TREE JUNKIE

I know perfectly well that one is not supposed to follow ones' children around the world once they have grown up and left home, but most mothers I am sure, feel the same way that I do and wish to be close to their offspring.

However my children were very circumspect when they made their choice of countries, once they fled the coop after University.

He Who Must Purify Gold and She Who Must Run, made their way to Perth in Western Australia and She Who Must Kevlar decided on Waco in Texas.

Now these were obviously carefully thought out and premeditated choices, because neither Perth nor Waco have many trees, and they know that Mother cannot live where there are no trees.

Cunning Little Blighters !!

I know in both those areas you have to sweep up your own leaves but is this any reason at all not to plant trees, lots of trees, even evergreen trees, if it means not having to sweep up the leaves !!

One would have thought that, having been born in a garden which boasts the biggest tree in the entire city of Bulawayo, that they too would have a mad love affair with trees, just like their Mum, but then perhaps it is something that comes with age.

Our main tree is a Mozambican Fig and was the original Enid Blyton neighbourhood FarawayTree as far as every child in Bulawayo was concerned.

Apart from housing Dame Washalot and Mr Saucepanman, it also houses two nesting Hammerkops, a pair of Gymnogenes, several sets of Paradise Fly Catchers, zillions of doves and several fruit bats who have to fight for their lives daily as you can imagine with all the lurking predators.

Our suburb has the most incredible amount of wonderful shady trees and it is hard to imagine how any other city fathers have not tried to emulate our beautiful city.

Mother always used to say that one should plant a tree for every year of one's life and HeeHoo and I have certainly done our bit for the climate as far as that is concerned.

Among the trees we have planted over the years in various parts of the country are Cassias, Baobabs, Flamboyants, Erythrinas, Acacias, Natal Mahogany, Kya Nyasicas, avocado trees, lemon trees, Ficus Leratus, Ficus Benjamina and dozens of indigenous trees whose names escape me.

I must admit we have still a way to go because I doubt if the little copse of trees we planted on our "ex farm" have survived, but we will make sure that our legacy lives on, arboreally at least, if in no other way !!

And so to my Little Darlings, until you move to a more civilised part of the world where there are lots of trees, you can be sure that Mother will stay put under the spreading wings of the family Faraway Tree and count her blessings instead of hankering after her offspring !!

'The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.' an African saying

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk

The Academy offices will be closed over Easter, open until 1.00 p.m. on Friday 5 April, then closed until Thursday 2 May. The Academy itself will be open throughout April with some lessons taking place although access will be limited and difficult during Trade Fair Week which is 22 to 27 April.

THURSDAY 4 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. MAMMA MIA!
Yes, here it is again - but the original stage musical opened in the West End 25 years ago on 6 April 1999 so is surely worth celebrating!
And, in case you need reminding.. Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter's wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother's past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.
- An absolutely hilarious, rousing and joyous celebration that ought to have you dancing in the aisles. Hollywood.com]
- Cheese - but what wonderfully salty, sinfully satisfying cheese it is. [Toronto Star]
- The incongruous mix of nostalgia, James Bond crooning and the world's greatest actress bouncing up and down on a mattress is an undeniable kick. Mamma Mia! is major fun. [Detroit News]
- This is entertainment, not a movie. And as entertainment goes, Mamma Mia! belts it out of the park. [The Scorecard Review]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 5 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. PUCCINI: TOSCA
Opera is an inherently theatrical medium that does not lend itself readily to the realism of film treatment. The shining exception is Puccini's Tosca, an action-packed melodrama that unfolds in three taut and gripping acts like the meatiest of Hollywood films noir. And unlike most operas, these three acts are set in three very specific Roman locales. Thus this film takes place in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle (Act 1), the Palazzo Farnese (Act 2), and the Castel Sant'Angelo (Act 3). The evocative settings, however, would be mere window-dressing if the cast wasn't just right. Fortunately Placido Domingo is at his virile peak in the heroic tenor role of Cavaradossi; Raina Kabaivanska is a sultry, vocally beautiful Tosca; and a more infamous and domineering Scarpia than that of Sherrill Milnes can hardly be imagined. Bruno Bartoletti and the New Philharmonia Orchestra give lustily dramatic support. With the authenticity of the settings assured and such distinguished leads singing so well, this is an almost ideal filmed Tosca. [Mark Walker]
- This is both vocally enthralling and visually stunning. As Tosca, Raina Kabaivanska has never been lovelier and more animated. Her transformation from a woman plagued by jealousy and religiosity to a fiery warrior exhilarates and astounds. [Classical Net]
- This is the most magnificent version of Tosca I have ever seen. In addition to exquisite singing and acting, the settings in Rome are breath-taking. Unsurpassable.... [Amazon]
- This is my preferred Tosca DVD now, particularly for the often glorious Domingo. Raina Kabaivanska is a determined, strong Tosca, every inch the Italian temperament in her jealousy! The two singers work magically together [MusicWeb International]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

