THE DEATH OF THE FROCK

HeeHoo and I were at the airport last week, when HeeHoo, who is not usually known to comment on female apparel, said 'You know you are the only person in this whole airport wearing a dress!'
Looking around and I was amazed as he was quite correct. Jeans, slax, gym gear, ski pants, trousers, call it what you will were the order of the day on every single man and woman in that airport. Not a frock to be seen anywhere......

What is a frock Well it could be called a dress, a pinny, a girtle or a hundred other things -my staple 'go to' as a young girl.

My Mom used to make all my dresses and they were always beautiful; those were the days when we had nipped waists and full skirts! There was a tailor at Sanders who made immaculately tailored belts and covered buttons covered in the same fabric as the 'frock'!

Sigh - those were the days of elegance and grace, but now sadly no more the long opera gloves, no more hats to weddings and funerals, nobody wears wasp-waist wool dresses or beautiful evening gowns unless it's a very special occasion. Profound cultural changes have emerged into the twentieth century and casual is the only way to dress these days.

Buyers in clothing stores now concentrate on ski pants, leggings, athletic apparel, fitness gear, plus any design of workout top. Most flattering and sneaky as one can go anywhere in workout gear, the shops, the school play, and it looks like you have spent the morning in the gym, only no sweatage!!
I personally own over a dozen pairs of sweatpants, cool, stretchy, in an assortment of colours and I am horrified to see the wide leg trousers making a comeback!!

The same applies to shoes! It might just be my age but the elegant heeled shoes, the Louis heels, platforms, stilettos, dress shoes are all a thing of the past. Nowadays one prefers sneakers, track shoes, takkies! Call it what you will the gym shoes section of any shoe store far outweighs the fancy shoe selection. HeeHoo's absolute favourites have gone from his formal black or brown lace up brogues, to his favourite Skechers, which come in an array of amazing colours and most importantly, one can just slip ones foot into them without the back of the shoe collapsing, and no laces required!!
Ideal for the Bulawayo airport where archaically, one still has to remove one's shoes to pass through the x ray machine!!

2) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved and much respected mother, grandmother and GG Audrey Ballantyne at 97 on 27th Nov 2024. She has been a true Matriarch and an inspiration to us all. Will be extremely missed by Les, Pat, Scott, Cole, Min, Kylie, Joel, Mylo and Lockie.

EVENTS
BULAWAYO HELP NETWORK TRUST APPEAL

Bulawayo Help Network Trust (BHNT) has been operating in Bulawayo for 20 years.
We support over 500 pensioners in retirement and private homes and if we include the high density community with a feeding scheme and an orphan educational program, we support over 600. We are a relational charity and know every one of our beneficiaries.
We assess each person and only when we are sure all other means of support have been exhausted, do we step in.
We are concerned about the well being of people residing in retirement complexes. Our staff focus on this, and we and have regular Creative Therapy Sessions in most of the homes.

In order for our charity to be sustainable and become a community project we have been encouraging business donors to commit to a monthly donation for which we are able to provide tax deductibility.

THURSDAY 5 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
The second in the series of films celebrating Dame Maggie Smith. A star-studded cast of British retirees (Judi Dench, Celia Imrie, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup, Tom Wilkinson) decide to outsource their retirement to exotic -- and less expensive -- India. Lured by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and imagining a life of leisure in lush surroundings, they arrive and find that the Marigold is actually a shell of its former self..
- A charming, funny and heart-warming movie ... a smoothly crafted entertainment that makes good use of seven superb veterans. [Chicago Sun-Times]
- A hilarious and touching comedy about growing old disgracefully. [ Liverpool Echo
- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a true example of an ensemble piece where a group of veteran actors show that they are just as good as they ever were. [We Got This Covered]
- A refreshing, mature fairy tale with a top-notch ensemble cast. [USA Today]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

Having performed at numerous festivals and jazz clubs worldwide, he has returned home and will be performing in Bulawayo for the first time since his schooldays!
Christine Nyoni, the Academy's vocal teacher, hails from Kenya and is a very experienced performer who has appeared several times at the Academy as well as in Kenya. Her versatility is her strength and she is comfortable singing a variety of genres. Tich and Christine will be backed by Misheck Ngorima on bass and Erastus Nleya on drums to form a quartet.

THURSDAY 12 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE GODFATHER, PART II
The compelling successor to The Godfather, was released exactly fifty years ago on 12 December 1974. Contrasting the life of Corleone father and son, it traces the problems of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in 1958 and of his father, the young immigrant Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro), in 1917. Vito Corleone becomes one of the most respected mafia dons of New York, Michael attempts to expand his business empire into Las Vegas, Florida and pre-revolution Cuba but faces personal problems trying to keep his collapsing marriage and relationship with his brother intact.
- Francis Coppola's breathtakingly ambitious prequel-sequel to his first Godfather movie is as gripping as ever. It is even better than the first film, and has the greatest single final scene in Hollywood history, a real coup de cinema. [The Guardian]
- Drawing on strong performances by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola's continuation of Mario Puzo's Mafia saga set new standards for sequels that have yet to be matched or broken. [The Times]
- Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II is an even richer, more spellbinding work than its wholly successful predecessor. [Detroit Free Press]
- One of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed American films, a landmark work from one of Hollywood's top cinema eras. [Chicago Tribune]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 13 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MEET ME IN ST.LOUIS
Meet Me in St. Louis was released eighty years ago in time for Christmas 1944 and the plot of hinges on the possibility that the Smith family's banker father, Alonzo (Leon Ames), might uproot the Smiths to New York, scuttling the romance between his daughter Esther (Judy Garland) and boy-next-door John Truett (Tom Drake), and causing similar emotional trauma for the rest of the household. The songs are a heady combination of period tunes and newly minted numbers, the best of which are The Boy Next Door, The Trolley Song and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
- Judy Garland has never been more spirited or more poignant. [Observer, 18 December 2011]
- An unmissable big-screen experience. [Guardian, 15 December 2011]
- One of the great musicals. [Time Out, 24 June 2006]
- Combining some wonderful song and dance routines with a cast of memorable characters, Meet Me in St.Louis is certainly one the best Hollywood musicals ever. [BBC.com, 17 February 2002]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film and Red Carpet Members
