HOW TO CURE THE HEAT BLUES

If you are feeling frazzled in this heat, go and watch a school cricket match!!

Our grandson from Botswana, played in his first 'Away Tournament' in Bryanston, over the weekend, and it made us forget all about the heat.

Oh yes, there was perspiration trickling down the back, there was sun beating down wherever you chose to sit, the bleachers were not designed for the elderly. The ice purchased at great expense melted extra quickly, but the spirit, the parent participation and the effort put into the game by the coaches, was incredible.

Not to mention the Under Nines themselves, resplendent in their brand new kit, oversized hats, trousers too long, (but cleverly designed to fit all sizes), shirts extra cool as fractionally on the generous side, their excitement was palpable, we watched our baby boy turn into an almost teenager overnight.

Their first night away from home, their enthusiasm for their War Cry (in Setswana!) their cricket bags almost as big as themselves, and no Moms and Dads, Grannies and Grandpas, allowed anywhere near them.
They were totally in their own nimbus, part of a squad, cohesive with their teammates, and doing pretty well too!!

From a small pool of cricket loving kids in Gaboronnes, facing teams from large communities, emerged a formidable team, talented bowlers, gifted batsmen, extraordinary fielders, but most importantly, embodied with a true team spirit, excellent manners, a commendable ethos, and boundless energy, even in the legendary Southern African heat!

Their coaches were extraordinary, Cubs Cricket Academy, Botswana, a force to be reckoned with!!

2) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Tyler Rowe

It is with great sadness we advise of the death of Tyler Dean Rowe.
A celebration of his life will be held at the River of Life, Greystone Park on Friday 13 December at 10.00 am.

Barry May

Very sad to advise that Barry May died in a Cape Town hospital on 31 November from a twisted bowel. He was in hospital for a knee operation which went well, so this was sad and very sudden for wife Mary while they were on their annual holiday. He died 30 days after celebrating his 80th birthday in Cape Town which included many video tributes to him from friends around the world.

Barry was a Rhodes Scholar, opened the batting for PE 1st X1, captained Oxford and played fullback in the final few matches of our unbeaten PE 1961 Tigers.

A good life well lived by a true gentleman.

Margaret Lewis

Margaret Lewis passed away peacefully in her sleep last week. She leaves her only child, Allan, with whom she was living the past few years out at Umguza.

There was a private memorial service on Kloof Farm at 11 am on Saturday, 7th December.

Doctor Willie Legg

It is with great sadness we advise of the passing of Doctor William Legg. A great philanthropist and a genuinely caring man.

3) Congratulations

4) Notices and Events

EVENTS

Island Hospice and Healthcare Bulawayo Branch wish to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Bulawayo community for the outstanding support of our Light a Light for Hospice memorial and carols by candlelight event held on Friday 22nd November.

There was a wonderfully festive atmosphere as all the challenges of the year were forgotten as people united in singing along to the carols and enjoying early Christmas shopping with the stalls.

Our event would not have been possible without the support of the following:

For free use of their venue since 2012 Management of A P Glendinning represented by Mr Malcolm MacDonald have hosted the event since its inception in 2012. Because of you Zonki is the home of Light a Light and each end of year we happily come home.
Thank you to the Complex Management and Staff represented by Mr Marnie Delport not forgetting Ben and his amazing Security team for keeping the venue safe and the car park secure.
For the wonderful singing ALWAYS
Mrs Delport and the Girls College Choir. Mrs Delport continues to instilled in her young ladies not only a love of music and singing but how to use their musical talents to give back to society.
This year a very special thank you to the school Head, Mrs Ross for allowing the entire Girls College (YES!!! The WHOLE school came) to participate.
Big thank you to Juan Beukes for handling of the sound system.
Not forgetting our MC for the night Brighton Mlilo who is a new addition to the Hospice volunteer family but not new to his art. Thank you Brighton - we look forward to working more with you in the new year.
For organising the stalls One of our volunteers, Kalpa Kara took on this task with ease. She was supported by Tristan Bent who marked out the stalls and Tanya Maguire who assisted on the night. Thanks also to the stall holders for their amazing support and for adding extra fun and flare to that event.
For the loan of chairs Thank you to the Rock Church for assisting us with audience chairs on the eleventh hour. (We sincerely apologise for there being insufficient chairs but we truly had not anticipated such a huge turn out) Thank you also to Mr Mujuru and his team from Imbizo farm for transporting the chairs to and from the venue.
For the beautiful banner Thank you to Maureen Youngman for organising the banner and Gary James at Sanford signs for quick working making it up. Maureen has been organising the stalls almost every year since Light a light began and, though unable to do so this year due to prior engagement, still went the extra mile to assist with getting a banner made up and put up.

For Sale of mementos Les and Ash and the staff of LNA Stationers. This amazing team of ladies (and gents) have assisted us EVERY year since 2012 to sell our Lights. We hit a record this year with an amazing 76 memorial lights sold! Thank you seems so inadequate. We are very grateful.

