Morning Mirror Edition 1137 - 12/02/2026 www.morningmirror.africanherd.com Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home - the Edith Duly Nursing home ++++ 1) WATCH DOG Garden Park Retirement Complex have a few single rooms available for full board and lodging. For enquiries please phone the Administration Office on 2254049 or 2234687 or visit us at No 3 St. Lukes Way, Woodlands. ++++ 2) EDITORIAL Unaccustomed as I am to swearing! Unaccustomed as I am to swearing, I have been doing my fair share recently with the horrendous driving in Bulawayo. It's really the fault of one's adrenaline and cortisol, and it's purely reflex and fear that makes one use these offensive words!! However I try particularly hard to get these hormones under control whilst driving my grandchildren, but, as my grandson reminds me frequently, I believe I let one slip recently. He of course had to advise his Mom ! 'Nana said the 'F' word today Mom!! We as Zimbabweans have lot of decisions to make whilst driving ! Decisions like 'Should I risk the pothole or mount the kerb ', Do I dare drive while the traffic light is broken I am confused - are we supposed to 'Give way to the right' or use the 'first come first serve' civilised rationale The safest bet is to wait until a ten-tonner hurtles up beside you, and then drive using him as a shield!! Courtesy is an unknown word in Zimbabwe, mind you, I suppose put one's flashers on and increasing one's speed could possibly be considered the modern form of courtesy The populace has now taken things into its own hands, if the government will not increase the size of the roads, we will make our own roads! A two lane arterial road is miraculously converted to a five lane highway. Then of course we have discovered that the majority of Zimbabwean are colour blind. Red light Orange Light Green Light What the heck it's my turn to go...... ++++ 3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages JOHN BREBNER To Bridget, Caro, Jenny, and the entire family-please accept our deepest condolences. We share your sorrow and hold you close in our thoughts. John's absence leaves a void that words can scarcely fill, but the example he set-of loyalty, diligence, kindness, and reverence for the natural world-will endure. John lived a life of quiet excellence. He asked for little, gave abundantly, and left everything better than he found it-whether in the workplace, in the wild, or in the hearts of those who knew him. We are truly devastated by his passing but also appreciate that the last 10 months have been agonising for you all having to watch him suffer so much. Love from Rick, Mags, Joanne, Robyn and our entire families. ++++ Ian Hodgson Ian 'Hot Dog' Hodgson. RIP, Hots, larger than life and a true gentleman and friend. Fly high old mate. Gary Crocker ++++ Gavern Manfrid Waldeck, We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Gavern Manfrid Waldeck, beloved husband, dad, grandfather, brother, and uncle. A devoted husband to Joan, loving dad to Stacey, Matthew and Butch, and a cherished grandfather to Shaun and Sarah. Gavern, a true gentleman, touched many peoples lives and we recall so many happy memories celebrating life. While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing he is now at rest with God and no longer suffering, after a long and brave battle with cancer. ++++ Helen McBean Heaven has gained another special angel. After so many years of fighting the battle, dear Helen McBean has left us. Deepest sympathy to Mrs Whiteley, Jan, Irene, Craig, Ryan, and families. ++++ Paul Connelly A tribute to the Shearwater founder - Paul Connolly. (1953 - 2026) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Connolly (72). He died on 1st Feb 2026 from a suspected heart attack while exiting the gorge following a kayaking trip with close friends. Paul pioneered canoeing on the lower Zambezi in 1982, founded Shearwater in 1985 and pioneered whitewater rafting on the Zimbabwe side of the Zambezi that same year. Paul was a renowned explorer and adventure partaking in great river adventures throughout Africa, sometimes with friends and sometimes solo. But to those who knew him he was much more than that. A warrior, author, poet, scholar, philosopher, conservationist, sportsman, raconteur, lawyer, friend, mentor and loving family man to Marie and his 4 daughters (Dani, Claire, Julie, Nikki) and grandchildren. He 'died with his boots on' as he would have wished, but he will be missed by all who knew him. Paul Connolly - founder of Shearwater - We salute you! Rest in Peace. ++++ 4) NOTICES ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 WhatsApp: 0782 946 086 E-mail: zam@gatorzw.co.uk THURSDAY 12 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. ROBIN AND MARIAN Long after their original adventures in Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood (Sean Connery) and his trusty sidekick, Little John (Nicol Williamson), fight alongside Richard the Lion-Heart (Richard Harris) in France. After Richard dies in battle, the pair revisit Sherwood, where Robin learns that his beloved Maid Marian (Audrey Hepburn) serves as mother superior at a nearby convent. When the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw) orders her arrest by royal edict, Robin faces his old nemesis one last time. - James Goldman's script is razor-sharp, treating all characters, major and minor, with intelligence and compassion. The movie is shot in subdued hues, making the film more of a motion painting than picture. It is quite simply a film that must be seen - and once seen, treasured. [Los Angeles Times] - A beautiful little movie, grossly underrated. Good chemistry between legendary stars with a realistic look and mature sensibilities, instead of the normal Hollywood gloss. Also liked the surprisingly emotional climax. [Metacritic] - There are quite a few typical Lester gags on the fringes of its tale, but the movie is conceived and executed in an elegiac key, and played with an unfashionable depth of feeling, especially by Connery and Hepburn, both terrific. [Time Out ] - This film is Robin Hood for grown-ups, it's poignant, funny, sad and thought-provoking. It's an elegy more than a film. It's about getting old, being more experienced, and death, but don't let that put