WATCH DOG

My creative and enduring spirit is strong; nobody can take away my Rhodesianness and Zimbabweaness, even if they try to demean, repress, insult and hit.
I grew up to appreciate Earth and what I have, to fix things, to use my brain, to be a goat not a mute sheep.
R.C.

1) Editorial

RUNNERS, SMUGGLERS, TRANSPORTERS

It's got to be said, this sad, beautiful country of ours has treated its citizens so shabbily.
There are already all the problems we are so familiar with - disrepair, the closure of hundreds of companies, a failing health system, over taxation, destitution, illness, education demands, but of all of these, unemployment is possibly the most horrifying.

Zimbabweans have always been known for their fortitude, their resilience and their ability to 'make a plan' but every plan our people come up with, is met with harsh treatment.

Take the cross border traders, the runners, the smugglers, the transporters. Unable to find employment, even with a good education, they, like the informal traders, have had to 'make a plan'

Its a big business cross border trading.
Yes its illegal, its fraudulent, its denying hundreds of thousands of dollars from going into the taxman's pocket, but its being done because, there is nothing else!! No other way to make a living for families already living lives of quiet desperation.

Yes we are all guilty of it, smuggling is an accepted art in Zimbabwe. But it is being done because thousands of people have not other way to make a living. Christmas is always horrifying time at our countries borders. Thousands of our people working outside Zimbabwe, flood home to be with their families at this precious time. Countless hours are spent queuing like animals in the boiling hot sun, some paying bribes to get through faster, some standing silently, meekly, patiently, waiting to get through the chaos.

I know they drive us crazy, the cross border combis with trailers, laden to the sky, perilously dangerous, we hate them, we loathe them, but they too have their tale.

This Christmas has been particularly horrendous for countless men and women who have been trapped at the border, some for up to six weeks as our tax afficionados find more and more ways to extract from the populace, what, in all fairness, yes, is probably legally theirs.

But these runners, transporters, smugglers, have had to virtually camp at the border posts, subject to punishing new duties, living under conditions with very little sanitation, no food or water, days waiting in the baking sun, doing a job that they hate, and they are only forced to undergo this punitive way of seeking out a living, because their own country has let them down so very badly. And they have chosen this unlawful way to make a meagre living, to save their families from the reality of surviving exhausting, desperation-inducing poverty

The Bible says 'The meek shall inherit the earth', my heart breaks for the Meek.

BULAWAYO BALLET REVISITED

I went to Milton School in Bulawayo and Peggy Gower
lived diagonally behind our house in Hillcrest. At that time I can
recall my parents telling me that Molly Robinson ( her family were
friends of ours living in Suburbs) was a well-known Bulawayo dancer
who went to dance in Italy to feature in the Mario Lanza film :
" The Seven Hills of Rome " . As far as I can remember Molly then
stayed over in Italy and married an Italian accountant . Whether she
still carried on dancing I am not sure . Other Bulawayo dancers I
can recall were Margaret Donaldson and Jean Donaldson ( not
related ) but I do not know where they went from there.
Your story on dancing was most interesting Mags as are all your
other articles in Rhodesians Worldwide magazine.
Kind regards

Graham R.

RALPH LEWIS

Ralph Lewis passed away 27 January 2025 in Cape Town. Born in Bulawayo in 1936 his Father Dr. Max Lewis was a founder and Patron of Hartsfield Rugby Club. Ralph did many things in his life, raced cars, flew aeroplanes and in his 50's took up motorbike riding with lots of amusing stories including a fall which he tried to conceal from Gill, his beloved Late Wife. His daughter Gabrielle passed away at 32 from a rare disease and he is survived by David his son and Leigh daughter in law and 3 grandchildren. Ralph headed up the Monarch suitcase factory for many years in the 70', 80's and 90's. A generous and fun loving man he served on Rotary for many years in the 70's. We will all miss you old friend. Rest in Peace from all the people that came and went into your life. Your respect for The other Mother, Ester Dube is remarkable and she, like us, is very Sad.
Cheers Ralphie, Rest in Peace,
David Mouat And Christine Huni

RALPH LEWIS

Much respected neighbour of Rick and Maggie for 45 years.

Brenda Liddle

It is with broken hearts, that Gail Dalton, Mandy Grimbeck Pope and Louise Mc Donald advise our dear friends and family that our beloved mom, Brenda Liddle went to be with her maker this morning. Mom had a bad fall on the 18th of December, fracturing her femur, and never managed to recover.
Mom enjoyed life to the full, and was loved by her family and many friends around the world. We will miss her dearly.

ENAYAT SOHAILI

Our family is heartbroken to share the news that my darling dad passed away yesterday in the US, following health complications resulting from a stroke and an accumulation of other health challenges. None of us are sure how to navigate, or even imagine, a world without him in it, everything seems smaller and dimmer today, but I'm sure with time we'll be able to discover that difficult balance between holding on to memories while learning to let go of the pain and the loss. I was so grateful to get here in time to say goodbye, and for him and his darling Emil and Katya to have time to say goodbye too.
There were many special, quiet moments with the whole family around him and during one of them, probably his last conversation with us, he spoke about the love and compassion he felt all around him and his gratitude for his life, his family, his faith and his friends. And, of course, the greatest gratitude of all was reserved for his beloved Iran joon (dear, in Persian), his light and his heart and his life. Asking my mom to marry him, he'd always say, was the best decision he'd ever made in his life.
My dad lived in a number of places before he and my mom retired and settled in the US 12 years ago. He adapted like a pro, buying his first pair of blue jeans and lounge pants and learning to call a car boot a trunk. But his mind and his heart always came back to Zimbabwe, and even in those last days he spoke about it often. Katya and my dad always called each other sunshine and we all agree the world is very much darker today without him. We're only given a handful of years in this life; my dad got 97 and used every single one to its full. He was a man of faith and devotion, to his family and to his faith, and he never faltered in them.
We'll miss you with all our hearts, dad, but will keep your spirit, and the example you set, with us forever.

3) Congratulations

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk

The Academy has recently concluded a major sponsorship deal with Telco Zimbabwe who have been a leading performer in Zimbabwe's digital business for over 30 years.
The partnership will ultimately involve courses in digital music, digital graphics, digital sound engineering, film production and stage lighting, but the initial indications will be substantial repairs and maintenance including a new front fence, painting the building and work on the roof which the current rainy season has shown to be no longer watertight!
This is an exciting development for the Academy: not only will it result in necessary improvements but it will also give it a boost in terms of enrolment and raise its profile.

Strauss started work on the new score in the summer of 1898 but died a year later before it was complete. His friend Josef Bayer, director of the Vienna Court Ballet for thirty years, prepared a full score from Strauss's surviving material and the ballet was first seen in 1901. Recorded live in December 1999, this celebrated Vienna State Opera production combines everything a romantic ballet needs: excellent soloists, fascinating choreography and beautiful costumes. - A sumptuous feast of music and dance!
