Shower Caps

I was looking at the shower cap that had been set, neatly in a small white box, on the complimentary toiletries tray in the villa where we stayed with precious family in Thailand. Now these shower caps are very useful, as that talented decorator and home designer, Sue Alderton, once told me. When one wants to keep ones carpet clean, put a pair of shower caps over ones shoes, and hey presto!! In this particular Villa, the shower had a mind of its own, and a shower cap was necessary to contend with the vagaries of the water!!

This shower cap was bio degradable apparently, I wondered if this would still have the same shoe protection qualities Who wears a shower cap I mused to myself, Mom used to wear them, but my unruly locks have to be washed daily to look halfway acceptable!! That led my mind to the days when we used to wear our hair 'flicked' up like Dusty Springfield. In order to keep them flicked, a certain method of styling was needed, to give graduated support at the base, but it work just as well if curled up over the finger and fixed with bobby pins overnight!

Then there were those Helen Shapiro hairstyles, the beehive! You know the one where the long hair is swept back high off the face, secured with an elastic band, and then a massive display of curls was artfully arranged like a great bowl of oranges, on top of the head!! 'Upswept' I think it was sometimes called, some stylists could manage this beautifully, but it was impossible to do one's own hair in this style, unless you were an Orangutan!!.

My friend Avril used to secure her upswept hairstyle overnight by wrapping it lovingly with swathes of toilet paper.

We used to think hairstyles were complicated in the sixties, but these days hairstyles are even more elaborate with the advent of the hair extension. We girls had our hair braided in the Bahamas once, it was particularly uncomfortable, the beads were heavy and the littlest one ripped hers out on the car ride home!

Stylists in the Good Old Days come to mind, Roy and Raymond Brassington, Darryl McNeilage, Poppet and Petal, Merle and Pia.

2) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

BROTHER TURNER

It is with great sadness that the College records the passing away last night of Brother D. K. Turner, aged 84. A past Headmaster of CBC (1983-1984) Brother Turner devoted his latter years to the College's Night School for disadvantaged people, as well as supporting two peri-urban primary schools, at the Airport and Mthombothemba.

Brother Turner touched the lives of many people and his selfless dedication to his calling was an inspiration to all who knew him.
The members of the Board of Governors, the Headmaster, staff and all the CBC family offer their deepest sympathies to Brother Turner's family at this time. May his dear soul rest in peace.

Caryl Peatt

It's with deep sadness that I share the passing of our beloved Mom.
She passed away yesterday at 13:30 after a difficult fight in the cardiac ICU.
She was battling pneumonia and dangerously low potassium, and ultimately suffered a heart attack.
This all happened so fast and unexpectedly, our hearts are broken.

Mom was the strongest, most loving person we knew, and losing her feels unreal. Her love, warmth, and strength will stay with us forever.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out it means more than we can say.
We will share details about a memorial or service soon.

Rest peacefully, Mommy, we love you

RONNIE CHARSLEY

It is with great sadness to let all know who knew my dad Ronnie Charsley or 'Curly' as he was well known passed away peacefully on Monday 28 th July 2025.
Dad is now with his beloved Dot in heaven.
Curly was a member of the Matabeleland Turf Club and owned horses which he enjoyed for many years. He also enjoyed making his biltong which so many people loved.
Fly high Dad,
Grampa to Murray and Father in law to Lynn.
You will be missed by us all but you are at peace. Love you and glad I was with you till the end.
All my love Cooks.
Legacy is not one of numbers, but of meaning.
In the end, that's the rarest kind of victory.

GORDON MCDONALD

It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to a true legend of Falcon College Gordon McDonald. A devoted husband, father, educator and leader. Gordon devoted his life to serving falcon leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.

In Loving Memory of Alan Elliott
October 24, 1938 - August 1, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the Elliott family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Alan Elliott - a titan of conservation and a father of Zimbabwe's safari industry.

From founding Touch the Wild Safaris and the Presidential Elephants, Alan transformed how the world experiences Zimbabwe's wilderness. His legacy lives on through the thriving elephant herds he protected and the countless lives he inspired.

We are deeply moved by the messages from around the world celebrating his extraordinary life.
Your stories and tributes are a testament to the impact of his life's work.

THURSDAY 7 AUGUST AT 6.30 P.M. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released fifty years ago on 14 August 1975 when its initial reception was extremely negative; it soon became a hit and, fifty years on, is still on limited release, the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The film was a tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the 1960s and the story centres on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle, where they search for help. The castle is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes holding a party. They then meet the head of the house, Dr.Frank-N-Furter, an apparently mad scientist and alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky.

A string of hummable songs gives it momentum, Charles Gray's admirably straight-faced narrator holds it together, and a run on black lingerie takes care of almost everything else. [Time Out]
Love it or hate it, this is a trip you're likely never going to forget. [Apollo Guide]
For the most part it moves spiritedly along and the whole thing is a giant giggle. It's all so blatantly outrageous it can only be taken in the spirit of campy fun; this is one time a stage production has been enhanced by the film version. [Bay Area Reporter]
It's cheerful and silly, and kind of sweet.. [Chicago Sun-Times]
Admission: $3.00

THURSDAY 4 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME [BOND 10]
Bond's new mission is to find out how a Royal Navy Polaris submarine holding sixteen nuclear warheads simply disappeared while on patrol. Bond joins Major Anya Amasova and takes on a web-handed mastermind, known as Karl Stromberg, as well as his henchman Jaws, who has a mouthful of metal teeth. Bond must track down the location of the missing submarine before the warheads are fired.
The Spy Who Loved Me's sleek style, menacing villains, and sly wit make it the best of the Roger Moore era. [Rotten Tomatoes]
Barbara Bach proves to be an ideal Bond girl, attractive, smart, sexy, and dangerous. [Reelviews]
The Spy Who Loved Me is exceptional . Moore gives his best performance in the series and Bond and Anya Amasova are an appealing couple, equal in every way. The film is a real treat - a well acted, smartly cast, sexy, visually impressive, lavishly produced, powerfully directed mix of a spy romance and a war-mission film. [Guide for the Film Fanatic]
Admission: $3.00

FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. SHOSTAKOVICH AGAINST STALIN
Shostakovich Against Stalin is a documentary film that focuses on the period between 1936 and 1945 during which Shostakovich composed his Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Symphonies. It argues that Shostakovich was strongly opposed to the leadership of Josef Stalin and that he included anti-government messages in his compositions under the Soviet regime.
Several of Shostakovich's contemporaries are interviewed including an attendee of the Leningrad premiere of the Seventh Symphony during the Siege of Leningrad. Extensive archival footage from the Soviet era is combined with contemporary cinematography, and 'the editing together of music, image, and voice-over is often masterly'.
This is a remarkable film on the War Symphonies of Shostakovich & covers roughly the period 1936-1952. The most powerful & amazing feature of the film is its depiction of the terrifyingly fragile existence that Shostakovich led during this period; thinking that his every breath (& certainly every new piece of music) might be his last if Comrade Stalin disapproved (as he sometimes did). [IMDb]
There's considerable emotional power, as well as a piquant sense of irony. [Classical Net]
This film contains much valuable footage of the man himself and conveys an important part of the truth about his life and times with considerable visual and sonic verve. [letterboxd.com]
Admission: $3.00
