EFIFI
We climbed Efifi in the Matopos not so long ago, accompanied by precious members of the family who now live in Australia. It was a personal time, especially for my daughter Jo who was born in Bulawayo and in whose blood, the very word Matopos runs deep.
Nothing had changed since her last sojourn, the lichen was as iridescent, the terracotta hues in the rocks were thrilling, her geography lessons at Girls College in 'onion weathering' came stumbling back, the baboons' utterances were iconic, the black eagles threaded their way through the skies and the exquisite peace was exactly the same as it had been when she had visited her brother at REPS School what seemed like a thousand summers ago.
Jo and her husband Alex walked in glorious isolation across the great grey granite rocks, while the oldies took advantage of a neat little hollow in the rocks for a moment's solitude.
'The peacefulness of it all: the chaotic grandeur of it: it creates a feeling of awe and brings home to one how very small we all are.'
So many things that we Zimbos take for granted enthralled this beautiful young woman. The 'everlasting plant' that festooned many of her dressing tables over her young years, the magnificent 365 degree vista from the summit. The pond where, during a wet season, scorpions and frogs would fight to the death for possession, the soft tufts of wild grass where no doubt the klipspringers slept at night.
The veritable tapestry of happiness that made her into what she is today....strong, resilient, beautiful, proud and capable.
John Eppel has a wonderful collection of poems about the Matopos and I quote.
'When I die I want you to make of me
ashes, the colour of infinity;
the colour of horizons where the sky
beyond the focus of an eagle's eye
meets earth - not any earth - the western hills;
five wasted cheekbones where makaza spills,
of drops, a shiver, trickling slow.
WATCHDOG
Wonder if you or any of your readers can assist me, I have been trying to find an address for Mike Chadwick, who used to live in Bulawayo, he was a Wood Carver and also went by the title Chief Mopani' He had many Exhibitions of his work in Bulawayo and Harare back in the 70s and 80s I remember. I do have two of his early pieces,
and I think that I heard that he came back to UK. But everything that I have tried has drawn a blank so far,
Any chance that your readers may know of his whereabouts, of course he may no longer be with us
Many thanks Mags,
Graham Rowe (ex ZITF) now living in London.
grayrowe38@gmail.com
I lived in Bulawayo in the sixties (perhaps before your time). In later years my mother, Helen Williams ran the RSPCA shop there.
During my time in Bulawayo I was friendly with the Du Preez family who I seem to remember lived in Pauling Road Suburbs (though it may have been another road) I think Mrs Du Preez taught at Evelyn School..She also wrote books for children.. She had two children, Moya and Phillip..Like me they would be in their seventies now.
I have lived in Europe (France) for many years now but often wonder what became of my Bulawayo friends.
I wonder if you might have known the Du Preez family and what became of them
I have enjoyed reading your articles. They stir memories..Hence my letter.
Regards from Paris.

BULAWAYO BOY - BRUCE MILLAR, admired by many for his contribution to the theatrical world, passed away on Thursday 16 November, a month before his 78th birthday .
Bruce's acting career began when he was Macbeth at Northlea School. Of some interest is the fact that Bruce took his ' A ' Levels at Eveline High School - the first ( and only ) male pupil there!
He gained a degree from Bristol University and took part in various stage productions before he had starring roles in shows such as 'Godspell' and especially 'Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour DreamCoat'.
He also made quite a few records before beginning his radio performances on SABC : ' The BigBig Brunch ' was very popular .
In April last year, Bruce was diagnosed with Alzheimers and was well looked after at Silwood Lodge in Johannesburg, where his daughter, Natasha, lives with her husband and young son.
Bruce's son, Matthew, is married and living in the USA.
A LIVESTREAM IS POSSIBLE PLEASE CONSULT HEATHER OR NATASHA BELOW.

THURSDAY 30 NOVEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE FOUR MUSKETEERS: MILADY'S REVENGE
The sequel picks up almost exactly where The Three Musketeers left off - in fact the two films were originally intended as one but a running time of over three-and-a-half hours was thought too much! Our four swashbuckling heroes once again they do battle with the devious Cardinal Richelieu and his evil accomplice Milady de Winter who are determined to wreak a terrible revenge after being foiled in their plan to discredit the queen.
A grand mixture of adventure and comedy. [Journal and Courier]
The conclusion to The Three Musketeers is an equally satisfying romp.
Forget all other Musketeer films of the past century. These are the pinnacle. [FilmCritic.com]
Full of wry bits of business and humorous asides, and ironic contrasts, The Four Musketeers has the great benefit of continuity of cast and style and tone, although the tone becomes much darker here. [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]
FRIDAY 1 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. LA FILLE MAL GARDEE
The ballet is set on a farm and tells a story of love between Lise (the daughter of Widow Simone) and Colas, a young farmer. It contains some of Sir Frederick Ashton's most inventive choreography, most strikingly in the series of energetic pas de deux that express the youthful passion of the young lovers, performed here by Marianela Nunez and Carlos Acosta. The ballet is laced with exuberant good humour, and elements of national folk dance, from dancing chickens and a maypole dance to a Lancashire clog dance for Widow Simone. Osbert Lancaster's colourful designs heighten the production's delightful pastoral wit and the ballet's premiere in 1960 was a resounding success; over sixty years later, it remains a firm favourite of The Royal Ballet's repertory.
It would take a spectacularly clod-footed cast to give a bad performance of Ashton's La fille mal gardee - so expert is the ballet's construction that it is almost dancer-proof. With Carlos Acosta and Marianela Nunez, Fille moves on a straight, joyous line from barnyard to bed. [Guardian]
Nunez is at her radiant best in romantic comedy. Her fleet, frisky feet make light of the filigree pointework, her jump has bliss-driven buoyancy and every pirouette is a physical expression of the character's sunlit self-confidence - most especially in the cornfield ensemble, where she becomes the nerveless hub of a happy human maypole while her audience coos with pleasure. [Telegraph]
Frederick Ashton's sixty-year-old Fille is still as fresh as a daisy, and as bright and cheerful as the sunflowers lined up against the wall of Osbert Lancaster's pop-up picture book set. The dancing is superb, the characterization not overdone, the acting and mime flowing naturally from the situations, and the dancers look as if they are enjoying every minute, carrying us along with them. [Dance Tabs]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAY 7 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
Shakespeare in Love was released 25 years ago on 11 December 1998 and also celebrates the publication of the First Folio four hundred years ago on 8 November 1623! Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is a known but struggling poet, playwright, and actor, who not only has sold his next play to both Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush) and Richard Burbage (Martin Clunes), but now faces a far more difficult problem: he is bereft of ideas and has yet to begin writing. He is in search of his muse, the woman who will inspire him but all attempts fail him until he meets the beautiful Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow).
- Endlessly witty, visually rapturous, and sweetly romantic, Shakespeare in Love is a delightful romantic comedy that succeeds on nearly every level. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- In a little more than two hours, director John Madden, screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard and a terrific cast and crew accomplish the miraculous. [Hollywood Reporter]
- It almost defies you not to have fun. [The Times]
- This is a joyous and quite brilliant comedy. [BBC.com]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]
