OCD's rejoice!!

You Are Not Alone!

I walked into my doctor's office one day and out of habit straightened his filing basket on his desk. 'You have OCD' he told me sharply.
Now I have lived with that mortal sin for half a century and find it rather daunting - OCD of course stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Not to make mischief with folk who are genuinely struck down with this heartbreaking disorder, I find it fascinating to watch all my friends who have the same malaise albeit in a more mild manner!!

Take Teri for example - she is unable to walk into a room without straightening other people's pictures!!
Nix insists all her cans of food face the same way, all in orderly soldierlike lines!!
She Who Must Swim insisted, as a teenager, that her silver shoes must face each other in the cupboard.

I too have a fetish, I can walk into a house or an hotel, poke my finger quite unconsciously into a vase to see if the flowers have water!!

Now a toilet roll is a dead give away..Woe betide anyone who leaves the cardboard centre on the roll empty , even with one single sheet for good measure!! As for the correct way to hang toilet paper "There are two types of people in the world - those who hang the toilet paper over the top, and those who are wrong,"
The debate has ranged since 1891 and I know for a fact that
Aggie has, for years now, corrected the way the toilet paper hangs in her friends' bathrooms!

Hoarding is another symptom of OCD and how many of us are guilty of this fetish I dread the day I pass onto a better world and my daughters have to empty my cupboards. I have 'Look and Listen' magazines from the seventies, Eveline School magazines from the sixties, all the kids school reports from Junior and Senior Schools! Newspaper cuttings about HeeHoo when he was Chairman of this and CEO of that. Cuttings of when I was a 'famous' TV personality!! Farming records. (we lost our farm in 2002!!) Photos, photos and more photos, I started to digitalise them but it was taking so long with all the delightful memories!!

4) Notices and Events

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk

THURSDAY 27 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
Singin' in the Rain will hopefully still be appropriate when it's shown! It hardly needs any introduction though, curiously enough, was only a modest hit when it was first released. Today, of course, it is often regarded as the greatest musical film ever, in fact one of the greatest films ever made. And, with its stunning musical numbers, amazing dancing, excellent acting and an enjoyable plot to hold everything together, it surely deserves that reputation!
- To put it bluntly, this is one of the funniest films ever made. [MovieFreak]
- Singin' in the Rain is to me the Hollywood movie which has most nearly achieved perfection. [Los Angeles Free Press]
- Is Singin' in the Rain the finest movie musical of them all There are none better in my book. [The Times]
- The unstoppable joy of the musical numbers, especially with O'Connor, is what never fails to seduce - perhaps especially in Moses Supposes. [The Guardian]
- If you've never seen it and don't, you're bonkers. [Time Out]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film and Red Carpet members]

