BEAUTIFUL BULAWAYO

Beautiful Bulawayo has indeed blossomed with this unexpected early start to the rainy season. The ditches and road verges are resplendent with wildflowers.
The Lion's Ear - brilliant orange sometimes called the Minaret flowers, the brilliant red Tumbleweed stands proudly in the veld, our national flower - the Flame lily hides shyly in the dense grass after the prolific rains, and the Wild Hibiscus is bountiful but often goes unnoticed. Even Storm Lillies abound, seldom seen in the dryer seasons, and the Wild Iris is very evident, we also saw a field of tubular Rain Lilies, a real treat during this glorious and unusual wet season.

HeeHoo and I took a Sunday foray to the Hillside Dams and were thrilled with the care and attention the dams have been afforded by the Hillside Dams Conservancy. My childhood involved almost weekly visits to walk around the dams and often listen to the BSAP Band playing on the verdant lawns. The Lower Dam struggles to fill but the Upper Dam was half full and beautiful. One of the most fabulous sections at the Hillside Dams is the Aloe Garden, I believe there are over 40 species of Aloes in Zimbabwe and many of them are tastefully featured at the Dams, amidst the beautiful rock formations. There is ample and clever drainage and nicely constructed paths meandering through the Aloes with strategically placed shady benches and tables for visitors to sit and commune with the peace and nature. One of the paths leads enticingly to the top of one of the massive granite extrusions where a magnificent view of the canopy is offered. The array of indigenous trees is fascinating, all of them revelling in the bounteous rains we have been having.

At the top of the Upper Dam is the Waterfront, a fun filled children's escape with kayaking, trampolines and zip lining. The Waterfront is also a popular venue for picnics, weddings and parties - so green and verdant with stunning views. After a very pleasant breakfast at the restaurant, (with excellent coffee too) we decided to take a peek into Lyn's garden and exciting Christmas Cottage

The Bromeliads were in flower and were breathtaking, the entire garden was an unexpected paradise and her 'Christmas Cottage' was filled with exquisite Christmas decor as only Lyn knows how.

From the heart of Beautiful Bulawayo we wish you a wonderful Christmas and we pray the New Year will be kind to all our wonderful citizens and to all our special people scattered all over the World.

Featuring a stellar cast, Love Actually follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London.
- Sit back, and gawp at Ideal Britain. Revel in the tipsy plot. And enjoy a film full of adult whimsy and adolescent whingeing. [The Times]
- A polished, fluid production with impeccable technical credits and a winning soundtrack, Love Actually is the very definition of entertainment and is guaranteed to bring joy to the world this Christmas. [Screen International]
- Forget about stiff upper lips. Though very British, this irresistible ensemble comedy will easily coax full-sized grins of enjoyment from viewers. [People Magazine]
- Bittersweet and hilarious, this is lovely, actually. Prepare to be smitten. [BBC.com]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 19 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. TWO BALLETS FOR CHRISTMAS: LES PATINEURS AND A CHRISTMAS CAROL [PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE]
Les Patineurs (The Skaters) was choreographed by Frederick Ashton as long ago as 1937. Set on a frozen pond, couples and groups of friends joyfully skate their way through an afternoon: on come the corps de ballet, sliding across the, ice to be followed by rather less expert girls whose inexperience is shown up when a boy in blue comes on and spins, turns and leaps with superb virtuosity. Two no less expert girls who indulge in a multiplicity of spins and pirouettes, and a couple in white dance a lyrical and beautiful adagio. The fun becomes faster and more furious until eventually snow starts to fall and the dancers glide away, leaving the blue boy spinning round and round as the curtain falls.
Northern Ballet's A Christmas Carol was a hit when it premiered in 1992, It's a ballet, but also a bit of a musical with the dancers sometimes singing carols, the themes of which wind through Carl Davis's score and it's also a bit panto! The story is faithful to Dickens with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come causing Scrooge to realise that his selfish ways are the cause of his miserable life. Coming face to face with his past, present and future brings him to embrace the joy and wonder of life and celebrate the Christmas season along with the rest of the townsfolk.
- This is a ballet to see over and over again to appreciate not only its invention, good humour and variety but also the virtuosity of the dancers involved, not least Steven McRae in the part of the Blue Boy who ends the ballet with a seemingly endless series of pirouettes as the curtain comes down. [MusicWeb International]
- This is a superlative, joyous Northern Ballet production of the timeless Dickens Christmas tale. [The Reviews Hub]
- A magical night in snow-globe Victoriana! Beautifully staged and danced with bonneted and bewhiskered brio, Dickens's classic dose of festive escapism is the gift that keeps on giving [The Guardian]
