CURSIVE WRITING

Cursive seems to be on its way out. Growing numbers of schools worldwide have cut cursive instruction from their curriculums to make space for new skills that can help us flourish in the 21st century. But are we being rash by throwing out a handwriting style that is anything but purely decorative

As cursive disappears from schools, many parents are teaching their children this handwriting style at home, convinced that it has strong historical, cognitive, therapeutic, and aesthetic advantages. Cursive might come with benefits, but can it help give kids an edge in our digital world

After all Cursive Writing Is Faster Than Printing and one of the big reasons cursive is attractive is that it can save time.
With cursive, letters are connected, cutting down the times you need to lift your pen. Depending on how much you write, the seconds you save by raising your pen less frequently can increase your writing efficiency compared with when you're writing in print.
Also writing in cursive is believed to boost your brain.
Research shows that when you write down information you hear, you're more likely to remember the information than if you'd typed it. When you listen and write by hand, it triggers brain activity that strengthens your memory.

Writing by hand might also improve thinking skills like reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving.
Plus, when you write by hand (not type), you're more likely to paraphrase and summarise information, listening attentively for the key bits.
It also improves fine motor skills. When you're buttoning your clothes, brushing your teeth, whisking eggs, or, yes, writing, you're using your fine motor skills. Fine motor skills encourage your eyes and muscles in your hands and fingers to work together to complete precise tasks.

Writing cursive gives your fine motor skills a good workout. Cursive develops hand-eye coordination while also building hand muscles, making it a great pick for fine-tuning your fine motor skills!

When anyone claims that cursive is the dinosaur of written communication, you're sure to hear a cursive supporter retort, 'What about signatures '
Signatures are, as a rule, written in cursive, and all legally binding documents do need a signature. Cursive makes signatures unique and gives them an impressive quality, unlike other writing styles.

Actually, it's generally not a legal requirement that handwritten signatures (or wet signatures) be cursive either. Printing your name is an official option for marking your consent, whether you do so electronically or with a pen.
With tech shaking up how we do almost everything in our day-to-day lives, who knows how we'll authorise documents in the future

However not everyone's cursive is beautifully formed and a pleasure to read. (Take HeeHoo as an example!)
Cursive can be less legible than print when written carelessly or in a rush. Some particularly messy cursive scrawls can't even be read by their writers!

The pros and cons show there are good reasons to keep cursive around, and there are also valid reasons to let it become a relic from a time when modern tech hadn't taken over.

ZIMBABWE PENSIONERS SUPPORT FUND

We are busy packing our boxes for our pensioners and the rain as welcome as it is seems to be a bit of a problem as our warehouse is still leaking. We need pallets to pack the boxes onto because of the water. We are packing for 1200 pensioners. Please, if anyone has any extra pallets they are willing to donate and drop off at our warehouse that would help us a ton.

ZIMBABWE PENSIONERS

We desperately need secure storage & packing space in Bulawayo to keep doing what we are doing (1300m2) . Our current space which we have used for 10 years free of charge is coming to an end. We are currently supporting just over 1050 destitute pensioners in 26 homes / organizations throughout Zimbabwe and have been doing this for almost 23 years.

For most of them we are a lifeline that they cannot survive without. We have been quoted an average of $3.00 a m2. This comes to about $6000 USD a month. It is just not financially viable to spend this amount of money a month on anything other than the desperately needed food aid. With all the large empty properties around Bulawayo there must be somebody who can assist us.

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC

THURSDAY 14 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. FOXCATCHER
When wealthy John du Pont (Steve Carell) invites Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) to move to his estate and help form a wrestling team for the 1988 Olympics, Mark sees a way to step out of the shadow of his charismatic brother, Dave (Mark Ruffalo). However, du Pont begins to lead Mark down a dark road, causing the athlete's self-esteem to slip, and he also becomes fixated on bringing Dave into the fold, eventually propelling all three toward an unforeseen tragedy.
- It is tautly directed, deftly written, thoroughly gripping and offers psychological heft as well as sublime performances all round. [The Spectator]
- Foxcatcher, with its layered performances and emotionally precise storytelling, is a riveting drama that leaves you spellbound and more than a little shaken [Aisle Seat]
- A wonderfully taut and thoughtfully unnerving drama. [Screen International]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER AT 5.00 P.M. STUDENT CONCERT
The Academy's end-of-term concert, featuring a wide range of students as well as guests.
Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER AT 7.00 P.M. ANTON BRUCKNER: THE MAKING OF A GIANT .
Under-estimated by his contemporaries, but today acclaimed as one of the greatest and most imaginative composers of his time, Anton Bruckner was born 200 years ago on 4 September 1824 This documentary explodes many of the myths and prejudices cultivated by the composer's detractors during his life time and subsequently. The story is told by those who have intimate knowledge of Anton Bruckner and his work including such great conductors as Kent Nagano, Valery Gergiev and Simon Rattle. We visit his birthplace, hear about his teaching assignments, his triumphs as organist in France and England, his relationship with Wagner and the difficult times in Vienna, where he spent the latter part of his life.
The documentary will be followed by a performance of Bruckner's Te Deum conducted by Herbert von Karajan.
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAY 21 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MANSFIELD PARK
Poor relation Fanny Price (Billie Piper) is sent at the age of ten to live on rich, prestigious Sir Thomas's grand estate, Mansfield Park. Raised almost as one of his own children, she becomes everyone's favourite, bonding especially with sensitive Edmund Bertram, who aspires to a virtuous vicarage rather than gain or glory. The family feels betrayed when Fanny refuses a proposal from even wealthier neighbour Henry Crawford. But even more strenuous times are ahead, with surprising results.
- The scenery breath-taking, the acting fantastic, the characters well portrayed but with added passion. [IMDb]
- If you didn't mind your Austen both mucked about with and a little bit mucky, then it was all good fun. [The Guardian]
- A heart-warming and delightfully silly film. Billie Piper does it complete justice with her convincing portrayal of the little girl sent away from her home. [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. PUCCINI: TURANDOT

