TRAVELLING WITH TINY TOTS

Now don't get me wrong, I am absolutely in favour of car seats for babies and toddlers. But having recently undertaken a lengthy car journey with a Tiny Person in a very constraining car seat, I mused at length on my own children's travels in the dark ages, when car seats were not obligatory.

Dad would pile the kids and various friends into the back of the car with toys and books, and off we would go. There in the back seat we would read, play maths games which helped everyone extensively, play 'I Spy', 'Hinky Pinky', 'Cricket', License Plate Numbers' , Tic, tac Toe, 'Hic, Hac, Hoc', 'Twenty Questions' and 'I'm Going on a Picnic'.....
There were no devices !!

We would also pack the faithful Barbies with their extensive wardrobes that the little girls would spend hours dressing and undressing, there were plenty of My Little Ponies, dinkies and card games too.

When we had the combi (minibus) Dad would make the entire back of the combi into a giant bed, with the suitcases underneath a thin mattress for support, and the kids could play, sleep or enjoy the scenery as we travelled.

There was still plenty of that tireless question 'How Much Longer' but certainly time fled by.

'Padkors' was carefully planned !! (Padkors is the Afrikaans word for 'Road Food') and Mum spent many hours planning delicious treats for travellers. Cold sausages, carrot sticks, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter sandwiches, a thermos of coffee and off we would venture.

Yes, there were still squabbles, but at least one could move around instead of being tied to one spot, and one spot only, for hour after hour. Seat belts, car seats were not obligatory in the Olden Days!!

I know the laws are there for very good reason, that car seats for babies and toddlers have saved countless lives, I am just glad that I was able to experience and enjoy, unfettered toddler travel way back in the Dark Ages!

Bulawayo Theatre

I am looking for any information or photographs of the 1964 production of Peter Pan at the Bulawayo Theatre, directed by Peter Lewis. My father played one of the Lost Boys in the production, and I'm writing about his experience as a child actor.

I read with great interest your 25/8/2009 article on Alan Hardy's book 'A History of Theatre, Ballet and Orchestra in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe 1890-1980'. I can find no trace of this book online, and was wondering if you could help. Any photographs of Peter Lewis, the cast or crew, or any related information would be amazing!

Thank you and with best wishes,
Astrid

KEN MACDONALD

I wanted to respond to the email you sent me about Ken MacDonald's celebration of life. First of all, I want to express my deepest sympathies to you, Glennys, Muffy, and Skel. I know that Ken meant a lot to all of you, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm afraid I won't be able to make it to the event due to some other commitments, but please know that I will be thinking of all of you and sending my love from afar. I'm sure it will be a beautiful tribute to Ken, and I wish I could be there to celebrate his life with you.

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC

TUESDAY 14 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. THEO BROSS (CELLO) & GUNCHA HOJANEPESOVA (PIANO)
Theo Bross needs no introduction to Bulawayo audiences and he will be partnered by Guncha Hojanepesova, a recent arrival in Zimbabwe who will be making her debut in Bulawayo. They present a wide-ranging programme including one of the pinnacles of the cellist's repertoire with Brahms' First Cello Sonata as well as several shorter and delightful works.
Theo and Guncha are keen to support music in Bulawayo and the Academy and have offered to play in Bulawayo for 'what you can afford'! What we can afford depends on the support for the concert so we hope everyone will make an effort to attend.
A snack-supper with the performers will be available after the concert, price $10.00 including a glass of wine. It must be pre-booked at the Academy.
Please book for the concert in advance if possible. If you book on the night, please come early so that the concert can start on time!
Admission: US$5.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAYS 16 & 23 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. BROADCHURCH SERIES 2 - 2
The second series of 'Broadchurch' continues.
Ellie struggles to control her sister amid family tensions; Alec has to face his demons; Mark Latimer must make a decision.
- There's no denying it's a pleasure to revisit this cast and to once again share both the pain of this English town and the scenic glory of its seaside setting. [USA Today]
Admission: $2.50 [free to Film Members]

SATURDAY 18 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. CHRISTINE NYONI AND FRIENDS
Experience a night of African music ranging from different regions of our continent with a mix of classics to modern African music. There will be music from Salif Keita to Miriam Makeba. Come dressed in your best African attire!
Admission: US$5.00 - booking at the Academy

THURSDAY 23 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. BROADCHURCH SERIES 2 - FINAL EPISODES
A trap is set; Paul helps a figure in distress; Ellie finds herself alone. Decisions are made, truths are revealed, and lives are forever changed.
- Broadchurch remains a tense, engrossing drama. [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]
Admission: $2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 24 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. VERDI: REQUIEM
Verdi's Requiem was first performed 150 years ago on 22 May 1874; it was written in memory of the Italian writer and nationalist Alessandro Manzoni and is perhaps as operatic a score as anything he wrote, ranging from the dramatic power of the famous Dies Irae to the sublime lyricism of the work's arias and duets. This performance from Berlin was given to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Verdi's death in January 1901 and will be preceded by excerpts from a gala that took place just a few weeks before which includes extracts from four of his best-known operas, 'Un Ballo in Maschera', 'Don Carlos', 'Rigoletto' and 'La Traviata'.
- The performance is never less than engrossing and often astonishing. It's the heightened sense of concentration that grabs the listener, a wish by all the performers that these concerts should be something special. [Classical Source]
- This is a performance which starts exceptionally well but which grows and grows, all the soloists clearly becoming more and more caught up in the music making. And from the point of view of orchestral playing and the conductor's reading, this is the performance of one's dreams - a perfect balance between the spiritual and dramatic. [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

The Academy has a major hall booking for the week 27 May - 1 June and regrettably there will be no DVDs during that week.
