2) Editorial

It's in The Genes

Once a Zimbo always a Zimbo. We have bought the delicious yellow sweetcorn in the shops many time for HeeHoo, but he still insists that the good old White Mealie is the best. And so the hunt begins for the young fresh tender mealies that HeeHoo must have, always at this time of the year, one cannot escape the great annual mealie saga.

It's in the genes! Since time immemorial in October and November the great mealie lust begins. Zimbos will somehow find themselves a patch of free ground on which to plant their mealies. A sunny patch in the garden, a vacant plot, along the Matsheumhlope River, bordering golf courses, green spaces, anywhere at all.
There's a secret farmer in each and every one of us, the small plot is cleared, tilled and ridged, precious maize seed is hand planted and hopefully watered by Mother Nature. The tiny space is weeded, cosseted and spoken to, and lo and behold, after a few months (But only during good rain years,) glorious maize abounds.

At one stage the City Council would sanctimoniously destroy the illegal mealie fields but sanity prevailed eventually, the populace is hungry, and the populace, year after year, still tills, plants and grows!

We have grown accustomed to bad rains, and it has been heartbreaking to see year after year, field after field of dry, stunted crops, wilting and unable to tassel. But this year has been special, every spare nook and cranny in the suburbs boasts beautiful mealies, with magnificent tassels, and all are 'as high as an elephants eye'!

Now although HeeHoo likes young mealies smothered in butter and salt, he still has a secret craving for the traditional method of cooking our staple food.

We stopped off at a roadside 'store' run by a charming gentleman by the name of Praise. He has a small brazier on the side of the road, fashioned from a drum with holes in it and a grill on the top. Roasting away gently, with much tender turning by Praise, were his mealies cooked the traditional way. Almost every street in Zimbabwe at this time of the year - 'Green Mealie Season' has a makeshift kitchen serving this delicate fare.
Our Green Mealie Season rivals famous rituals like the Green Asparagus season in France, The Chestnut Season in Germany, and the Beaujolais Season in the Alsace!!
They were not nice soft ,mealies, but mature firm ones, flame grilled to perfection, lightly salted and served mouth wateringly on the green husks in which they were grown!

We had a grand old time, conversing with the hungry passers by, juice dripping down chins, with friendly banter and camaraderie, as only Zimbos know how.

3) Condolences, Births, Deaths and Marriages

Ian Hodgson

Ian 'Hot Dog' Hodgson.
RIP, Hots, larger than life and a true gentleman and friend.
Fly high old mate.

Gary Crocker

Gavern Manfrid Waldeck,

We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Gavern Manfrid Waldeck, beloved husband, dad, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

A devoted husband to Joan, loving dad to Stacey, Matthew and Butch, and a cherished grandfather to Shaun and Sarah.

Gavern, a true gentleman, touched many peoples lives and we recall so many happy memories celebrating life.

While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing he is now at rest with God and no longer suffering, after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Helen McBean

Heaven has gained another special angel. After so many years of fighting the battle, dear Helen McBean has left us. Deepest sympathy to Mrs Whiteley, Jan, Irene, Craig, Ryan, and families.

Paul Connelly
A tribute to the Shearwater founder - Paul Connolly. (1953 - 2026)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Connolly (72).
He died on 1st Feb 2026 from a suspected heart attack while exiting the gorge following a kayaking trip with close friends. Paul pioneered canoeing on the lower Zambezi in 1982, founded Shearwater in 1985 and pioneered whitewater rafting on the Zimbabwe side of the Zambezi that same year. Paul was a renowned explorer and adventure partaking in great river adventures throughout Africa, sometimes with friends and sometimes solo.
But to those who knew him he was much more than that.
A warrior, author, poet, scholar, philosopher, conservationist, sportsman, raconteur, lawyer, friend, mentor and loving family man to Marie and his 4 daughters (Dani, Claire, Julie, Nikki) and grandchildren.
He 'died with his boots on' as he would have wished, but he will be missed by all who knew him.
Paul Connolly - founder of Shearwater - We salute you! Rest in Peace.

THURSDAY 5 & FRIDAY 6 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
Running for almost four hours, Lawrence of Arabia will be shown over two evenings. It is perhaps too well known to require much in the way of introduction! Made over sixty years ago it is still widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Directed by David Lean, it was nominated for ten Oscars, winning seven, including Best Picture and Best Director. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture..
Lawrence is sent to Arabia to find Prince Faisal (Alec Guinness) and serve as a liaison between the Arabs and the British in their fight against the Turks. With the aid of Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif), Lawrence rebels against the orders of his superior officer and strikes out on a daring camel journey across the harsh desert to attack Aqaba and Damascus. Its themes include Lawrence's emotional struggles with the violence inherent in war, his identity, and his divided allegiance between Britain and his new-found comrades within the Arabian desert tribes.
- The epic of all epics Lawrence of Arabia cements director David Lean's status in the filmmaking pantheon with nearly four hours of grand scope, brilliant performances, and beautiful cinematography. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- The second half isn't quite as compelling as the first, but the first half is pure perfection, and then it devolves into one of the best movies ever made. [Film Frenzy]
- A supremely engrossing film, Lawrence of Arabia makes one forget that it runs three and three-quarter hours: and sends one out haunted and shaken. [Sydney Morning Herald]
- There has never been another motion picture quite like Lawrence of Arabia. [Miami Herald]
- The big screen has frequently proved to be only too big; here it hardly seems big enough, and the implied compliment to Mr. Lean and his camera crew is considerable. [The Times]
Admission: $3.00 [covers both evenings!]