Turandot is Puccini's last opera, left unfinished at his death a hundred years ago on 29 November 1924. In legendary China, the Princess Turandot has sworn no man shall marry her unless he can correctly answer three riddles. Prince Calaf, who has fallen for Turandot, solves the riddles, but wants to set the Princess her own challenge. The power and beauty of Turandot's music gives the orchestra and chorus every opportunity to shine and it also includes the very well-known Act III tenor aria 'Nessun Dorma'.
The opera was completed from Puccini's sketches by Franco Alfano for the first performance but other attempts have been made and this performance from La Scala, Milan, utilises the one by Luciano Berio, commissioned by Puccini's publishers Ricordi in 2001. The evening will also include the usual Alfano completion in a performance from the Royal Opera House!
- A firm recommendation for this eminently watchable offering from the theatre of the opera's premiere. [Gramophone]
- Besides some great acting in Act 3, Stemme sings this role really well. The voice is powerful and true and actually sounds quite beautiful, which I'm not accustomed to hear in Turandot. [John's Opera Ramblings]
- Visually this is a gripping production which captures the drama of this opera perfectly. It's downright exciting! [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

"Stringed Moments" with Barbs

Thurday 21st November - 5pm - free entrance, wine offered

The Stringed Moments project is inspired by the lived experiences of Barbs, which range from surviving cervical cancer, endometriosis, a hysterectomy, a divorce, abuse, cardiac arrests and even living with an autoimmune disease. Each challenge came with its own set of lessons, but she's continually seen the power that comes with redefining and rebuilding your identity on your own terms. She has made it her life work to create space for this transformation for those searching for a better way to be, and Stringed Moments is a manifestation of that purpose.

Bold Dialogue is an intuitive wellness platform that facilitates healing, ignites hope and brings the possibility of boldly living a life that honours your passions and dreams. "We work with women across Africa, equipping them with the support, mentorship and tools required to transcend trauma in order to truly operate from a place of excellence" states Barbs.

"We are going to use letters written to various people who had a hand in traumatising the writer to invoke healing conversations with the crowd. We also hope to bring emotional catharsis to the listeners. This series of letters is called Stringed Moments".

"The Words Matter Show, a poetry event currated by SoxThePoet"

Friday 29th November - 5pm, free entrance, wine offered

The Words Matter Show is a free-expression platform that aims to harness the power of words to break down communication barriers and foster understanding. It focuses on poetry and spoken word, as these mediums allow for deep exploration and expression of thoughts, emotions, and personal experiences.

Performances will be conducted by WeCre8te Afrika before a 1 hour open mic.

SoxThePoet, the currator of this event, is a spoken word artist from Zimbabwe.

Art statement : "My poetry is limitless. It is a tribute to power. I know what it means to be powerless, to be uncertain every waking day, to want, to hope, to fear, to not belong, to be in pain and to feel lost, it took me a long time to learn that I have always had the power to free myself and be who I was meant to be. As I have learnt of my own power my poetry is here to connect you to yours. My poetry is meant to help you understand the world better, What you do with that understanding is entirely up to you".

"My work touches on themes around social, economic and political life and has the aim to bring a progressive realization of power to my audience. In the past, I have been nominated for the Bulawayo Arts Awards, a national slam champion, listed under the 40 under 30 Gumiguru Influential Leaders List, and performed in Festivals in and around Zimbabwe with the most recent being the Phenomenal Festival of Lights. I am also a radio host at Skyz Metro FM for the Men's Emotional and Mental Wellness show".

I have just posted a message on a blog from 14 years ago, hoping to be able to contact Rosemary Williams after many years.

I was aware that she had moved to Melbourne but never had any contact details.

Would you be able to inform of my email

I have plenty of family data to confirm that l am genuinely interested in contacting her again.
