I know it is necessary ..... but give me the old and the familiar any day. Take the dear old Bulawayo Airport .. or rather the Joshua Nkomo Airport .... its just always been there...and now it is being demolished for something bigger, grander, more international, just what the country needs right now with our over abundance of tourists and our two flights a day !! The only foreign visitors we get at the moment are people who are coming to shoot our animals. (That's apart from our offspring who are all foreign exiles too now ) Why am I sad I ask myself ? For years now the Bulawayo Airport has been tatty, dilapidated, and run down. The phones haven't worked for ages, the tea room has not seen a decent glass, or a diet coke in years, but it was always the most friendly little airport in the whole world. And that dear familiar old veranda has always made up for all the other faults. One would watch ones loved ones depart through that inefficient makeshift wooden customs and immigration area into the departure lounge and then rush upstairs to wave goodbye. In which other large airport in the world is that possible ? How many yellow ribbons have been waved enthusiastically over the balustrade of that veranda, how many welcoming cheers and shrieks have been shouted to the passengers as they climbed down the stairs of the planes just meters away from their families. The aeroplanes at the Bulawayo airport sometimes parked so close to the folks on the elevated veranda that often the glasses and bottles were even blown off the table by the wind from the aeroplane's engines !! How many tears have been shed as loved ones were waved across the tarmac leaving the country, going to university, going on army call up ? We will always remember with fondness and horror combined, those ancient old Viscounts which have now been replaced with the 747s and the South African "puddle hoppers" which now grace our tarmac once or twice a day. That veranda must have seen some sights in its day. And it is not loved because of it's ambience trust me. Cold grey cement, chipped tables and chairs, no roof, torrents of rain in summer, often stinking hot, and in winter it is colder and windier than the arctic circle !! But now that they are building a new airport will it ever be the same again ? We will sorely miss it !! But then maybe the plans for the new airport will include a similar little veranda and history can continue, who knows ? ++++++++++++ NOTICES HELP !! HELP !! HELP !! One of our precious pensioners is in distress. An elderly gentleman who is an amputee has received an account for nearly three million Zimbabwe dollars from a local hospital. The gentleman was rushed into hospital with a serious medical emergency only to find that his medical aid had expired for non payment. Can we all possibly get together and raise funds to cover this expense. Three million Zimbabwe dollars works out at approx £236.00 Cheques can be made out to "Mater Dei Hospital" but sent to me in the first instance for collation. email - magskriel@mac.com +++++++++++ ROY Hi folks- come on -lets show the Bennett family that we have great admiration for their courage and "staying power' and that we deplore the actions of those who incarcerated him. . Section 20 of the Value Added Tax (General) Regulations, 2003 states that the clock starts ticking on the interest 60 days from the date the VAT 7 form was stamped as received by Zimra. However, refunds have to be audited and Zimra personnel will 'phone you to check your claim. If they 'phone and you agree to the time they suggest for the audit, the 60 days is still counted from the date the VAT 7 form was stamped. However, there is a caveat in the Act which is sneaky. Basically, if you advise the Zimra officials that their suggested time is not convenient and offer an alternative time, then the 60 days is only taken from the day of the audit. With the way the Act is worded, when you know you are due a refund you should furnish your form as early as possible. Remember, the 60 days is calculated from the date the VAT 7 form is furnished to Zimra provided you don't delay their audit visit. You must furnish a written claim for the interest and to calculate it you need to produce a schedule with the following information: Date of VAT 7 Amount of Refund 60 days date 24.2.2004 2 000 000.00 24/4/04 31.3.2004 3 000 000.00 30/05/04 29.4.2004 4 000 000.00 28/06/04 Then apply the bank base lending rate and calculate the sum due. Lodge your claim and once you receive your telegraphic draft – enjoy it! Taken from Tax Guardian IF THIS INFORMATION BENEFITS YOU PLEASE GIVE A GENEROUS DONATION TO EDITH DULY NURSING HOME AND NOTIFY MORNING MIRROR OF THE AMOUNT. Thank you. F FARMER F. Farmer Consultants - ffarmer@gatorzw.com ++++++++ ZIMBABWE SQUASH - INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT HELD IN BULAWAYO Neil Nesbit and Mike Burns won the men's doubles 3-1 even though Mike had broken the one finger of his-racket-holding-hand, the day before the tournament, so this was quite a feat to still win a hard fought battle. This is the first time in about 4 years that this tournament has been held and Neil Nesbit and his committee worked extremely hard to get it off the ground. They managed to raise 20 million dollars which went towards the prizes to try and entice players from around Africa to enter and they ended up getting players from Mauritius, Zambia, SA, Botswana Namibia etc to enter. The catering and running of the tournament was very well done and I know personally that everyone who entered had a superb weekend. So a big Congratulations must go to Neil and his committee for all the hard work they put in to make this tournament so successful. She has also made many visits to the United States where she premiered a Piano Concerto written by Paul Renan and where she appeared several times with the New York Musica Viva. The New York Concert Review wrote of her last visit: "She is a fine pianist; her technique is solid and effortless, her tone remarkably warm and rich, she played with great style and expressiveness". PROGRAMME Jeanette has chosen a programme as challenging and beautiful as any she has brought to a Zimbabwe concert hall. Debussy: Twelve Etudes Dedicated to the memory of Chopin, Debussy's Twelve Studies were his last major work for solo piano and were written in 1915 after a period of depression at the beginning of the First World War. They are difficult in the extreme and even the composer wrote to his friend and publisher, "some of them terrify your fingers. You may be sure that mine sometimes halt at certain passages. I have to stop and recover my breath as after a stiff climb". Nevertheless, they are far more than a set of technical exercises and each study tests a specific skill in wonderfully accessible music that begins with broad humour