THURSDAY 12 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. ROBIN AND MARIAN
Long after their original adventures in Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood (Sean Connery) and his trusty sidekick, Little John (Nicol Williamson), fight alongside Richard the Lion- Heart (Richard Harris) in France. After Richard dies in battle, the pair revisit Sherwood, where Robin learns that his beloved Maid Marian (Audrey Hepburn) serves as mother superior at a nearby convent. When the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw) orders her arrest by royal edict, Robin faces his old nemesis one last time.
- James Goldman's script is razor-sharp, treating all characters, major and minor, with intelligence and compassion. The movie is shot in subdued hues, making the film more of a motion painting than picture. It is quite simply a film that must be seen - and once seen, treasured. [Los Angeles Times]
- A beautiful little movie, grossly underrated. Good chemistry between legendary stars with a realistic look and mature sensibilities, instead of the normal Hollywood gloss. Also liked the surprisingly emotional climax. [Metacritic]
- There are quite a few typical Lester gags on the fringes of its tale, but the movie is conceived and executed in an elegiac key, and played with an unfashionable depth of feeling, especially by Connery and Hepburn, both terrific. [Time Out ]
- This film is Robin Hood for grown-ups, it's poignant, funny, sad and thought- provoking. It's an elegy more than a film. It's about getting old, being more experienced, and death, but don't let that put you off. 5.0 out of 5 stars [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 13 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. MAYA PLISETSKAYA
Maya Plisetskaya, who was born just over a hundred years ago on 20 November 1925, was one of the most outstanding dancers of the second half of the 20th century. Immediately after graduation from the Moscow Choreography School she became well-known, creating her own style which is characterized by a brilliant technique, elegance, perfection of each individual gesture and pose, always in combination with her beautiful dramatic art and extraordinary musicality.
The main work in the programme is Carmen Suite, specially written for Plisetskaya with music arranged from Bizet by her husband, Rodion Shchedrin, and also included are the Rose Adagio from Sleeping Beauty, more Tchaikovsky in Romantic Encounter, Roland Petit's La Rose Malade and Bejart's tribute Ave Maya to the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria, danced by Plisetskaya when she was 75!
- Oh my, if you love ballet, this is perfection. [The Classic Review]
- FABULOUS!!!! Nothing more need be said. [Amazon]
- This excellent video captures performances from the latter period of Plisetskaya's career, 1976-80, with a more simplified example from 2000. Alonso's fascinating choreography [for Carmen-Suite] employs Maya's eye-popping full hip rotations in the pas de deux, and in most of her solo sequences, she is an earthy, confident, sexual woman but not wanton. Her Carmen struts and challenges, occasionally breaking into classical moves yet always returning to modern dance formations. [Fanfare]
Admission: $3.00

Artist biography : PARDINGTON DUBE

Pardington Dube is a Contemporary Visual Artist and Graphic Designer from Zimbabwe, whose work explores emotion, and the human experience through abstract and figurative expression.

A self-taught fine artist, Pardington's journey began with a passion for storytelling through bold, symbolic visual language. His signature style often features faceless figures, encouraging viewers to focus on emotion, body language, and environment, provoking reflection and connection.

Artist Statement:

"My work often explores themes of introspection, silent strength, and the unspoken narratives that shape our inner worlds. Through abstract and figurative forms, I blend raw textures, bold colour contrasts, and symbolic elements to provoke emotion and thought. I intentionally obscure facial features in many of my works to direct attention to posture, movement, and emotion, inviting the viewer to reflect inwardly.

My greatest inspiration comes from personal challenges and the desire to tell stories that inspire healing and transformation. Every brushstroke is an echo of my lived experience and other people's experience. Every piece is an invitation to connect, feel, and reflect.

Unveiled Silence is a personal journey of discovering my voice as an artist. Through faceless portraits, I'm honoring the untold stories, the pain, the healing, and the hope. This body of work is a reflection of unheard voices, moments of silence that carry the loudest emotions".

"Stringed Moments" with Barbs.

Thursday 19th February - 5pm - free entrance, wine offered

The Stringed Moments project is inspired by the lived experiences of Barbs, which range from surviving cervical cancer, endometriosis, a hysterectomy, a divorce, abuse, cardiac arrests and even living with an autoimmune disease. Each challenge came with its own set of lessons, but she's continually seen the power that comes with redefining and rebuilding your identity on your own terms. She has made it her life work to create space for this transformation for those searching for a better way to be, and Stringed Moments is a manifestation of that purpose.