The Academy will be taking a break for the rest of April but..
THURSDAY 2 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the sixth Bond film and reviews upon release were mixed, but the film's reputation has improved greatly over time and it's now regarded as one of the strongest entries in the series as well as one of the most faithful adaptations of a Fleming novel - see more recent reviews below!
After saving vulnerable Countess Tracy di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg) from certain death, Bond heads off to hunt down Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Telly Savalas) one more time. This takes him to Switzerland, where he infiltrates Blofeld's heavily-fortified alpine headquarters, a facility covered by Blofeld's guards as well as his henchwoman, Irma Bunt. Posing as Sir Hilary Bray, he sets out to discover what does Blofeld has in mind this time..
- George Lazenby's only appearance as 007 is a fine entry in the series, featuring one of the most intriguing Bond girls (Diana Rigg), breathtaking visuals and some great ski chases. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service is pure poetry. It transcends the idea of a Bond film. Gorgeously photographed, thrillingly executed and wonderfully performed, this is the franchise zenith. [Film Inquiry]ling entry in the entire Bond series.
[Zaki's Corner]
- Ditching flash in favour of character development, this stylish and energetic entry is one of the best films in the series. Lazenby woz robbed. [Film4]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 3 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. INVITATION TO THE DANCE
A celebration of Daniel Barenboim who turned 80 at the end of 2022 but whose recent ill health has led to his semi-retirement. This concert with the Berlin Philharmonic was a celebration of the dance and includes music by Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Dvo ak, Strauss, Sibelius, Kodaly and composers from Barenboim's native Argentina.
- Daniel Barenboim is in ebullient form and surely there are few orchestras that could deliver this level of sheer out and out corporate virtuosity Even Barenboim shows his pleasure at this display! [Amazon]
- This is a real gem. The atmosphere is infectious and by the time you reach 'Tico Tico' you will be totally in harness for one of the most enjoyable concert recordings I have experienced on DVD. The Berliners really enjoy themselves in an evening's entertainment which I am sure will captivate you. [MusicWeb International]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAYS 9, 16 & 23 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. BROADCHURCH SERIES 2
The second series of Broadchurch focuses on the continuing fallout of the murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer in the close-knit coastal town of Broadchurch; the effect of Joe Miller's trial on his wife, former DS Ellie Miller (now a uniformed police officer in Devon); the Latimer family's struggle to achieve a normal life during Joe's trial; and new revelations that former DI Alec Hardy is protecting a witness in the failed Sandbrook child murder case.
- Will the series remain as compelling On the evidence of last night's twist-packed opener, perhaps even more so. [Independent]
- It looks like the second series of ITV's popular thriller is going to be far more interesting than we can usually expect from such a highly-anticipated follow-up. [New Statesman]
- The two plot lines are absorbing, the characters are well-drawn and the cinematography is even more stunning. [Daily Telegraph]
- Writer Chris Chibnall has gathered enough old loose ends and intriguing new strands to suggest that Mondays may again become a bad night for the nation's pubs and restaurants. [Guardian]
- What a relief to find that the first four episodes of season two are a promising continuation of season one. [Boston Globe]
Admission: US$6.00 the series / US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

Screening of "Tears of a Daughter"

Wednesday 24th April - 6pm, free rentrance, wine offered

Art Statement :
Tears Of A Daughter is a compilation of social problems largely faced by women in the society of Zimbabwe.
In the movie we follow a story of a young talented lady (Buhle) who is faced with arts industry exploitation challenges and her mother being physically abused while she is just trying to breakthrough and tell her story through her talent of singing.
In the film it also reveals the issue of lack of jobs in the country through Zolani who has studied law but still failing to get a job. However, the film stand much for a girl child in the community advocating for her protection and that she be given opportunities to achieve and be what she desires to be. These opportunities include career paths, rightul information about sex, education, and other related issues.
It is also important to note that, the film Tears Of A Daughter shows the consequences of trusting someone you do not know in business or anywhere in life through the issue of human trafficking. Over some years a lot of young girls disappeared through human trafficking only because they thought the people they are dealing with are genuine. Also the greatest thing we must not miss is that the mother is the first heroine of the child so as the father the first hero, therefore parents also have a huge role to play interms of how the children view the world.
Any form of abuse against women is not acceptable, as it create hatred and a lot of traumatic moments. Therefore if anything as such is happening at any household it is a case that should be reported. Another important theme pointed out in the film Tears Of A Daughter, is that woman should come together to help each other shine and protect one another through hard times.

19) Seeking Friends

I revisited your article of 2009 regarding the diaspora of the ballet world in Bulawayo where I went to school. I read your comment about Linda Brittain who I used to know and met up with in London when she was training. I know that returned to Cape Town and I just wondered if you might know anything of her whereabouts now or what became of her career

I would very much appreciate an update.
