SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE SILK STOCKING When the murder of a penniless shopgirl is linked to the body of debutante Lady Alice Burnham, Sherlock Holmes (Rupert Everett) immediately begins to piece together the clues. The murky world of the menacing London docks collides with the glamour and glitter of Edwardian high society as Holmes and Dr. Watson (Ian Hart) are reunited to solve a case that threatens to overwhelm the privilege and tranquillity of aristocratic society. - It's a dark and gripping mystery that has as much of the feel of contemporary police drama as it does the classic Holmes cases. Everett in particular is excellent as a callous, almost cruel Holmes, with Hart dominating his scenes as a most forceful Watson. [Television Heaven] - This is the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes ever, on the small or big screens, and it also happens to be the closest to the literary Holmes. Everett treats us to a still-infallible yet completely-human Holmes. [Amazon] - The mystery is a good one. Acting was superb all around. Set design and production were fantastic. If you truly love 'whodunnits' then there's not much here not to love. [Rotten Tomatoes] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 16 JANUARY AT 6.30 P.M. A CHORUS LINE The original Broadway production of A Chorus Line opened fifty years ago and ran for a record 6,137 performances; the film followed ten years later directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Michael Douglas and Terrence Mann. In a Broadway theatre, director Zach judges dozens of dancers and their performances. After initial eliminations, sixteen hopefuls remain. Arriving late is former lead dancer Cassie, who once had a tempestuous romantic relationship with Zach but left him for Hollywood. Now she has not worked in over a year, and is desperate enough to be part of the chorus line. Zach, looking for eight dancers (four men and four women), has them introduce themselves and discomfort opens into revelation, confession leads to redemption. Based on real Broadway dancers' stories, as told to fellow dancer and choreographer Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line is funny, heartbreaking and refreshingly honest. - This is one of the most intelligent and compelling movie musicals in a long time - and the most grown up. [Chicago Sun-Times] - While conceding that the film medium cannot convey the same intensity as Michael Bennett's ingenious play, one still finds plenty of musical and emotional kicks in Richard Attenborough's conscientious screen adaptation. [Tampa Tribune] - Attenborough keeps the performances alive and the camera moving, and he has brought a stagy musical to glowing life. [Associated Press] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film and Red Carpet members] THURSDAY 22 JANUARY AT 6.30 P.M. DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS Con artist Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) is a longtime resident of a luxurious resort on the French Riviera, where he enjoys the fruits of his deceptions - that is, until a competitor, Freddy Benson (Steve Martin), shows up. When the new guy's lowbrow tactics impinge on his own work, Jamieson resolves to get rid of him. Confident of his own duplicitous talents, Jamieson challenges Benson to a winner-takes-all competition: whoever swindles a young American heiress out of fifty thousand dollars first can stay, while the other must leave town. - The chemistry between Martin and Caine is fun, and Glenn Headly provides a resilient foil as a woman who looks like a pushover but somehow never seems to topple. [Chicago Sun-Times] - Their comic methods are different, but from their first unequal encounter until the very last in a series of twist endings, Caine and Martin work together with an exuberant ease that's a joy to watch. [New York Times] - Caine and Martin are criminally cool together. Truly funny stuff. [FilmCritic.com] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] THURSDAY 29 JANUARY AT 6.30 P.M. DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE The final instalment of the Downton Abbey story is finally here and The Grand Finale picks up two years after Downton Abbey: A New Era, with much of the film's action centred on the scandal of the divorce of Lady Mary who becomes a social pariah, facing ostracisation and tarnishing the Crawley name. The family also faces significant financial difficulties, requiring tough decisions to keep Downton afloat. - I smiled, I laughed, and I maybe even wiped away a couple of tears, and that's exactly as it should be. [MovieFreak.com] - With a profound embrace of the changing times and clever winks at Downton devotees, writer Julian Fellowes and director Simon Curtis deliver a heart-swelling conclusion. [Variety] - All told, it's great fun and belts along. But it's over far too quickly - we may never see its like again. [RTE (Ireland)] - This is about as graceful and fitting an endnote as you could hope for. [Independent (UK)] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 30 JANUARY AT 6.30 P.M. GIORDANO: ANDREA CHENIER Andrea Chenier was a great success at its premiere at La Scala, Milan in 1896, full of heart-stopping big tunes and powerful emotional situations though it is not as well-known as it should be. It's a passionate love story set against the backdrop of turbulent real-life events of the French Revolution. Andrea Chenier is a poet, brought up in the lap of luxury, but unhappy with the social inequality around him. He's in love with Maddalena, a beautiful young aristocrat, but her family's servant Gerard also harbours a deep passion for her and, gaining power in the Revolution, condemns rival Chenier to death. Heartbroken, Maddalena pleads with him to change his mind and save Chenier. Disillusioned by the entire revolution Gerard regrets his actions, but can he save Chenier's life.. - Andrea Chenier may not be the best-known opera in the repertoire, but rarely has it been so magnificently served as in this production. [Tutti Magazine] - The man of the hour is Antonio Pappano who conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as if all their lives depended on it. [ BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2016 ****] - Captivating from start to finish, Giordano's flawed masterpiece Andrea Chenier is presented in a sterling production under director David McVicar.
