Living Next Door

Uh oh, it's 11 am and our new next door neighbours have turned on their massive air fryers and the delightful aroma of garlic, peri peri prawns and chicken is filling the air! Yum yum, how are we supposed to diet with that glorious smell wafting through the garden and into the house

For 45 years HeeHoo and I have lived in our little house in Suburbs. It has grown, improved, remoulded and shaped our lives. Yes, a suburb called 'Suburbs'!!

But as we are so close to the Bulawayo CBD we have now been zoned from residential to business living. All around us restaurants, cafes, hotels, accounting firms, banks et al have materialised, some using the beautiful existing old Cape Dutch styles, the colonial homes with pillars and wrap-around verandas, and some blossoming into modern glass and aluminium entities.

I have tried all sorts of ploys to keep HeeHoo's mind off the divine fragrance, by cooking strong smelling curries and spicy bobotie, to keep him away from scaling the wall, but an easier route would be to book our favourite permanent table in the corner!

'How lucky are we' I ask you with tears in my eyes We have the Mozambik Portuguese restaurant over the back wall, the Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant with Sweet and Sour Chicken on the same block across the road, and the Bowery Restaurant and Hotel two blocks away with that fabulous Shakshuka Breakfast!!. And then there is Costas just across the main road but thank goodness there is a Padel Court very close by where we can work off those extra kilos!! Hard to resist the temptations all around us.

To date we have resisted making a small door through the wall to the Mozambik, but the staff at the restaurant all say, giggling, that they will be quite happy to send takeaways over the wall!

Are you a learner at Alliance Francaise of Bulawayo Register for the international "Defi interalliances" competition, and stand a chance to win a trip to France!

Learners from all around the World will compete answering questions about French and Francophone culture, art, gastronomy, history, music and sport.

First step of the competition is here, in Bulawayo. The two best candidates will qualify for the online regional finale, with other students from Alliances Francaises located in South Africa, Zambia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi and Namibia. Then, the best candidate of Southern Africa will qualify for the Africa finale (online again), and the best African candidate will fly to Paris for the Grand Finale.

The fifth of April marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Robert Sibson Hall and the final stage in the momentous project to build the Zimbabwe Academy of Music. The construction of the north wing had begun in 1952 and the foundation stone was dedicated on 30 June 1953 though in fact that part of the building was by then complete. The south wing followed ten years later and Robert Sibson's vision was finally realised in 1974-75 when the two wings were united by the central block and the hall which was named after him.
We had intended to mark the event with a celebratory concert but the celebration has had to be postponed and will take place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May. Please make a note of the dates now - and raise a glass to Robert Sibson and the Academy on 5 April!

THURSDAY 3 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
In the first Python full-length film (released fifty years ago to the day!) Mikhail Baryshnikov defected to the west fifty years ago which seems as good a reason as any to show one of his most joyous creations! Choreographed by Baryshnikov after Petipa and Gorsky's original staging, this sparkling full-length production captures all the excitement, Spanish flair, and humour of Cervantes' masterpiece.

In the last of the series of films celebrating Dame Maggie Smith, once-popular opera diva Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) creates a stir with her arrival at Beecham House, a home for retired performers. No one feels the uproar more than Reginald (Tom Courtenay), Jean's ex-husband, who still stings from her long-ago infidelity. FRIDAY 11 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. VERDI: RIGOLETTO
Verdi's Rigoletto is, of course, the opera that features in Quartet so it seems sensible to show it the following evening! The opera was based on Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse and in a letter to his librettist, Piave, the composer describes it as 'the greatest drama of modern times'. He saw the character of Rigoletto as one worthy of Shakespeare, and from Verdi there was no greater compliment.
The traditional production comes from the Met and features Placido Domingo, Ileana Cotrubas and Cornell MacNeil in an outstanding performance which was highly enthusiastically received.
