THE CLOCK THAT BUILT A PARK

The Boggie Connection Between Gweru & Hwange
How one man's voice in parliament planted the seed for one of Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuaries - and why the clock that carries his memory has been silenced ever since.
You've walked past it. Its a symbol of the town, an iconic landmark. But do you actually know who Boggie was and what he did for this country

Stand at the intersection of Main Street and Robert Mugabe Way in Gweru, and you are standing in front of one of Zimbabwe's most consequential historical marker, the Boggies Memorial Clock. The tower was erected in 1937 by Jeannie, the widow of Major William James Boggie, in memory of her late husband the Major who was once the MP for the Midlands area in the Rhodesian parliament, best remembered for having put forward the original Bill of Legislation for the establishment of Hwange Game Reserve.

Here is the detail that history almost buried: Major Boggie did not live to see it done. He tabled the motion, he fought for it, and he died before the Bill was passed into law. It was his vision, not his signature, that created what stands today. Hwange National Park was established in 1928 the park that a Midlands MP had the foresight and courage to demand existed, even when no one else was listening.

The clock itself carries its own story. Imported from London, it was fitted with Westminster chimes until residents at the nearby Midlands Hotel complained that the clock, which loudly rang twelve times at midnight, was disturbing their peace. The expensive London-imported clock had its Westminster chimes silenced for good by the local authority. The voice of Gweru's most important monument, muted by a noise complaint.

And yet what that silenced clock set in motion is anything but quiet today. The Hwange-Sebungwe landscape is home to approximately 45,000 African elephants - the second-largest population on the continent. Beyond its borders, the park's significance has only grown. Hwange National Park is now a core component of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) the second-largest nature and landscape conservation area in the world, spanning the international borders of five countries: Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, and Angola. At 520,000 km, KAZA comprises 36 formally proclaimed national parks and three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Victoria Falls.

That is the scale of what one man's motion in a colonial parliament began. A reserve fought for by an MP from Gweru, now the Zimbabwean heartland of the largest transfrontier conservation area on earth.

The next time you pass Boggie's Clock, stop. Look up at that green tower, imported from London, its chimes permanently silenced. It is not just a city landmark. It is the quiet memorial of a conservationist before conservation had a name, a man who stood in parliament with a vision larger than his lifetime.
Hwange answered him back with 45,000 elephants.

Plan your visit to both. Come see the clock that started it all, then go witness the wilderness it created.

THURSDAY 21 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. A LATE QUARTET
With a weekend of outstanding concerts in view, it seemed appropriate to make the Thursday film one with a musical background!
As The Fugue, a string quartet, prepare to celebrate the milestone season together, cellist Peter (Christopher Waken) drops a bombshell on his comrades: he has Parkinson's disease and must soon retire. For the others, that announcement proves a catalyst for bringing their hidden resentments to the surface, while the married member's daughter has her own disruptive desire. Competing egos clash, long-simmering resentments bubble to the surface and marital infidelity and insuppressible lust rear their ugly heads.
A shining gem of a movie. [Rolling Stone]
A Late Quartet is visually and musically rich. But above all there are the performances, individually and as an ensemble, and they're pitch perfect. [The Guardian]
It may not sound like a scintillatingly good time at the movies, but actually it is. [Toronto Star]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 22 & SATURDAY 23 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. MORNINGSIDE MUSIC BRIDGE
Canadian-based Morningside Music Bridge is a ground-breaking programme, started in 1997 when Founder and Executive Director, Paul Dornian, then Director of Calgary's Mount Royal University Conservatory, met Andy Chan, who would become Board Chair of the Morningside Music Bridge Foundation. The pair visited China's Shanghai Conservatory together and invited two young musicians back to Canada for a summer of study and performance. The visit, and that summer programme, inspired the establishment of the Morningside Music Bridge, which, in its 30-year history, has brought together more than 1000 talented musicians from around the world and launched several careers.

As part of its 30th Anniversary Celebrations, Morningside Music Bridge is bringing a small group of faculty and alumni to Bulawayo to perform and teach. Paul Dornian said that 'For our 30th anniversary we wanted to do something really special, and when it was suggested, we do concerts in Zimbabwe, home of Morningside Bridge student, Emma Price, we thought what a great idea! It is our first performances in Africa, and we are so excited to work with these four exceptional young artists again, as well as with outstanding local professional musicians and music students from Zimbabwe.'

The visit will culminate in two concerts, Soundscapes: A Musical Collaboration. In addition to the performers from Morningside Music, the concert on Friday 22 May will feature several of Bulawayo's best musicians including Pardon Gwiriri, Tich Makalisa, Vusi Ndebele, Vuyi Sax, Mischek Ngorima and Akin Chariga as well as the Whitestone Choir with Christiane Price and the Girls' College Choir with Jeanette Delport. The programme will range from Ghana Blues, Bonse Abba, Something Just Like This, Fly away, Tula Tula and Rhythms of Africa to music by Gershwin, Handel, Hugh Masekela and Rossini!

The programme on 23 May will feature the Morningside performers as a quartet and in various solo settings and will include the world premiere of a new work by Vusi Ndebele. The group comprises Emma Price (cello, Zimbabwe), Amaryn Olmeda (violin, USA), Emad Zalfagheri (viola, Canada) and Mohammad Alsheik (piano, Palestine) and the programme will include:
Handel/Halverson: Passacaglia in G minor
Scarlatti: Sonata in A major, K.24
Vaughan William: Fantasia on 'Greensleeves'
Paganini: La Campanella
Chopin: Etude Op. 25, No.7 in C sharp minor
Faure: Papillon ("Butterfly"), Op. 77
Carlos Simon: Between Worlds
Milhaud: Scaramouche
Vusi Ndebele: Piano Quartet
Schumann: Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47
Admission each evening: $5.00. All proceeds will go to support music education in Bulawayo.

THURSDAYS 28 MAY, 4 & 11 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. CHERNOBYL
The Chernobyl disaster happened forty years ago in April 1986 so it seems an appropriate time to show the outstanding miniseries dramatizing the Soviet nuclear catastrophe when Reactor 4 exploded in what is now Ukraine. It follows scientist Valery Legasov, politician Boris Shcherbina and physicist Ulana Khomyuk as they investigate the causes, manage the devastating clean-up and expose the corruption and lies that caused the meltdown, but it also depicts some of the lesser-known stories including the efforts of the firefighters who were the first responders on the scene, volunteers, and teams of miners who dug a critical tunnel under Reactor 4.
Chernobyl rivets with a creeping dread that never dissipates, dramatizing a national tragedy with sterling craft and an intelligent dissection of institutional rot. [Rotten Tomatoes]
Created with an awesome attention to historical accuracy and detail, Chernobyl brought back that harrowing event with frightening clarity and a superbly orchestrated sense of danger and dread. [The Australian]
A riveting showcase for sheer storytelling craft, Chernobyl is great TV, some of this year's best. [ScreenHub]
Chernobyl is a disaster movie, a spy movie, a horror movie, a political thriller and a human drama, and it spins each plate expertly. [Guardian]
Admission: $3.00 / $5.00 the series
