JACARANDA SPOTTING

The wearing of the colour of the jacarandas is obligatory in Zimbabwe in October. I have a dear natty little purple outfit that gets worn faithfully every year at this time.

It must be in the blood, as something strange always happens to Bulawayans at this time of the year. It starts hotting up in July, It is a bit like watching a tennis match as one sets off into town for a "hunting and gathering " session.
Heads twisting and turning in glee, WHO WILL SPOT THE FIRST JACARANDA BLOSSOM

Well last year it was Tracey, who one year saw them in July but this year it was Bruce McDonald from his High Castle in Ascot who as early as 29 August, saw the first pale lilac spring buds !! Frank Reynolds comes second this year!!

Says Jacaranda Spotter Bruce 'Up here in my Erie there is a magnificent sight each day. In the evening over 400 sacred ibis fly into the trees opposite here and every morning just after six, against a golden sky, they fly out for the day. Some of them pass so close that you can hear their wing-beats."

Back to Jacarandas - now the tree pundits cower in horror at the thought of these frightful "Exotics" but we old timers live breathe and eat happiness during Jacaranda blossom time, which lasts I might add, from now until February !! I heard with horror that they were culling Jacaranda trees in the Matopos some years ago!

Spring time brings madness to many places in the world, they hurtle round maypoles in England, they eat giant white asparagus and drink tart new Beaujolais in France. In China they decorate their front doors with bright banners featuring the Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) You have a bit of leeway here with your decor as you can either hang the poster the correct way up, or upside down if you feel that way !!

In Ireland they have Morris dancing and ceilidhs, in Argentina the school kids are given the day off from their studies.

But in September/October we have traditionally celebrated the Jacarandas. Do you remember the Jacaranda Festivals of days gone by When shop windows, especially Meikles and Haddon and Sly, would dress their windows in a glorious profusion of lilac, lavender, amethyst, heliotrope and tanzanite.

Of course Borrow Street Pool would open on the First of September and then on the second Saturday of Spring the Jacaranda Ball would be held at the MacMurray Hall in the Grand Hotel. Aah, that sprung dance floor made of highly polished wood, we would "trip the light fantastic" till dawn and at midnight the Jacaranda Queen would be crowned !!

Names spring to mind of beautiful Bulawayo girls like Gaynor Watts, Lorna Levin and Wendy Jocks, all Jacaranda Queens from an Halcyon Age.....

Don't forget the Jacaranda Float procession where all the big names in Business would lend their trucks to various organisations, schools and clubs and a magnificent array of "Floats" would parade through the city streets.

The Jacaranda Queen and her Princesses would be on the front float, sitting in gilded thrones borrowed from the theatre club, dressed in of course the beautiful colours of the Jacaranda Blossoms.

This year I noticed a couple of Tree Wisterias, laden with their heavy lilac garlands, which were trying vain to outshine the Jacarandas and they were doing a very good job too !!

PAT WALKDEN

It is with a great sense of sadness that the South African tennis community mourns the loss of tennis legend Patricia Molly 'Pat' Walkden Pretorius. Pat was born in Bulawayo and turned professional and started representing South Africa in 1968. In this year she caused an upset beating Virginia Wade, the number one seed at Wimbledon on centre court. She reached the French Open doubles final in 1967 and reached the semi-finals of the Wimbledon mixed doubles event in 1972.
In 1972, together with Brenda Kirk, they made history by winning the Federation Cup(now known as the BJKing Cup for South Africa at Ellis Park. This win cemented her status as one of our tennis legends! In 1973 Pat helped the South African team reach the finals of the Federation Cup in Germany.
Pat was an inspiration to many young players who followed in her footsteps. She mentored her younger teammates like Ilana Kloss and Linky Boshoff when they started on the WTA tour. Pat retired in 1974 and then took up golf where she also excelled.
She will be remembered for her dedication and determination, for her sharp sense of humour, her sportsmanship, her humility and above all the tennis legacy that will be remembered in South African tennis history.
Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

THURSDAYS 2, 9 & 16 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE HONOURABLE WOMANeptember. Eight years after taking over the family company from her brother Ephra Stein, Anglo-Jewish businesswoman Nessa Stein has been made a life peer for her continued commitment to the Middle East peace process but when her new business partner dies in a mysterious suicide, Lady Stein is forced to delay the third phase of an ambitious and long-planned project - connecting the West Bank with optical fibre cables - as various stakeholders manoeuvre for influence in connection with this venture.
The most satisfying, densely plotted TV series for years [The Guardian]
The Honourable Woman is in many ways an extremely impressive piece of work. [Slate]
Admission: $3.00/$10.00 the series [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. BOITO: MEFISTOFELE
First performed in its revised version on 4 October 1875, Boito's Mefistofele takes the familiar Faust legend but also adapts more of Goethe's drama so that the opera begins with Satan's challenge to God in a Prologue in Heaven employing a vast chorus and orchestra, incorporates other episodes after the death of Margherita and ends with Faust's redemption. Boito was Verdi's librettist for Otello and Falstaff and, if you enjoy Verdi, then you'll certainly enjoy this too. The opera steers a course between grandeur, comedy and tragedy and the lavish production gives all three their due. The action is variously updated so that the Easter Sunday festivities include a medieval pageant in the generally Victorian setting whilst the Witches' Sabbath takes place in a rather seedy night-club! It's all very entertaining, musically splendid and wonderfully well sung.
This Mefistofele is most definitely a show. It's grand opera and its almost insanely grand, with decadent sets and costumes, a massive choral sound and a big, brassy orchestra. The evening was capped by a magnetic account of the title role from a singer who succeeded in holding the stage even, with all the action going on around him. [Opera Traveller]
All in all, this is a tremendous performance of this unjustly neglected opera, superbly filmed and recorded. [Amazon]
The singing voices of three superb artists and 90-plus men, women, angels and demons enlivened director Carsen's over-the-top trappings with moments of lyric beauty and drama. [Bachtrack]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER AT 6.00 P.M. MAGIC SHOW: JOHN HAYNS
John Hayns will be remembered from previous visits and an hour full of entertainment and mystery is guaranteed! Please support the performance which is in aid of the Bulawayo Help Network.
Tickets available from the Academy, Bulawayo Help Network office and LNA Zonkizizwe.
Admission $5.00

FRIDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. GIGI Carriages: 8.40 p.m.
Gigi is too well known to need much introduction! It was based on a novella by Colette about a French teenager (Leslie Caron) raised by courtesans and trained in the art of being a proper mistress to a gentleman. Filmed partly on location in Paris, it includes the classic songs 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls', 'I Remember It Well', 'The Night They Invented Champagne' and 'Gigi' and dominated the Oscars with nine wins.
I definitely have to rate Gigi as one of the most charming musicals ever made [IMDb]
It's a naughty but nice romp of the hyper-romantic naughty 90s of Paris-in-the-spring, in the Bois, in Maxim's, and in the boudoir. How can it miss [Variety]
Gigi is absolutely timeless! It's almost 70 years since Gigi won the Best Picture Oscar and it remains as fresh and delightful as the day it was made. [Amazon]
It's an adorable confection, light and airy. [ReelViews]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film and Red Carpet members]
