning personal adversity into a force for collective good embodies the very definition of emotional alchemy. This roast serves not only as a celebration of her life and spirit but also as a platform to advance the critical work she champions.

This event aims at :
-Celebrating the life, resilience, and humour of Barbara Kamba-Nyathi in a unique, uplifting setting.
-Raising funds for Femme For Teal, with 100% of ticket sales going directly to cervical cancer awareness and support programmes.
-Harnessing the power of comedy and community to destigmatise conversations around cancer survival and women's health.

The evening will be structured as a classic roast, framed by live music and dance. The event will open with a musical performance to set a vibrant tone, followed by a line-up of speakers and comedians taking the stage to share prepared sets that lovingly mock, honour, and celebrate Barbs. The roast will close with a dance routine, sending the audience off on an energetic high. Throughout, the tone will be warm, inclusive, and comedic, ensuring a safe space where laughter becomes a vehicle for genuine tribute. The event will also include a moment for Barbs to respond, inviting everyone into a shared moment of reflection and gratitude.

Performance:
Opening Music: Aufait
Closing Dance Routine: Tyno

Roasters:
Mbongeni Ignatius- Comedian
D'juni- Comedian
Guillaume Ripaud- Director, Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo

Cervical cancer awareness and education
Promoting early detection
Providing support networks for survivors and their families As asurvivor-led organisation, Femme For Teal brings authenticity and urgency to the fight against one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Zimbabwe. This roast transforms an evening of entertainment into meaningful, life saving impact.
