A Salute to Berry Oosthuizen

For as far back as I can remember, Berry either had a lead around her neck, grasped tightly in her hand or was looking for one.

Her love and understanding of our four legged friends obviously blossomed long before she entered my hemisphere and by then I was dating Barry Henderson who had just become a proud owner of Bismarck Khan. A wonderful natured German Shepherd who would go on to win trophies for Obedience.

Sunday gatherings at the club was where we eventually crossed paths and Berry's dedication in the same vein of obedience meant we would meet on Sundays and the training would commence with our small dedicated members each putting in 100% effort to either stewarding, marshalling, running the tea room, (I was good at that), and caring and preparing the grounds from start to end

Berry went from strength to strength and fast forward some years was suddenly managing the SPCA with formidable strength and under her hawk eyes has been instrumental in keeping alive a sanctuary dedicated to those without a voice.

Man's best friend and others.

Through challenging seasons, Berry has made the sun shine warmly upon the four legged patrons of the concern that she managed in an orderly fashion.

Their welfare always at the forefront of business. Dealing with financial hardship would not have been easy but Berry has always come up trumps and delivered the charter of looking after her 'children' and finding their forever home and then starting all over again.

Watching from across the oceans and following Berry's incredible journey has been a joy and a testimony of how good a human she is.

May she always have that same sun shine to warm her days as she takes her final bow.

To the one who gave a voice to those that didn't have.
Thank you from the entire Community.

Meg Henderson

I was about to unhappily bin my old faded and damaged photos and slides when I received an email from Bruce McDonald.

I came across your post on the internet that mentioned Kerrie and Ashleigh Duckworth.

I've been searching for their mother (Mrs Duckworth) that taught me at Filabusi Primary School (1982 to 1985) since 1996.

She did a lot for me, including transferring me to Milton Junior School as she was leaving Filabusi, and I would like to thank her and reminisce.

May you please pass on my details to her or the twins, and ask them to contact me. Just to jog her memory, I won the Merit Shield on my last day of school at Filabusi Primary School in 1985.

DVD evenings now cost $2.50 and tickets will be available in books of four at $10.00 making entry to a DVD $2.50 by ticket - or $3.00 cash. ($5.00 cash for two entries will, of course, be entirely acceptable!) We hope this seems reasonable - cinemas in town are around $5.00 and the Academy has advantages including congenial company and safe parking!

Blazing Saddles was a huge box-office hit and remains the highest-grossing Western of all time, though critical reviews were mixed when it first opened theatrically exactly fifty years ago.. on 7 February 1974. When the railroad he wants to build is hindered by quicksand, wicked Hedley Lamar wants to destroy a small town called Rock Ridge to reroute it develops a seemingly genius plan to make Bart, one of his workers, the sheriff, as he is black and unable to rise to the challenge. But Sheriff Bart signs up the Waco Kid, a washed-up gunslinger with an obscure past, as his deputy and right-hand man, and things take an unexpected turn..
- Daring, provocative, and laugh-out-loud funny, Blazing Saddles is a gleefully vulgar spoof of Westerns that marks a high point in Mel Brooks' storied career. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- This movie just got better the longer it went. Little and Brooks are delightful to watch as the madcap story grows. Blazing Saddles is bold, provocative, irreverent, and hilarious. [Amazon]
- The movie was ahead of its time. The jokes in it still feel fresh and overall it's one of the funniest western movies out there. Strong 10. [Metacritic]
- It's a crazed grabbag of a movie that does everything to keep us laughing except hit us over the head with a rubber chicken. [Chicago Sun-Times]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

A pre-Valentine celebration in the grounds (weather permitting!) featuring Christine Nyoni and other amazing singers, a live band and emerging Bulawayo talent!
Booking at the Academy - Admission: $2.00
Dinner will be available at $20.00 per head including concert admission

Director Richard Lester reassembled his original cast of swashbucklers in The Return of the Musketeers, a sumptuous, action-packed adventure. D'Artagnan (Michael York), Athos (Oliver Reed), Porthos (Frank Finlay) and Aramis (Richard Chamberlain) executed the beautiful but lethal seductress Milady De Winter twenty years ago but now, Milady's ravishing daughter Justine (Kim Cattrall) has vowed revenge. Meanwhile, Athos' son Raoul has grown to manhood and when he and Justine meet, swords and sparks fly! The four musketeers need to stay one step ahead of Justine while they race to foil a cunning political plot - and are then sent to London by Cardinal Mazarin to rescue Charles I!
- Really good sequel, plenty of laughs along with the action. [IMDb]
- The Return of the Musketeers" is a fun swashbuckler that succeeds in entertaining from beginning to end!!!! [Amazon]
- The Return of the Musketeers is a worthy follow-up to the original films. Highly Recommended. [DVD Talk]
Admission: US$2.50 [free to Film Members]

Originally presented as part of the 700th anniversary celebrations of the poet's death, Dante's epic journey through the afterlife in The Divine Comedy, is realised in a major artistic collaboration between trailblazing forces of the contemporary arts scene. Wayne McGregor's groundbreaking choreography comes together with a virtuosic new score by Thomas Ades, and designs by the renowned artist Tacita Dean. Together they illuminate the extraordinary vision of Dante in this three-part work for the full Company.
- The Dante Project is utterly thrilling, it's bold, beautiful, emotional and utterly engaging. The dancers perform as if liberated by the sheer excitement of it all and by the time Dante reaches Paradiso, the music is as radiant as the dancers, flitting and flying around the stage, all in white, like so many shiny celestial orbs. The mood is one of abstracted joy, deep but dazzling.. [The Guardian]
- It's bold, beautiful, emotional and utterly engaging. [The Observer]
- The Royal Ballet's Divine Comedy comprises three acts that brim with style and drama. Heaven, hell, and everything in between: Wayne McGregor's new work has huge scale and ambition. [Independent]

Stringed Moments with Barbs
Thursday 29th February - 5pm to 7pm - free entrance

The Stringed Moments project is inspired by the lived experiences of Barbs, which range from surviving cervical cancer, endometriosis, a hysterectomy, a divorce, abuse, cardiac arrests and even living with an autoimmune disease. Each challenge came with its own set of lessons, but she's continually seen the power that comes with redefining and rebuilding your identity on your own terms. She has made it her life work to create space for this transformation for those searching for a better way to be, and Stringed Moments is a manifestation of that purpose.

Bold Dialogue is an intuitive wellness platform that facilitates healing, ignites hope and brings the possibility of boldly living a life that honours your passions and dreams. "We work with women across Africa, equipping them with the support, mentorship and tools required to transcend trauma in order to truly operate from a place of excellence" states Barbs.

"We are going to use letters written to various people who had a hand in traumatising the writer to invoke healing conversations with the crowd. We also hope to bring emotional catharsis to the listeners. This series of letters is called Stringed Moments".
