Morning Mirror Edition 1149 - 3/06/2026 www.morningmirror.africanherd.com Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home - the Edith Duly Nursing home ++++ 1) WATCH DOG ++++ 2) EDITORIAL COWBOYS AND INDIANS REMEMBERED. As children, for some reason, we played Cowboys and Indians. Probably most politically incorrect today, but I distinctly remember being in love with Kit Carson. Kit Carson was a frontiersman, his hair was long and blond and his horse's name was Apache. Then there was Roy Rogers whose horses name was Trigger!! Hopalong Cassidy was another favourite as was Daniel Boone with his Coonskin cap and then of course there was Buffalo Bill!! We knew a lot about the Red Indian Tribes too - Cheyenne, Sioux, Shoshane, and somehow Hiawatha and Minihaha were muddled up in between in my childhood memories. I can still recite Longfellow's poem to this day, virtually verbatim...' Today standing far, far away from our usual Hwange waterhole, we are overlooking the famous Grand Teton. The Grand Teton is the largest mountain in the Teton range and stands majestically overlooking the Grand Teton National Park. Grand Teton National Park is a national park of the United States in northwestern Wyoming. The park includes the major peaks of the 64 km long Teton Range as well as most of the northern sections of the valley known as Jackson Hole. Grand Teton National Park is 16 km south of Yellowstone National Park, and along with surrounding national forests, these three protected areas constitute the almost 22-million-acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Yellowstone National Park was the very first National Park in the whole world! The State is Wyoming, and as we travel we see names of towns that were strangely most familiar with in our Rhodesian childhood - names like Cheyenne, Caspar, and Laramie. They say one remembers more of one's childhood upon reaching one's dotage, but these memories of our days of playing Cowboys and Indians with our cousins Liz and Mike have become very vivid with each new reminder in the magnificent Yellowstone National Park!! ++++ 3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages Lorimer Scott Lorimer Scott passed has passed away after his long illness. Our Community mourns with his family and with Klyve Nyati. His departure will leave a large void in the Bulawayo community. ++++ Jean Whiley It is with great sorrow that we learnt of the sudden passing of our long and highly esteemed member of our Bulawayo Community. Among her many and various prestigious societies Jean was synonymous with the Matobo Conservation Society rarely missing a field trip, whilst her keen sense of humour could always be relied upon. No task was too much and always done with efficiency and professionalism. She also played a huge role in associated events such as the annual Matopos Heritage MTB Challenge. Deepest sympathy to Rob, Craig, Gordon and families. May she Rest in Peace. ++++ MAUREEN STIRLING It is with great sadness that I share the passing of my Mum, Maureen Stirling,in Johannesburg. Mum touched the lives of many people over the years, and I wanted to let those who knew her know of her passing. While this is a difficult time for our family, I take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace. Thank you for your thoughts and support. CHERNOBYL The Chernobyl disaster happened forty years ago in April 1986 so it seems an appropriate time to show the outstanding miniseries dramatizing the Soviet nuclear catastrophe when Reactor 4 exploded in what is now Ukraine. It follows scientist Valery Legasov, politician Boris Shcherbina and physicist Ulana Khomyuk as they investigate the causes, manage the devastating clean-up and expose the corruption and lies that caused the meltdown, but it also depicts some of the lesser-known stories including the efforts of the firefighters who were the first responders on the scene, volunteers, and teams of miners who dug a critical tunnel under Reactor 4. Chernobyl rivets with a creeping dread that never dissipates, dramatizing a national tragedy with sterling craft and an intelligent dissection of institutional rot. [Rotten Tomatoes] Created with an awesome attention to historical accuracy and detail, Chernobyl brought back that harrowing event with frightening clarity and a superbly orchestrated sense of danger and dread. [The Australian] A riveting showcase for sheer storytelling craft, Chernobyl is great TV, some of this year's best. [ScreenHub] Chernobyl is a disaster movie, a spy movie, a horror movie, a political thriller and a human drama, and it spins each plate expertly. [Guardian] Admission: $5.00 the series FRIDAY 5 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. MARIE-ANTOINETTE - BALLET Marie Antoinette is a ballet choreographed by Thierry Malandain for the Malandain Ballet Biarritz which was first performed on 29 March 2019 at the Opera Royal du Château de Versailles. Set to the music of Haydn and Gluck, it chronicles the key chapters of the queen's life, including her wedding day, the lavish parties of Versailles, the political intrigues, her attempted escape and her descent into melancholy and loneliness. The last Queen of France, with her exceptional, tragic, and glamorous destiny, deserved a ballet: Thierry Malandain has tailored a made-to-measure costume for her in a vibrant production. [RM Europa] Excellent ballet! I am very satisfied with this performance! [Amazon] Dive into the story of Marie Antoinette as you've never seen it in this picture-perfect ballet! The great Thierry Malandain's choreography depicts the ill-fated queen from her courtly debut all the way to her inglorious end at the Place de la Concorde.. [Medici TV] Dressed in sumptuous costumes, the dancers breathe life and dynamism into each role, their movements a perfect match with Haydn's symphonies and Gluck's Orphee et Eurydice. [Dance Tabs] Admission: $3.00 SATURDAY 6 JUNE AT 3.30 P.M. THE PHOENIX CHOIR: THE MAGIC OF STAGE AND SCREEN The Phoenix Choir returns with a programme of popular songs from stage and screen! Tickets $5.00 from Katherine on 0772 228 604 THURSDAY 18 & FRIDAY 19 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. LAGAAN: ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA Lagaan was released twenty-five years ago on 15 June 2001 and is one of the most highly regarded of all 'Bollywood' films with the highest budget for an Indian film of the time. Set in 1893, during the late Victorian period of British colonial rule in India, the film follows the inhabitants of a village in Central India, who, burdened by high taxes and several years of drought, are challenged by an arrogant British Indian Army officer to a game of cricket as a wager to avoid paying the taxes they owe. The villagers face the arduous task of learning a game that is alien to them and playing for a victory. The film runs for a few minutes short of four hours so will be shown over two evenings! A movie that amply delivers on the epic promise of its title, entertaining, enlightening and emboldening viewers with its deceptively simple premise and execution. [Austin Chronicle] Lagaan is lavish, rousing entertainment in the old-fashioned tradition of Hollywood musicals. [Rotten Tomatoes] The unlikeliest enthralling movie to be released this year. [Entertainment Weekly] The story about a sports duel in which something more than pride is involved is completely absorbing and its nearly four hours go like sand between the fingers. [Metacritic] Lagaan is an enormously entertaining movie, like nothing we've ever seen before, and yet completely familiar. It's a well-crafted, hugely entertaining epic with the spice of a foreign culture. [Chicago Sun-Times] Admission: $3.00 - for both evenings! SUNDAY 21 JUNE AT 3.30 P.M.
