The New BULAWAYO CBD

Our Suburb called 'Suburbs' in Bulawayo is taking on a brand new elegant image. Formerly renowned for its glorious shady Jacaranda Trees, wide garden verges, and quaint colonial homes with wide verandas, it is now becoming the home of Bankers, Accounting Firms, Legal Establishments, Opticians, Estate Agents, Doctors Rooms, Beauty Salons and more importantly restaurants.

Great modern homes and offices are rising like Phoenix from the ashes of tiny little homes built after the Second World War. The stands are vast in Suburbs, and it is becoming a mecca for gated communities and town houses.

I was born in Lawley Road, spent my teens in Livingstone Road, and now live in Pauling Rd, having moved just three blocks in my whole life! I am so old that I remember when every block has a 'sanitary lane' dividing the houses, where the Municipal Trash Carts would drive through and collect the tin garbage cans!

Restaurants abound in Suburbs, we have the Mozambik right behind us, the aroma of garlic and prawns makes HeeHoo's mouth water daily. HeeHoo even dreams of building a gate from our house to the restaurant one day! We have the Shangrila at the end of our block, both within easy walking distance. Then we have the Bowery just one block away, Zen Cafe is further away but still in Suburbs, Amore is a couple of blocks down towards town with the Garden Bistro just one block further.

Thank goodness we have Karls Gymnasium 'Bodysculpt' at McDonald Club to keep the weight off after all this eating.!!

A very new addition to our cosmopolitan suburb is the quaint little village square comprising two giant and very busy padel courts, complete with a small pool and a delightful playground, 2 championship squash courts, a lovely little restaurant run by Jackie and a soon to be garden nursery.

We have a cricket club and a lawn bowls club on the northern boundary, a hockey stadium on the eastern boundary, two sports clubs in the west, another sports club on the southern border plus we have our magnificent museum within walking distance and our soon to be magnificent Centenary Park close by.

We are indeed a sought after little addition to the Bulawayo CBD!!

3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages

Hannah Mouat

Our love and prayers go out to David on the tragic passing of little Hannah.

Sippy Halsted
Phillipa (Sippy) Halsted beloved wife of the late Eugene Halsted, daughter of the late Benjy and Micky Williams. Sippy and Eugene had four children - Garda, Craig, Andrew , and Kate. So sadly missed by all. Her passing will sincerely affect our Bulawayo Community.

Jillian Wild. 23/05/24
The day you left us , the bird song became softer.
The wind calmed and treasured memories formed a carpet of autumn leaves.
You were embedded in so many of our lives
Through music , song and love.
Just as each passing day cannot be replaced
So your radiant presence will remain ever lost
In a world searching for joy and peace.
Your piano's at home and at the Academy
Remind us of a precious time gone by.

Always missed : Allan

Paul G. Beckett passed on in 2022 in Wolverhampton, UK, during the time of Covid. The details thereof were very slow in being released. Paul grew up at the top of Rhodesia near the Zambezi River. He worked in Zimbabwe and Zambia. He was a kind, well-spoken and humourous man.

THURSDAY 14 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. HER MAJESTY MRS.BROWN
After the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) withdraws from public life, so the court appoints a former servant of the prince, John Brown (Billy Connolly), to help her recover from her grief. Brown's unorthodox ways and disdain for protocol draw the queen out of her shell, and the brash Scot becomes her sole confidant. However, their growing closeness causes a stir as scandalous rumours begin circulating about the exact nature of their relationship.
- A rich character study that features exceptional acting and superb cinematography. It's one of the year's best films. [Tri-City Herald]
- Judi Dench and Billy Connolly are a wonderfully regal double act in this perceptive blend of fact and fiction. [Radio Times]
- Terrific performances make it a must-see. [Shadows on the Wall]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAY 21 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. A LATE QUARTET
For 25 years, the Fugue, a string quartet, has wowed music-lovers with its skilled performances. However, as the musicians prepare to celebrate the milestone season together, cellist Peter (Christopher Walken) drops a bombshell on his comrades: he has Parkinson's disease and must soon retire. In the fallout from the shocking announcement, competing egos clash, long-simmering resentments bubble to the surface, and marital infidelity rears its ugly head.
A shining gem of a movie. [Rolling Stone]
A Late Quartet is visually and musically rich. But above all there are the performances, individually and as an ensemble, and they're pitch perfect. [London Evening Standard]
It may not sound like a scintillatingly good time at the movies, but actually it is. [Toronto Star]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 22 & SATURDAY 23 MAY AT 6.30 P.M.
MORNINGSIDE MUSIC BRIDGE
Canadian-based Morningside Music Bridge is a ground-breaking programme, started in 1997 when Founder and Executive Director, Paul Dornian, then Director of Calgary's Mount Royal University Conservatory, met Andy Chan, who would become Board Chair of the Morningside Music Bridge Foundation. The pair visited China's Shanghai Conservatory together and invited two young musicians back to Canada for a summer of study and performance. The visit, and that summer programme, inspired the establishment of the Morningside Music Bridge, which, in its 30-year history, has brought together more than 1000 talented musicians from around the world and launched several careers.

As part of its 30th Anniversary Celebrations, Morningside Music Bridge is bringing a small group of faculty and alumni to Bulawayo to perform and teach. Paul Dornian said that 'For our 30th anniversary we wanted to do something really special, and when it was suggested, we do concerts in Zimbabwe, home of Morningside Bridge student, Emma Price, we thought what a great idea! It is our first performances in Africa, and we are so excited to work with these four exceptional young artists again, as well as with outstanding local professional musicians and music students from Zimbabwe.'

The visit will culminate in two concerts, Soundscapes: A Musical Collaboration. In addition to the performers from Morningside Music, the concert on Friday 22 May will feature several of Bulawayo's best musicians including Pardon Gwiriri, Tich Makalisa, Vusi Ndebele, Vuyi Sax, Mischek Ngorima and Akin Chariga as well as the Whitestone Choir with Christiane Price and the Girls' College Choir with Jeanette Delport. The programme will range from Ghana Blues, Bonse Abba, Something Just Like This, Fly away, Tula Tula and Rhythms of Africa to music by Gershwin, Handel, Hugh Masekela and Rossini!

The programme on 23 May will feature the Morningside performers as a quartet and in various solo settings and will include the world premiere of a new work by Vusi Ndebele. The group comprises Emma Price (cello, Zimbabwe), Amaryn Olmeda (violin, USA), Emad Zalfagheri (viola, Canada) and Mohammad Alsheik (piano, Palestine) and the programme will include:

Handel/Halverson: Passacaglia in G minor
Scarlatti: Sonata in A major, K.24
Vaughan William: Fantasia on 'Greensleeves'
Paganini: La Campanella
Chopin: Etude Op. 25, No.7 in C sharp minor
Faure: Papillon ("Butterfly"), Op. 77
Carlos Simon: Between Worlds
Milhaud: Scaramouche
Vusi Ndebele: Piano Quartet
Schumann: Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47

Admission each evening: $5.00. All proceeds will go to support music education in Bulawayo.

Thursday 21st May - 5pm - free entrance, wine offered

The Stringed Moments project is inspired by the lived experiences of Barbs, which range from surviving cervical cancer, endometriosis, a hysterectomy, a divorce, abuse, cardiac arrests and even living with an autoimmune disease. Each challenge came with its own set of lessons, but she's continually seen the power that comes with redefining and rebuilding your identity on your own terms. She has made it her life work to create space for this transformation for those searching for a better way to be, and Stringed Moments is a manifestation of that purpose.
