CRAZY SEASON

I stand corrected but I feel this African rainy season has been kinda different. The Okavango talk is that they have not had as much water in the Delta, this early, for 16 years.

Floods in Gwanda Perhaps a Gwanda resident can tell us when were the last floods. HeeHoo remembers Tods Motel flooding way back in the seventies, but Tods was about 70 km from Gwanda.

Then there is the Shanghai River which overflowed the high level bridge between Bulawayo and Gweru Highway halting traffic for several hours.

How well I remember stopping on the side of a washed away bridge between Gweru and Bulawayo, but that was way back 'before the Rinderpest' as they say. My brother Gavin was small and ill with Measles, which in those days, was nothing to be sniffed at. My Mom was visiting her Mom in Gweru and the trip home was delayed for many hours, as countless cars on both sides of the very same river, were kept waiting until the river subsided. In those days nothing that a flask of tea and a peanut butter sandwich could not fix!! It was the low level bridge then, and the high level bridge, built many years later, is facing the same fate it would appear. And I quote an official 'this is the first time the Shanghai River Bridge has ever flooded'

Several dramatic rescues have been reported in recent weeks. in various parts of the country. In Zvishavane District, 16 gold panners were marooned in the Muchingwe River on 15 March but were rescued safely. In Chiredzi District, four men were saved on 13 March after attempting to cross the swollen Runde River.
Tragedy struck in Muzarabani on 9 March when twin siblings, pupils at Utete Primary School, drowned while trying to cross a flooded stream on their way home.
On 16 March, two men were swept away by the Munyati River in Gokwe while attempting to cross in a makeshift boat; one was rescued while the other remains missing.

One of the most viral graphs on social media in Zimbabwe right now, is the Lake Levels graph, which includes most of the lakes and supply dams in the country.

Many dams and lakes are spilling. As of 18 March our 152 supply dams stand at 92.6% full, ZINWA has a comprehensive website with very encouraging content.

Stay dry and stay safe!!

THURSDAY 26 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123
In this 2009 remake of the classic thriller Chaos reigns in the New York City subway system when heavily armed criminals, led by a mastermind named Ryder (John Travolta), hijack the subway train Pelham 123, stopping the first car with nineteen hostages in a higher plane in the tunnel in Manhattan and threaten to kill everyone on board unless a ransom of ten million dollar is paid within an hour. With the tension in the tunnels rising, train dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) uses his extensive knowledge of the transit system in a bid to outwit the hijackers and save the hostages before the shootings start..
Head-bangingly hyperactive as ever, action maestro Tony Scott appears to have upped his caffeine intake for this unexpectedly entertaining remake. [Guardian]
A rollicking tale that unspools in urgent real time... and is jam-packed with literally breathtaking action. [Flick Filosopher]
Like the subway itself, things move by connections, craziness and clockwork in The Taking of Pelham 123, a fast and relentless hostage thriller that never stops. [ New York Daily News]
Tony Scott has made a film that, for sheer fun and breathless tension, leaves the summer's other actioners parked in the sidings. [Daily Mirror ]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 27 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. CADILLAC RECORDS
Based on the true story, Cadillac Records tells how a small music recording studio, Chess Records, located on the south side of Chicago, began recording blues music with Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright) and Little Walter (Columbus Short) in 1947, and eventually gave birth to rock and roll in 1955 with Chuck Berry (Mos Def). Record producer, Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody) has an ear for this different type of music, and believes he can cash in by signing up new talent such as songwriter, Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer), Howlin' Wolf (Eamonn Walker), and Etta James (Beyonce). Leonard Chess makes all of his artists part of his family and takes care of them, not an easy job for him as they spend a small fortune on booze, drugs and the high life.
It's an enthralling story and the outstanding ensemble cast - together with a primal, heart-thumping blues soundtrack - make it a blast from start to finish. [Roll Credits]
The music is good, the suits are sharp, but it's the outstanding performances that wow. Walker is electrifying as Howlin' Wolf and Beyonce - playing Etta James - has never been so sultry and sexy. [The Times]
Cadillac Records is a rollicking and insightful celebration of Chicago blues in its hectic golden age. [New York Times]
This terrifically tuneful movie offers a fascinating taste of musical history, with Beyonce just fine as Etta James. [Daily Mirror]
Admission: $3.00

SATURDAY 28 MARCH AT 10.00 A.M. ACADEMY STUDENT CONCERT.
