NOTHING TO CROW ABOUT

Is the crow menace in Bulawayo getting worse, will Alfred Hitchcock have the last laugh?
Well it's not only in Zimbabwe that the crows are taking charge, seems like the entire African continent is at risk!! And they are blaming the Brits again!!
An "airborne black tide mark" is menacing the native bird life of East Africa, according to ornithologists. The common crow is using its natural cunning to squeeze indigenous species off the centre stage. It stands accused of killing local birds in Tanzania - such as the paradise flycatcher - causing their numbers to nose-dive.

At last count there were an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 crows in Tanzania's capital, Dar es Salaam, and efforts to control them have been short-lived.
The crow arrived in East Africa in 1891, when the British governor of Zanzibar ordered their import from India. He hoped to harness their scavenging tendencies to combat the litter problem in Zanzibar's streets. Pandora's Box was opened and the crow population spread, grew and flourished. Now their hunched Hitchcockian figures can be seen in their thousands around East Africa's cities.

"The crow is not just interested in food scraps" said Fiona Reid, author of Birds of Dar es Salaam. "It also attacks and kills indigenous birds to eat, or to get to, their eggs. They have even been known to attack sick animals like goats or domestic pets".
Crows are amongst the most intelligent birds and their hunting skills are finely tuned, according to Ms Reid. "Crows often work as a team. One will chase a bird away from its nest by swooping aggressively at it, leaving the way open for the second bird to steal the egg," she said. This entrepreneurial flare is taking its toll on the indigenous bird life of East Africa, driving many species from their natural habitats. "The effect on indigenous birds has been drastic, Numerous species, such as the African paradise flycatcher and many sunbirds, have virtually disappeared from Dar es Salaam gardens."

The situation is worsening rapidly. Crows are working their way further inland, feeding off the rubbish that East Africa's growing human population is producing.
Sadly, the history of crow control is not as remarkable as the history of crow expansion. In Tanzania there have been a number of small-scale attempts to cut their numbers, but the initiatives have not been maintained.
But it's not only crows that abound worldwide, now a warning from Birdlife Zimbabwe - the Indian Mynah is slowly but surely working its way up from Southern Africa.

The Common Myna Acridotheres tristis, previously known as the Indian Myna, is an invasive avian species currently spreading widely across Zimbabwe. Mynas are smart and gregarious starlings that originate from the Indian subcontinent. In Africa, the species was first introduced in Durban, South Africa, in the late 1800s and has invaded much of South Africa since then. Over the past decade, it has travelled north into Zimbabwe and the number of sightings has steadily increased. Today, in major cities like Harare and Bulawayo, there is concern at the rate at which the Myna population seems to be growing.

Roosts of hundreds of Mynas have been identified. Research is necessary to verify whether the perception that they aggressively take over nests belonging to other indigenous bird species with similar breeding habits actually occurs.

The Matabeleland Youth Conservation Society, an affiliate of BirdLife Zimbabwe, has undertaken to conduct research on this species. A means of consolidating sightings to answer a few questions about the range expansion of this species in Zimbabwe has been set up.

A cause has been set up on the BirdLasser application (which collects data for the Southern African Bird Atlassing Project 2). In order to participate, Atlassers are asked to access the Causes menu and consent to sharing their atlassing and birding trip cards with the Myna monitoring project. When logging sightings, please spare a few minutes to fill out as much information on the sighting as you can. Please log the number of individuals, location descriptions, activity and other species around and notable interactions with them if there are any. For any questions on the study, please email: Merlyn Nkomo at: merynomsa@gmail.com

OCTOBER CLOSURE
The ZANU PF conference takes place at the Trade Fair grounds from 22 to 27 October 2024. There will be several thousand delegates and the President will be in attendance so access to the Academy will be extremely difficult, if not impossible. It has therefore been decided that there will be no teaching, DVDs or other events during that week and that the Academy offices will be closed.
Make-up lessons will be arranged so that the full quota will be taught before the end of the school term on 5 December.
We regret any inconvenience but believe it is sensible to make these arrangements now.

