[Guardian] Admission: $3.00 the series THURSDAY 18 & FRIDAY 19 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. LAGAAN: ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA Lagaan was released twenty-five years ago on 15 June 2001 and it was 14th on the BBC's 'Top 50 films you must see before you die', the only Indian film on the list. Set in 1893, during the late Victorian period of British colonial rule in India, the film follows the inhabitants of a village in Central India, who, burdened by high taxes and several years of drought, are challenged by an arrogant British Indian Army officer to a game of cricket as a wager to avoid paying the taxes they owe. The villagers face the arduous task of learning a game that is alien to them and playing for a victory. The film runs for a few minutes short of four hours so will be shown over two evenings! A movie that amply delivers on the epic promise of its title, entertaining, enlightening, and emboldening viewers with its deceptively simple premise and execution. [Austin Chronicle] Lagaan is lavish, rousing entertainment in the old-fashioned tradition of Hollywood musicals. [Rotten Tomatoes] A must for all film-lovers. [Empire Magazine] The story about a sports duel in which something more than pride is involved is completely absorbing and its nearly four hours go like sand between the fingers. [Metacritic] Lagaan is an enormously entertaining movie, like nothing we've ever seen before, and yet completely familiar. It's a well-crafted, hugely entertaining epic with the spice of a foreign culture. [Chicago Sun-Times] Admission: $3.00 - covers both evenings! SUNDAY 21 JUNE AT 3.30 P.M. TICH MAKALISA: TIMELESS KEYS A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME ON THE PIANO Step into an afternoon of music without boundaries as pianist Tich Makalisa presents 'Timeless Keys: A Journey Through Time on the Piano'. Blending classical masterworks, jazz standards and contemporary favourites, the concert will take audiences on a rich musical journey from the elegance of Mozart and Beethoven to the soulful sounds of modern artists such as John Legend and Cyndi Lauper. The programme will feature beloved works including Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata, Mozart's Turkish March, jazz classics, and fresh interpretations of contemporary songs. A UCT BMus (hons) graduate, Tich Makalisa is a Zimbabwean pianist known for his versatile and expressive musical style that bridges classical, jazz and contemporary music. Over the years, he has performed on stages both locally and internationally, with appearances at renowned venues and festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival, as well as performances in London, Dubai and other international destinations. His performances are celebrated for their emotional depth, spontaneity and ability to connect with diverse audiences. Timeless Keys promises an engaging and memorable celebration of piano music across generations and genres. Admission: $5.00 THURSDAY 25 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN When Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) learns her husband is cheating on her from a writer whom she gave a bad review, her life is turned upside down. In an attempt to bring her out of a deep depression, her best friend, Patti (Sandra Oh), encourages Frances to take a tour of Italy. During the trip, the new divorcee impulsively decides to purchase a rural Tuscan villa and struggles to start her life anew amid colourful local characters, including the handsome Marcello. The epitome of what a feel-good movie is supposed to be but rarely is, this one is beautiful to look at and life-affirming to think about, and it doesn't have a pretentious bone in its head. [The Observer] An enjoyable, entertaining odyssey with beautiful landscapes, a fun mood, and a charming performance from the always sexy Diane Lane. [ Cinema Crazed] Has an emotional core of realism that is so precise and delicate and pinpoint accurate that it's overwhelming... [Flick Filosopher] This is a delightful for the target audience and the rest of you out there will like it too. [Greenwich Village Gazette] Sensual, luscious, vibrant filmmaking, and not a single frame of it is tepid or mundane.
