19) Seeking Friends Greetings from South of the great, grey-green, greasy Limpopo. Was reading online, an article you put up by Laurie Bond on various bands and how the Northlea school pipe band fed into the 2nd battalion RRR pipe band. And had earlier come across the fact, that there is a tune titled '2nd battalion, Royal Rhodesia Regiment', that is still played occasionally. A little bit of information on myself, I was from Karoi, schooled at Plumtree school, and later a farmer, for some 15 odd years. Then stuff happened, the recent turbulent years, and I find myself living in Pretoria, now married, and with one son attending Pretoria Boys High School and another will go there, next year. The younger son has joined the PBHS pipe band and has been to several gatherings. The master in charge of the Pipe Band, James Orr, has started to collate and put together some of the history of the Pipe bands in Southern Africa. He has started on Facebook, it might grow into a book . James himself, also pipes with the Pretoria Highlanders grade 3 band. Mags, do you know much about the history of the Northlea pipe band I don't think it is still going Was it still going in 1978, when I started at Plumtree When was it started, what tartan did they use The tutors or masters in charge Charlie Stuart, was one of their piping tutors. Perhaps also the history of the Churchill pipe band They are still going I know that St John's in Harare, is still going strong, then it is a younger band, history wise. Looking on the internet, I saw that Gary Davies, passed away in 2019, was a pipe band tutor for St Benedicts and he learned to pipe at Northlea. Plus, I have an older friend, who remembers the days when the Northlea school band used to come down, and do very well in competition with SA schools pipe bands. Please, if you have some information and would share it with us, or you know someone who would, James Orr and myself would be very appreciative. James for his project and myself for the knowledge. PS in case you are interested, PBHS pipe band use the Leslie tartan. And the big brother band/s, the Pretoria Highlanders grade 3 and grade 4 bands use the hunting Stewart tartan. I believe that most, if not all of the Pretoria Highlanders' kilts date back to about 1939, when World War II broke out and the regiment was formed. The regiment was disbanded in 2017, but the band plays on, as one might say u25137230@tuks.co.za Grant Pilcher