THURSDAYS 26 SEPTEMBER, 6, 13 & 20 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE TUNNEL
Inside the Channel Tunnel, on the borderline between Britain and France, the body of a female French politician is discovered. As the corpse is removed it, becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder and detectives Karl Roebuck (Stephen Dillane) and Elise Wassermann (by Clemence Poesy) are forced into an uneasy partnership as they seek out a politically-motivated serial killer who draws them into his own personal agenda.
- Terrific murder mystery. Great character development and acting. The story keeps you on edge. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- The Tunnel was more than the sum of its parts; a show that could easily have gone badly wrong but ended up wonderfully right. It was TV gold. [The Guardian]
- It is all very effectively done, creepily atmospheric and splendidly gruesome, but the best thing about the series is the interplay between Stephen Dillane's easy-going, laddish, rosbif detective inspector and his po-faced, glacial but - wouldn't you know it - extremely sexy Gallic counterpart. [The Stage]
Admission: US$2.50 or $8.00 the series [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 27 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE RIVERDANCE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW
Riverdance is a worldwide phenomenon and this is the biggest and best version of Riverdance ever. The original show is enhanced with a terrific young cast, more dancers, a new score, a bigger stage and set, background video screens and new innovations, filmed as never before by multi-award winning director Chris Hunt.
- Magical, moving and utterly memorable *****. [The Arts Review ]
- Entertainment doesn't come much better than this. [The Irish Examiner]
- Dance does not often get so good. [The Guardian]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. STARSTRUCK & ELITE SYNCOPATIONS
One of the first choreographers to bring the 'American style' to Europe, the legendary Gene Kelly was invited to create an original work for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1960. Dancing the lead role of Aphrodite was the 'Etoile' of Paris, Claude Bessy, who had worked with Kelly in Hollywood and encouraged him across the Atlantic. His jazzy, joyful Pas de Dieux (sic!) was highly acclaimed at the time as 'a breath of fresh air' and has now been given a new set of wings for its UK premiere. In collaboration with Kelly's widow, Patricia Ward Kelly, Scottish Ballet's Artistic Director Christopher Hampson has lovingly revived the original ballet and added a delightful new twist. 'You'll be transported into the world where jazz meets ballet and the stars align!'
Also in the programme will be the Royal Ballet's Elite Syncopations, choreographed by Kenneth Macmillan and described as 'having an up-beat, hip- swinging aura of spontaneity, with easy-going rhythms'.
- There have been few shows where I have come out and wished I could go back in and watch it all over again. This was one of them! [Edinburgh Music Review]
- If Starstruck was Gene Kelly's love letter to ballet, then this revival is Scottish Ballet's love letter to Gene Kelly. It simply oozes style, glamour - and more than a dash of the golden era of Hollywood - as ballet and jazz meet to make magic. [The press and Journal]
- Elite Syncopations is a short, featherweight confection that continues to delight audiences. This production is pure eye candy: The choreography is alert to the rhythmic essence of the musical sources and there are many humorous elements. MacMillan is not above a cheap laugh, as in 'The Alaskan Rag' which pairs a very tall ballerina with a much shorter male dancer, whose enthusiasm makes up for his (intentional) terpsichorean shortcomings! [Fanfare]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

FRIDAY 11 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. A CELEBRATION OF CLASSIC MGM MUSICALS FROM THE PROMS
MGM was founded on 17 April 1924 and the first of two hundred musicals, The Broadway Melody, followed five years later. Performing at the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, John Wilson and his orchestra celebrate MGM film musicals, beginning with Johnny Green's MGM Jubilee Overture, written for MGM's thirtieth anniversary back in 1954. The concert was 'an amazing, wonderful, feelgood trip through the nostalgia of music of a quality that just isn't produced any more'. The singers were Kim Crisswell, Sarah Fox, Curtis Stigers, Seth Macfarlane and Sir Thomas Allen and the programme included songs from such great musical movies as Gigi, High Society, Meet Me in St Louis, Seven Brides for Seven Brother, Singin' in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz and more.
- So 6 stars (if possible) for John Wilson (the Sir Simon Rattle of Popular and Light Music); 5 stars for the chorus and orchestra (that rather lovely fair-haired violinist on the second row who smiles a lot, as well she might, the harpist with the fabulous moustache, overall surely the greatest Big Band ever assembled); the songs themselves (mostly wonderful); the arrangements (fabulous). [Amazon]
- At its best, the lushness of the sound from the John Wilson Orchestra, the two harps like angels' wings and the promenaders who opened their umbrellas for Singin' in the Rain made this the musical equivalent of having hot, melted butter poured all over you. It was impossible to feel anything but happiness. [The Guardian]
- Though rain poured for the entire day, inside the Royal Albert Hall Californian sunshine, and that 'feel-good' factor, was omnipresent. The MGM Studio Orchestra that performed the original arrangements was superbly mimicked by John Wilson's hand-picked players; rhythms are tightly performed and the sound is a blend of Palm Court and Swing. [Classical Source]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. BERNSTEIN CONDUCTS: IVES AND GERSHWIN
Charles Ives was born on 20 October 1874 and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was first performed on 12 February 1924. Leonard Bernstein conducts and plays Rhapsody in Blue as well as An American in Paris. The programme also includes Charles Ives' Second Symphony and The Unanswered Question.
- It is a wonderfully compelling performance, one which will be loved immediately by those who like to hear performances of this piece 'over the top' in emotional warmth. [Gramophone]
- THRILLING - BUY IT - IT'LL ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF. Bernstein's love of the music pours out of his hands. [Amazon]
- Bernstein blossoms, producing a thrilling and sturdy performance that makes a strong case for this rather strange symphonic montage (Ives' Second symphony). [BBC Music Magazine]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]