Last but not least thank you to Janice Bent, a volunteer at Island, who makes time every year to design and make up the memorial lights. Not only this but every year she puts together the event liaising with the complex, the choir, the MC, the stall holders..all the behind the scenes work to make the event a resounding success.

In closing, to the amazing people of Bulawayo - because of your support organisations such as Island exist and because of Island no one need die in pain or alone.
Till next November thank you and God Bless.

THURSDAY 12 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE GODFATHER, PART II
The compelling successor to The Godfather, was released exactly fifty years ago on 12 December 1974. Contrasting the life of Corleone father and son, it traces the problems of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in 1958 and of his father, the young immigrant Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro), in 1917. Vito Corleone becomes one of the most respected mafia dons of New York, Michael attempts to expand his business empire into Las Vegas, Florida and pre-revolution Cuba but faces personal problems trying to keep his collapsing marriage and relationship with his brother intact.
- Francis Coppola's breathtakingly ambitious prequel-sequel to his first Godfather movie is as gripping as ever. It is even better than the first film, and has the greatest single final scene in Hollywood history, a real coup de cinema. [The Guardian]
- Drawing on strong performances by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola's continuation of Mario Puzo's Mafia saga set new standards for sequels that have yet to be matched or broken. [The Times]
- Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II is an even richer, more spellbinding work than its wholly successful predecessor. [Detroit Free Press]
- One of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed American films, a landmark work from one of Hollywood's top cinema eras. [Chicago Tribune]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 13 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MEET ME IN ST.LOUIS
Meet Me in St. Louis was released eighty years ago in time for Christmas 1944 and the plot of hinges on the possibility that the Smith family's banker father, Alonzo (Leon Ames), might uproot the Smiths to New York, scuttling the romance between his daughter Esther (Judy Garland) and boy-next-door John Truett (Tom Drake), and causing similar emotional trauma for the rest of the household. The songs are a heady combination of period tunes and newly minted numbers, the best of which are The Boy Next Door, The Trolley Song and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
- Judy Garland has never been more spirited or more poignant. [Observer, 18 December 2011]
- An unmissable big-screen experience. [Guardian, 15 December 2011]
- One of the great musicals. [Time Out, 24 June 2006]
- Combining some wonderful song and dance routines with a cast of memorable characters, Meet Me in St.Louis is certainly one the best Hollywood musicals ever. [BBC.com, 17 February 2002]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film and Red Carpet Members

THURSDAY 19 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. CINDERELLA
After her father unexpectedly dies, young Ella (Lily James) finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and stepsisters, who reduce her to scullery maid, but, despite her circumstances, she refuses to despair. An invitation to a palace ball gives Ella hope that she might reunite with the dashing stranger (Richard Madden) she met in the woods, but her stepmother prevents her from going. Help arrives in the form of a kindly beggar woman who has a magic touch for ordinary things..
- The story is as enchanting as ever, the handsome cast doesn't miss a beat, while the costumes and set design are wonders to behold. [Daily Mirror]
- Kenneth Branagh's remake of this much-loved Disney classic is a sumptuous, magical delight. [The Sun]
- Chris Weitz's screenplay updates the old Charles Perrault yarn in a fresh and witty way. The performances are very lively too. [Independent]
- Refreshingly traditional in a revisionist era, Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella proves Disney hasn't lost any of its old-fashioned magic. [Rotten Tomatoes]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 20 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MASSENET: CENDRILLON
Massenet's Cendrillon was first performed at the Opera-Comique in Paris in 1899 and its gorgeous score embraces pathos, pastiche, broad humour, subtle eroticism and sheer magic. Neglected for much of the 20th century, this entrancing and often surprising opera has found a firmer place in the repertoire over the past 30 years and, with Joyce DiDonato as Cinderella capturing all hearts - not just Prince Charming's! - Massenet's enchanting, sophisticated retelling of the classic fairy tale comes in a charming and witty production by Laurent Pelly from Covent Garden.
- Bravo to the cast and crew of Cendrillon from the Royal Opera House production! Joyce DiDonato is absolutely wonderful, charming and shows her dramatic artistry when singing the beautiful arias. Her vocal performance left me breathless. [Amazon]
- Joyce DiDonato brings star quality to the title-role, touching the heart and, as the Prince, we have Alice Coote in simply stunning form, pouring out a stream of molten mezzo ardour. [Gramophone]
- Laurent Pelly's suitably magical production from Covent Garden fields two of today's greatest lyric mezzos in the lead roles: Joyce DiDonato is the wide-eyed heroine and trouser-role specialist par excellence Alice Coote all brooding intensity as her Prince Charming. Special mention for the indomitable Polish contralto Ewa Podles as the Wicked Stepmother. [Presto Music]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members
