Gambling and the family.

I know I sound like an old prude here but I just have to vent..

Well aware that life progresses furiously and leaves us oldies behind, but I feel sad that this online gambling addiction has overtaken South Africa.

In the dark ages when we were young and free, gambling in South Africa had been heavily restricted since 1673, with South Africa's Gambling Act of 1965 officially banning all forms of gambling except betting on horse racing which existed as a sporting activity.
In the late 1970s casinos started operating in the homelands of Bophuthatswana, Ciskei, Transkei and Venda.

But by 1995 an estimated 2000 illegal casinos were believed to be operating within the country. In 1994, when the new democratic government came to power, all forms of gambling were legalised. In 1996 the National Gambling Act instituted a system of licensed casinos and a single national lottery. Horse racing was also proclaimed gambling activity.
Now I must confess even I take the odd lottery ticket, and have frequented a couple of casinos in the Victoria Falls, but that has been my wicked contribution. Has our moral compass been interfered with I also distinctly remember that shops were closed on Sunday, the sale of liquor was banned on a Sunday, so we could go to church.

The National Gambling Act 2004 in RSA prohibited both offering interactive gambling services and engaging in interactive internet games but then the National Gambling Amendment Act of 2008 was meant to be an attempt to legalise interactive gambling in the country and make provisions for the regulation of this market.
On 20 August 2010 even online gambling offered through servers located outside the country was banned in South Africa. This was the result of the North Gauteng High Court judgement on the jurisdiction of online gambling transactions in the country. Consequently, both offering gambling services online and gambling online became illegal.

But little by little more and more gambling was allowed.
By 2021 there were over 30 licensed online sports betting sites in South Africa, including local South African operators such as Bet.co.za and international operators including Betway and Sportingbet. All online sports betting websites are licensed by their respective provinces and by the NGB.
Don't get me wrong, we all love the occasional 'flutter' but this form of entertainment seems to me to be sweeping rapidly though South Africa, in fact not only South Africa but the entire world. But sadly it has been proven that gambling problems affect the functioning of family and intimate relationships.

Impaired family relationships, emotional problems and financial difficulties are some of the most common impacts on family members of people with gambling problems.
There is consistent evidence of an association between gambling problems and family violence.
The children of problem gambling parents are at a much higher risk of developing gambling problems than the children of non-problem gambling parents. Adverts for 'Gambling Counselling' abound on radio and TV.

I must reiterate, gambling is one's prerogative, but should it be so flouted in a country where poverty is so evident, and parents could be spending money on gambling instead of bringing food home to the family

Every street light advertises betting, TV adverts bombard one, behind every restroom door is a poster inviting one to bet.

A good thing or bad thing The jury is out....

THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. HAPPY VALLEY SERIES 2
The second series comes to a breath-taking conclusion but some things are left open-ended for a third series that will be shown early in the New Year!
- The action comes to a head with a deadly, gripping game of bluff - and once again, Sally Wainwright has created a tender tragedy that will freeze your blood. [The Guardian]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

Tickets: US$10.00 - available from: Cozim office at Deja Vu restaurant Picassos at Zonkiziswe Bonsa Spar at Hillside Greenvale at Bradfield Still Haven in Suburbs Fazak Orange Elephant Wholesale Beef at Ascot shopping centre Raji Hassamal uniforms (Fife St., opp. City Hall)

THURSDAYS 12 & 19 OCTOBER THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY
The number 42 is, in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is 'the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, calculated by an enormous supercomputer named Deep Thought over a period of 7.5 million years' and, since it's 42 years since Hitchhiker's Guide appeared on television it seemed a good time to show it at the Academy.
Arthur Dent wakes up one morning to find that a big, yellow bulldozer is trying to destroy his house to make way for a bypass. Twelve minutes later, a big yellow spaceship shows up to destroy planet Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass. One of few apocalyptic stories where the world is blown up in the first few minutes! Luckily, Arthur's friend Ford Prefect turns out to be an alien and not from Guildford after all, a field researcher for The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Together they hitch a lift on board a Vogon constructor ship, and with the help of their guide, a Babel fish and of course a towel, they set off to explore the universe together..
- I've always felt the television incarnation of Hitchhiker's should be better appreciated. [AV Club]
- Douglas Adams' tale of a wayward Earthling cast into the world of space travel is so great that even its third-best version - after the original radio play and Adams' series of novels - is a classic. [Rolling Stone]
- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable series. In fact it's arguably the most remarkable series ever to come out of the British Broadcasting Corporation. [Den of Geek]
- Just brilliant. Follows the book as close as it is possible unlike the horrible movie of 2005. [Rotten Tomatoes]
Admission: $2.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE BRENT BIRCKHEAD QUARTET - N.B. TO BE CONFIRMED
Saxophonist Brent Birckhead is a 'riveting' improviser (New York Times), award-winning soloist, bandleader and composer with a drive for creative risk and deep respect for legacy. While studying at Howard University, he won Downbeat magazine's Student Music Award for best blues/pop/rock soloist. His playing demonstrates an impressive mastery of styles - funk, r & b, and go-go in addition to mainstream jazz - honed in major D.C. groups like the Bohemian Caverns Orchestra and the Chuck Brown Band. Birckhead has performed and toured with a starry roster of legendary artists, and recent appearances with his band have included stops at prestigious venues including the Blue Note, Hollywood Bowl, Merriweather Post Pavilion and Billboard Tokyo and Osaka.
ADMISSION: FREE

FRIDAY 20 OCTOBER AT 6.30 P.M. ROCKET MAN
Paramount Pictures calls Rocketman: 'An epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John's breakthrough years.' The film tells Elton John's life story, beginning with his early years in Pinner, Middlesex, as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music. The biopic also touches on his influential and enduring musical partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as his struggles with depression, substance abuse and acceptance of his sexual orientation.
- Rocketman ramps the camp up to 11, throws on some sequinned spectacles, and sparks fireworks of pure joy in glitzy song-and-dance routines. [Sight & Sound]
- Rocketman manages to be campy and yet sincere, serious and yet ridiculous, profound and yet silly, and quite wonderful. Just like Elton himself. [Chicago Sun-Times
- There may be a showbiz biopic to come that matches Rocketman for wit, energy, charm, candour and shameless exuberance. But I think it's gonna be a long, long time. [London Evening Standard]
- Pure Elton and pure pleasure. [Metro UK]
- It finds strength in texture, beauty in sadness, and an inspired finale in a crackpot arrangement of one of the singer's greatest hits. [The Times]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]