FRIDAY 28 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. CONCERT: BRADLEY DUBE, AKIN CHARIGA
Bradley and Akin are former or current Academy students whose previous performances will be remembered.
Bradley plays music by Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov including well-known pieces such as the Chopin Funeral March and Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights.
Accompanied by Tich Makalisa, Akin will sing a selection of well-known songs and arias.
This is the first in what is intended to be a monthly series of concerts covering all genres. Michael Brownlee Walker should be with us later in the year and we hope for a return visit from Klara Ana Rosa (violin), Milupi Imbuia (piano) and Amy Macy (cello) & Jeanette Micklem (piano) as well as a string quartet from Vienna, a return visit from the Phoenix Choir, a Belgian jazz duo, a choir evening and more!
Admission: $5.00 - no advance booking [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 6 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. MILITARY WIVES
With their partners away serving in Afghanistan, a group of women on the home front form a choir and quickly find themselves at the centre of a media sensation and global movement. Whilst celebrating the film's inspirational story of friendship, love, and support the film's director Peter Cattaneo says 'I first got involved with the Military Wives choir film three years ago and was immediately excited by a concept that would allow me to explore a way of life that has rarely been seen on the big screen, as well as make a film with music and singing at its core'..
A crowd-pleasing comedy-drama that hits all the right notes. [The Guardian]
- At a time when our world is drowning in uncertainty, Military Wives offers hope. It's the very definition of a feel-good movie. [Maltin's Movies]
- The smiles, tears and toe-tapping are all conducted with military precision, but they do all hit the right note. A classic crowd-pleaser. [Metro]
- Hugely engaging, enormously moving. [Daily Mail]
- Only the most hard-hearted viewer could resist getting swept up in what Cattaneo rightly calls a celebration of "the emotional power of music, and the catharsis of singing together". [Observer]
- A crowd-pleaser through and through, with enough moments of gravitas and tugging on the heartstrings to make it a well-rounded bit of entertainment. [Screen It!]
Admission: US$3.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 7 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. MUSIC BY MAURICE RAVEL
Maurice Ravel was born on 7 March 1875 and the programme includes both orchestral music from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and a one-act opera from Glyndebourne: La Valse: Poeme choreographique - Concerto for the Left Hand - Bolero - 'L'Enfant et les sortileges' ('The Child and the Spells').
- :Georges Pretre brings an especially energetic character to this French music to an obviously enthralled and appreciative Berlin audience who respond enthusiastically to the music. [Amazon]
- Strange choice for such a concert, the Ravel Left-hand - the bonus is that Leon Fleisher is playing it, and it's great to have him on film doing so. He is remarkably assured in a reading full of deft touches, both from him and Pretre, that comes off very well. [Classical Source]
- The production is very imaginative without being overwhelming, the singers do really good work singing and acting (and even dancing!) and the music is just magnificent, as would be expected from a genius like Ravel.
- Simon Rattle's conducting [of 'L'Enfant et les sortileges'] is beautifully paced, totally in command of the sometimes complex interaction between the stage and the pit, and drawing some ravishing sounds from the London Philharmonic. [Sunday Telegraph]
Admission: US$3.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAY 13 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. ERIN BROCKOVICH
Released twenty five years ago on 17 March 2000, Erin Brockovich stars Julia Roberts as a woman in a tight spot. Following a car accident in which Erin is not at fault, she pleads with her attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney) to hire her at his law firm where she stumbles upon some medical records placed in real estate files. She convinces Ed to allow her to investigate, where she discovers a cover-up involving contaminated water in a local community which is causing devastating illnesses among its residents.
- Get out and see this thing. Now. [Greenwich Village Gazette]
- A rousing, hugely entertaining movie. [Newsweek ]
- Smart, savvy, funny, and, at times, poignant. [Reel Views]
- Roberts has never been better as she glares and swears her way through the movie. [Associated Press]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film Carpet members]

FRIDAY 14 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. BIZET: CARMEN
Carmen was first performed a hundred and fifty years ago on 3 March 1875 - and its composer, George Bizet died only three months on later 3 June 1875 aged just 37. Sadly he never knew of its success as most reviews were critical, and the French public was generally indifferent. Carmen initially gained its reputation through a series of productions outside France, and was not revived in Paris until 1883.
With Anna Caterina Antonacci and Jonas Kaufmann bringing rare erotic intensity to the drama of Carmen and Don Jose, this Royal Opera production is a darkly passionate reading of one of the world's favourite operas. Under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano, Bizet's irresistible score drives the tragedy forward - powering a landmark staging of a musical masterpiece.
- The singing and conducting are knockouts. The doomed couple is great-looking, intense, young, and believable, and they create a great deal of heat just by gazing at one another [Classics Today]
- Anna Caterina Antonacci and Jonas Kaufmann are shattering as the leads with stage chemistry and acting making this, by far, the best Carmen on DVD. [Mostly Opera]
- This terrifically-cast and conducted Carmen goes to the top of the list, which is saying a great deal given the quality of the competition.. [Classics Today]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

8) Bulawayo News

My name is Anita Symington age 40 and looking for a place or centre where I can carry out voluntary work temporarily for 3 days in a week and for 3 weeks. My hours are as from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

I have visited and volunteered at Edith Duly Retirement Home and Ralstein Home and Ekuphumuleni Geriatric Nursing Home a few years ago and enjoyed my time and experience there.

Also I have visited and volunteered at Emthunzini Wethemba Children's Home and did some works of charity at John Smale Children's Home as well some time ago.

Now I want to get back to it but have no clue which place or places to visit.

Also if you do locate areas which are based far away or out of my town as I don't have my own personal transport I dont mind this too I hope the people whom will accept me may consider a pick and drop point within cbd area to make it easier for me to make my way back to my home.

I reside in Thorngrove suburb.

I appreciate your time and effort put into assisting me I truly hope to find an orphanage home for kids homeless or centre or old age home for the elderly and caring for sick people.

It is my specialty to offer my love time and care for and to such precious human lives.

Sincerely
Anita Symington