you off. 5.0 out of 5 stars [Amazon] Admission: $3.00 FRIDAY 13 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. MAYA PLISETSKAYA Maya Plisetskaya, who was born just over a hundred years ago on 20 November 1925, was one of the most outstanding dancers of the second half of the 20th century. Immediately after graduation from the Moscow Choreography School she became well-known, creating her own style which is characterized by a brilliant technique, elegance, perfection of each individual gesture and pose, always in combination with her beautiful dramatic art and extraordinary musicality. The main work in the programme is Carmen Suite, specially written for Plisetskaya with music arranged from Bizet by her husband, Rodion Shchedrin, and also included are the Rose Adagio from Sleeping Beauty, more Tchaikovsky in Romantic Encounter, Roland Petit's La Rose Malade and Bejart's tribute Ave Maya to the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria, danced by Plisetskaya when she was 75! - Oh my, if you love ballet, this is perfection. [The Classic Review] - FABULOUS!!!! Nothing more need be said. [Amazon] - This excellent video captures performances from the latter period of Plisetskaya's career, 1976-80, with a more simplified example from 2000. Alonso's fascinating choreography [for Carmen-Suite] employs Maya's eye-popping full hip rotations in the pas de deux, and in most of her solo sequences, she is an earthy, confident, sexual woman but not wanton. Her Carmen struts and challenges, occasionally breaking into classical moves yet always returning to modern dance formations. [Fanfare] Admission: $3.00 THURSDAYS 19 & 26 FEBRUARY, 5 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. THE NIGHT MANAGER The Night Manager has been in the news recently as a second series has just been screened ten years after the hugely successful first. That was a visually stunning spy thriller based on a 1993 novel by John le Carre, a lush six-part serial that oozes pure class in every scene. Tom Hiddleston is Jonathan Pine, an ex-soldier and now night manager of a luxury hotel in Cairo. He's recruited by British intelligence agent (Olivia Colman) to infiltrate the inner circle of 'the worst man in the world', arms dealer Dicky Roper - played with glee by a career best Hugh Laurie. Things, as you'd hope, do not go strictly to plan.. Elizabeth Debicki, Tom Hollander and Alistair Petrie provide support for this thriller that looks every penny of its not insignificant pound30 million budget. - From the first few minutes, Director Susanne Bier and Writers Le Carre and David Farr draw the audience in and keeps us captivated with an enthralling tale. [Flick Direct] - Brilliant on every level: casting, acting, directing, production values, score, and above all, writing. I'd loved the John le Carre novel and never thought a TV series could do it justice. I was so wrong: The series is even better. [Metacritic] - Such fear, such dread, and such a dazzling script. [Daily Mail] - There's no denying the excitement of the end product, which pulls viewers along on a strong current of suspense and glamour and gives us two lead performances worth savouring. [San Francisco Chronicle] Admission: $3.00 FRIDAY 27 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. THE GONDOLIERS The Gondoliers, the twelfth of fourteen operas from Gilbert & Sullivan, has been an audience favourite since its 1889 premiere. The tunes are infectious, the romantic and family conflicts heartfelt, and the satire of rank and station constantly entertaining and relevant. This Scottish Opera co-production with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company is created by some of the world's foremost G&S enthusiasts and experts. - The overarching feeling of Scottish Opera's The Gondoliers is joyful exuberance, a splendidly staged, marvellously sung and genuinely funny evening of Gilbert & Sullivan. [Opera Scene] - This Gondoliers is fresh, affectionate and intensely musical proof that these masterly comic operas can still hit their mark, even without reinvention. [Gramophone] - Scottish Opera has rounded up top Gilbert and Sullivan experts and enthusiasts to create a truly sumptuous production of The Gondoliers. Packed with cracking tunes, dances and a generous helping of sunny tra-la-las, it is a perfect choice to entice the public to the opera house. [Bachtrack] - Of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, The Gondoliers is arguably the most exuberant, the most musically inventive, and even the most topically satirical... Scottish Opera's staging of G&S's caper bursts with energy and boasts a cracking chorus and choreography. Launching on Friday 13th February - 5pm free entrance - wine and fingerfodd offered Artist biography : PARDINGTON DUBE Pardington Dube is a Contemporary Visual Artist and Graphic Designer from Zimbabwe, whose work explores emotion, and the human experience through abstract and figurative expression. A self-taught fine artist, Pardington's journey began with a passion for storytelling through bold, symbolic visual language. His signature style often features faceless figures, encouraging viewers to focus on emotion, body language, and environment, provoking reflection and connection. Artist Statement: "My work often explores themes of introspection, silent strength, and the unspoken narratives that shape our inner worlds. Through abstract and figurative forms, I blend raw textures, bold colour contrasts, and symbolic elements to provoke emotion and thought. I intentionally obscure facial features in many of my works to direct attention to posture, movement, and emotion, inviting the viewer to reflect inwardly. My greatest inspiration comes from personal challenges and the desire to tell stories that inspire healing and transformation. Every brushstroke is an echo of my lived experience and other people's experience. Every piece is an invitation to connect, feel, and reflect. Unveiled Silence is a personal journey of discovering my voice as an artist. Through faceless portraits, I'm honoring the untold stories, the pain, the healing, and the hope. This body of work is a reflection of unheard voices, moments of silence that carry the loudest emotions". "Personal Branding workshop" with Lesta.
