Morning Mirror Edition 1130 - 15/11/2025 www.morningmirror.africanherd.com Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home - the Edith Duly Nursing home ++++ 1) WATCH DOG O.R. TAMBO AIRPORT - BEWARE Beware of the very light fingered baggage handlers at O.R Tambo International Airport. I would not normally make a fuss but I personally have had my hand luggage broken into three times now and family members have had hand luggage and checked-in luggage with locks removed and rifled. My advice - don't lock your case as it could be irreparably damaged, just don't pack anything valuable. They don't seem to bother with clothing, they are looking for cash, mobile phones, sun glasses and the like, although I did find someone else track suit trousers in my luggage once!! Make sure you keep your valuables on your person in a small bag that will fit into the tiny overhead bins. My daughter, the intrepid, investigative journalist, has delved into the thievery and was dismayed to find to what extent the problem had reached, she has made up a very clever song about it too which she probably would have flighted by now, if she had not found out how desperate the situation is for those at the top. We might all have to resort to good old cling wrap, something we have never done, and as dedicated travellers, we have never had any problems anywhere in the world apart from O.R Tambo!! ++++ 2) EDITORIAL ROCK ON GRANDMOTHERS ! To those who see today's grandmothers and notice only grey hair and gentle smiles, let us reintroduce ourselves. We were the wild souls of the '60s and '70s. We wore mini skirts so short they made headlines, boots that climbed past our knees, bell bottoms pants and platform shoes. We burnt our bras, banned the bomb, wore flowers in our hair, went to Woodstock and raced for the moon. We didn't just witness change-we sparked it. We had Flower Power, Lava Lamps, Peace Brother, Tie & Dye tee shirts, Our music was rebellion set to rhythm. The Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Sonny and Cher, The Everley Brothers, Chubby Checker and CCR -they weren't background noise. They were our voice. We sang loudly, played records until they wore out, and let the music move us-heart and soul. We rocked and rolled, twisted the night away, danced the limbo, the monkey, the locomotion, the monster mash and the mashed potato. We raced through cities on roaring motorcycles and mopeds, zipped around in Mini Coopers and VW Beetles with windows down and freedom as our only destination. We sipped Babycham, Cinzano and Lemonade, gin and tonics in smoky bars, danced barefoot in fields soaked with rain and rock 'n' roll. We went to the movies and watched Tarzan, Tom and Jerry, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, A Hards Day's Night, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Sound of Music and Dr Zhivago. We didn't have Wi-Fi, filters, or phones glued to our hands. Our memories weren't uploaded-they were lived. With flowers in our hair or beehive hairstyles, sandals on our feet, and hearts blazing, we built a world that pushed back, stood tall, and refused to be silenced. So when you see us now, remember-we were fierce long before hashtags. We didn't just dream of change. We became it. Rock on, young ones. We already did. ++++ 3) Hatches, Matches And Dispatches Geoff Sommer Deepest sympathy to Rifca, Jaimie, Henry and all the family. ++++ DAVE GILL Dave Gill passed away in Spain after undergoing surgery. A very special man - he worked tirelessly for our old age pensioners, first for SOAP (Supporting Old Age Pensioners) and then for Senior Citizens Medical, running a clinic at Coronation Cottages, providing free medical services to our oldies. He was dedicated to our pensioners for many years and we remember him with great respect. Sympathy and thoughts to his wife Bonnie and to his two sons and their families. ++++ HEATHER WAGSTAFF We were so very sad to hear news of Heather passing away. She was a such a beloved friend. Heather wore many hats and was highly regarded by the pupils at Girls College. Not only for her obvious tennis coaching talents, but also for her mentorship to the young ladies growing up. Sharing her with them the smallest things from table etiquette, and which cutlery to use, and even how to sit and behave like lady. She was always happy to share all her nuggets of information with anyone who was interested. The fruits of which will hopefully be handed down from these girls to their own children. Baking meringues was certainly her forte. And her date balls were legendary. I was lucky enough to get the recipe in her own writing, which I cherish. I think of her every time I make them. She was such a dear friend to me, and she also belonged to our sewing group, where we would be treated to her fabulous sense of humour. With her telling us stories, which came with all the actions, and she would have us in absolute stitches. We were very blessed to enjoy such happy times in her company. Once we both left Bulawayo, we kept in touch daily, and our friendship continued, despite us living in different countries. Such a special person who will be remembered with much love by all those whose lives she touched. May she rest in glorious peace. See you on the other side. ALMOST FAMOUS Released 25 years ago but set in 1973, Almost Famous chronicles the funny and often poignant coming of age of 15-year-old William, an unabashed music fan who is inspired by the seminal bands of the time. When his love of music lands him an assignment from Rolling Stone magazine to interview the up-and-coming band Stillwater, William embarks on an eye-opening journey with the band's tour, despite the objections of his protective mother. - A movie bursting with affection, good-natured humour and adolescent yearning. It's easily the best film of the year so far. [News & Observer] - It rocks hard and sweetly, making that past live and sing for us. I loved this movie madly, and so will many of you. [Chicago Tribune] - Oh, what a lovely film. I was almost hugging myself while I watched it. [Chicago Sun-Times] - Almost Famous, with its great ensemble performances and story, is a well-crafted, warm-hearted movie that successfully draws you into its era. [Rotten