As I reached marriageable age, what fun it was to pore over the 'Matched' section of The Chronicle.
Seeing the names of my school friends, proudly update their status from Oneness. Ringing out their futures.
Hours invested, friends consulted and mothers rallied to decide:
How many column inches, typesetting bold or not, will the heading be one or two lines above the print !
Of course, we the girls wanted a quarter page. Such flamboyance was frowned upon by our conservative elders, whose narrowed eyes chided "Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips."
Once consensus was reached by Team Daughter, the ad was placed, we purpled with impatience and then OH! The day arrived. Our names in print.
Dads, who were mainly excluded from the process, due to their total 'What's all the fuss about,' were presented with the invoice.
A moment of silence before eyebrows shot up and a 'for a tiny little entry on practically the back page' escaped incredulous lips.
Sighs wafted around the room, a slight clenching of jaws and knowing looks exchanged.
All females present understood training wheels.
Dads failed to observe, yet. Their financial resistance was being ever so slightly erased.
Moving mindset, and their wallets, into position for the BIG EVENT.
How I wonder, the many homes across the globe, occupied with Jacaranda-loving women, clearing out their cupboards to come across a yellowed block of newsprint.

The Honourable Woman is a sophisticated British spy series that centres on Middle East politics and is as relevant today as it was ten years ago when it was first shown, perhaps even more so. Swan Lake has a special place in The Royal Ballet's repertory. This production by Liam Scarlett features additional choreography whilst remaining faithful to Petipa and Ivanov's classic. John Macfarlane's opulent designs provide an atmospheric, period setting for this enthralling love story, illuminated by Tchaikovsky's sublime score. Marianela Nunez brings both poignancy and glitter to the dual role of Odette / Odile, with Vadim Muntagirov as the yearning Prince Siegfried, while the corps de ballet are showcased at their spellbinding best as the enchanted swans and cygnets.
- What a magnificent achievement this is. The young choreographer Liam Scarlett has given Covent Garden its first new Swan Lake in 30 years, and it's a winner. Big, bold and beautiful, it's completely distinctive - Scarlett has put his stamp all over this production - yet it honours the traditions of the Royal Ballet. [The Times]

FRIDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. BOITO: MEFISTOFELE
First performed in its revised version on 4 October 1875, Boito's Mefistofele takes the familiar Faust legend but also adapts more of Goethe's drama so that the opera begins with Satan's challenge to God in a Prologue in Heaven employing a vast chorus and orchestra, incorporates other episodes after the death of Margherita and ends with Faust's redemption. Boito was Verdi's librettist for Otello and Falstaff and, if you enjoy Verdi, then you'll certainly enjoy this too. The opera steers a course between grandeur, comedy and tragedy and the lavish production gives all three their due. The action is variously updated so that the Easter Sunday festivities include a medieval pageant in the generally Victorian setting whilst the Witches' Sabbath takes place in a rather seedy night-club! It's all very entertaining, musically splendid and wonderfully well sung.
- This Mefistofele is most definitely a show. It's grand opera and its almost insanely grand, with decadent sets and costumes, a massive choral sound and a big, brassy orchestra. The evening was capped by a magnetic account of the title role from a singer who succeeded in holding the stage even, with all the action going on around him. [Opera Traveller]
- All in all, this is a tremendous performance of this unjustly neglected opera, superbly filmed and recorded. [Amazon]
- The singing voices of three superb artists and 90-plus men, women, angels and demons enlivened director Carsen's over-the-top trappings with moments of lyric beauty and drama. [Bachtrack]