and ends in fierce defiance, alternating poetry and brilliance along the way. In Bryce Morrison's words, they 'are increasingly performed by intrepid and enterprising pianists. For them they are, perhaps, the most dazzling and exploratory of all studies… Here Debussy captures the impossible, the quintessence of gaiety and introspection, gliding effortlessly from manic hyperactivity to the ultimate still centre in music sufficiently evocative to haunt and unsettle even the most sanguine nature.' Schumann: Fantasy in C major, Opus 17 The original inspiration for Schumann's Fantasy was to contribute to Liszt's fund-raising for a Beethoven monument in Bonn but it became a passionate declaration of his feelings for Clara Wieck. The two had been passionately in love for some time and when he began the work in 1836, Clara's father had forbidden them to meet or correspond and Schumann believed her lost for ever so that the first movement is an expression of his love cleverly weaving references to Beethoven's "To the Distant Beloved" into the texture. The middle movement relates more to the original conception, a march-like rondo, proud and vigorous in Beethoven's most heroic key, E flat major, while in the slow last movement Schumann enters a spiritual world in which conflicts are over: he has resigned himself to separation from Clara and has come to accept her as a tranquil memory so that the music is finally able to sink to rest in a radiant C major. Booking is open at Meikles and tickets are free to members, $10 000 and $5 000 to non-members. BPO CONCERT The last BPO concert of the year takes place in ST.JOHN'S CATHEDRAL on Saturday 27 November at 8.15 when the programme will include three flute concertos by Vivaldi and Cimarosa's Magnificat as well as Christmas carols. Booking opens at Meikles on Monday, 15 November for subscribers and on Friday, 19 November for the public. More details nearer the time. +++++ THE IRISH ASSOCIATION IS ALIVE AND WELL IN ZIMBABWE !! It is an inescapable fact that crime is part of our society. If you take the necessary precautions, you need not become another statistic where crime has taken place. Just a few quick tips on what to avoid: 1. Don't travel with large amounts of cash. You are being observed from many areas, whether it is from the bank or businesses. These men know you, sometimes better than you know yourself. If you have to travel with a large amount of cash, go immediately from the area you have collected it and take it to where you want it kept, either bank, office or home! Nipping into that shop for a drink, could be detrimental to you. 2. Change routes - we are creatures of habit and the criminals know that, so don't travel the same way all the time. 3. Change routines - again creatures of habit. You might even enjoy the change. 4. Be aware who is around your vehicle and home at all times that obviously are convenient for you - DO NOT LIVE WITH NARROW VISION, OBSERVE AT ALL TIMES WHEN OUT OF YOUR HOME AND OFFICE ENVIRONMENT - Be Aware. 5. If someone has just left your home and the bell immediately goes, do not think it is that person returning in case they have forgotten something, sometimes it is the criminals playing on that idea and will come in if you have not checked first as to who is at the gate or door. Do not be eager to open without first checking. 6. Always check police, CID and CIO ID's before allowing them into your property, even phone the police station that they say they are from. BE POLITE to these people, 21 days inside is not a good idea. Read the POS Act carefully to understand the laws in this country. 7. Do not pick up strangers at any time. 8. Do not park your vehicles outside your property or a friends home just because you are popping in for a few minutes. That is all the time criminals need to open your vehicle to steal it or take something from inside. The wish list continues for the office in Bulawayo and I still need the following: • Bulawayo Street Map to put up on wall - have been offered to have one copied, but that is a huge amount of copying to be done, and I thank that person for the offer, unless someone wants to copy it for me. • Still require funding of my telephone bill - people this is getting too much for me to pay out of my volunteer salary. Some companies help with paying $ 100 000-00 but this is not regular and now with the increase my costs are running into nearly $ 300 000-00. • Fuel is a big problem - one company sponsors a tank, but now have had to pull back a little because of the fuel shortage which is understandable, but again this is serious for without the fuel I cannot visit victims, give speeches or visit the police. This Trust is to the benefit of Bulawayo Community, and I am begging for your assistance in these matters. The other wish list is for the Christmas Party for the victims and sponsors - yes I need to let my hair down too! Thankfully we have a venue, now we need the following: Individuals or companies to sponsor an hour each for the drinks Sponsor or donation of food to be prepared into snacks - I already have some women that have offered their free time to make the snacks up Invites to be printed and sent out I would like to thank those companies that have helped this month: Clan Hubert Davies Hillside Hardware For their donations and continual support to me. November will be the last month on the 16th for the support group. We will start up again in February 2005, so keep the third Tuesday of every month free, for the support group if you are a victim of hijacking, attempted hijacked and house robberies. We are there for each other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. The service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private sectors to help us survive. Once again, take care TRACEY BURNS crime@mweb.co.zw ++++++++ Is anyone going to Cape Town in the near future who is prepared to take a small box of books(8kg)? May the mountains standing by you ever guard you, And the rivers wash your spirit bright and clean; May the animals and birds sing of the peace that is to come And not the glory of a land that might have been. May God be with you and keep you strong; May your tomorrows be rich and long. May the lives that have been taken be for reason, And the pain that you have suffered make you strong. May the seeds that you have sown bring out the fullness of the future - May God give you the strength to right their wrongs. It's just a dream, I know - but dreams set you free Dreaming can ease your mind . . . and bring you peace May the sweetness of your soil yet bring you riches, And your pastures ever fill your belly's needs, May the nations that you harbour find a way to live as one; Keep your standards high - do not give in to greed. May God be with you and keep you strong; May your tomorrows be rich and long.