Tomatoes] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 21 NOVEMBER AT 8.00 P.M. KEVIN FRASER: HEART OF THE WORLD Hosted by the Academy but NOT an Academy presentation. They say the world has seven continents. But only one has a heartbeat. Africa. Not just a place - but the pulse that reminds us how to laugh, dance, and keep going when life says 'Hayi, khona!' (Not today). Somewhere between gumboots and gospel, beneath baobabs and above the bassline, a potjie has been bubbling for generations - stories, secrets, spices, and that unspoken flavour we call gees. And out of that stew rises Kevin Fraser - comedian, cultural translator, and part-time potjie genie - ready to stir it all with satire, sneakers, and a suspiciously deep understanding of aunties. FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MAYA PLISETSKAYA:A TRIBUTE IN FIVE BALLETS. Maya Plisetskaya, who was born a hundred years ago on 20 November 1925, was one of the most outstanding dancers of the second half of the 20th century. Immediately after graduation from the Moscow Choreography School she became well-known, creating her own style which is characterized by a brilliant technique, elegance, perfection of each individual gesture and pose, always in combination with her beautiful dramatic art and extraordinary musicality. The main work in the programme is Carmen Suite, specially written for Plisetskaya with music arranged from Bizet by her husband, Rodion Shchedrin (who died in September) and also included are the Rose Adagio from Sleeping Beauty, more Tchaikovsky in Romantic Encounter, Roland Petit's La Rose Malade and Bejart's tribute Ave Maya to the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria, danced by Plisetskaya when she was 75! - Oh my, if you love ballet, this is perfection. [The Classic Review] - FABULOUS!!!! Nothing more need be said. [Amazon] - This excellent video captures performances from the latter period of Plisetskaya's career, 1976-80, with a more simplified example from 2000. Alonso's fascinating choreography [for Carmen-Suite] employs Maya's eye-popping full hip rotations in the pas de deux, and in most of her solo sequences, she is an earthy, confident, sexual woman but not wanton. Her Carmen struts and challenges, occasionally breaking into classical moves yet always returning to modern dance formations. [Fanfare] Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] SUNDAY 30 NOVEMBER AT 4.00 P.M. MICHAEL BROWNLEE WALKER (PIANO): ACADEMY FUND-RAISING CONCERT! Michael is well remembered as one of the Academy's outstanding students and he is playing this concert as a fund-raiser for the Academy. His programme is entitled 'Anniversaries' and all the music is by composers with anniversaries in 2025. It will include: - Grunfeld: Soiree de Vienne, Op.56 (Paraphrase on Waltzes from Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus) [Strauus was born in 1825) - Ravel: Sonatine [Ravel was born in 1875] - Satie - Gnossiennes Nos.1-3 [Satie died in 1925] - Moszkowski: Chanson Boheme de l'Opera Carmen de Georges Bizet [Moszkowski died in 1825 - and Bizet in 1875!] - Moszkowski: Valse brillante and a selection of short pieces This is all very approachable music and the Moszkowski salon pieces in the second part of the programme are delightful, once enormously popular, now sadly neglected. Admission $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members] THURSDAY 4 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES A week late because of a hall booking! 27 November is Thanksgiving Day in America and all that Neal Page (Steve Martin) wants to do is to get home for the celebration. When bad weather cancels his flight, he decides on other means of transportation but, as well as bad luck, Neal is blessed with the presence of Del Griffith (John Candy), shower-curtain-ring salesman who is never short of advice, conversation, bad jokes or company. And then he decides that he is going the same direction as Neal.. - This is a 4 star comedy film, it's one of the few truly great comedies. [rogerebert.com] - It's a great comedy, and a deeply touching one, too. [Film Threat] - Thanks to the impeccable chemistry between Steve Martin and John Candy, as well as a deft mix of humour and heart, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a hilarious, heartfelt holiday classic. [Rotten Tomatoes] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 5 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MUSIC BY SHOSTAKOVICH One of the greatest composer of the 20th Century, Dmitri Shostakovich died fifty years ago and this concert commemorates him with three very different works: - Suite for Variety Orchestra - Concerto in C minor for Piano Trumpet and Strings, Op.35 - Symphony No.11 in G minor, Op.103 - ' The Year 1905' The symphony is a gripping portrait of the 1905 Russian Revolution written to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday massacre where hundreds of peaceful demonstrators were killed outside the Winter Palace. The event triggered a wave of strikes and unrest that ultimately led to the first Russian Revolution. - Chailly's direction [of the Variety Suite] is good-humoured, affectionate and utterly professional. [Gramophone] - Impeccably vivid playing from the Mariinsky orchestra ensures Gergiev is wonderful at depicting the cinematic pictorialism of the music. [Guardian] - Performed here with total conviction, Gergiev's account is simply hair-raising. Even by today's high standard of orchestral playing, I suspect some orchestras would have trouble keeping up with Gergiev's driving, intensity. [Financial Times] Admission $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER AT 3.30 P.M. THE PHOENIX CHOIR The Phoenix Choir return with a seasonal programme called 'Christmas Joy' Admission $5.00 DATES FOR YOUR DIARY! THURSDAY 18 DECEMBER DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE The very final episode of the hugely popular family saga Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale finds Mary in a public scandal and the family facing financial trouble. But it also delivers exactly what long-time fans hoped for - a heartfelt, elegant farewell that ties up the stories of both upstairs and downstairs with grace and satisfaction.
