Hand Holding Blues

I do hope that HeeHoo will become President of the United States one day !!
He certainly has the intellectual capability, but the main reason is that he will be forced to HOLD MY HAND !!

Failing that he needs to take more notice of the way Meghan and Harry travel. (Duke and Duchess of Sussex for the uninitiated!!)

It is obviously obligatory for USA First Ladies and First Men to hold hands adoringly at all times during state events. But of course the first prize goes to Megan and Harry, they might wear away the skin on their hands if their hand holding marathon continues for much longer!!

HeeHoo has never been a HAND HOLDER, His hand, for a start is much larger than mine, and his fingers much bigger, so my delicate mitt gets seriously stressed.

My phalanxes are pulled to capacity, my stretched metacarpus go into spasm, and my grapple and grasp becomes seriously inadequate.

Subsequently we are a metacarpusly challenged couple !! Besides which HeeHoo is not a groper by nature .... so I would delight in his having to hold my hand because the PR people say so !!

Taking one's arm is another loving gesture that I would make the most of if we were America's First Couple. HeeHoo first took my arm solicitously on the day we got married .....even then he had to wrestle it away from my dear departed Dad who took me by the incorrect arm to march me down the aisle. To the glee of the congregation - I nearly got married to my Papa in error !! However although he forgot about solicitous arm holding for many years, he now knows to do it whenever he can, as I am now prone to fall on my face, especially on Swedens cobbled streets!!

Don't get me wrong, HeeHoo shows much affection in other ways, for example I am exactly the right height for him to lean on as I am the same height as his favourite bar counter !!

It's all to do with astrology of course, Capricorns are not big on showing public affection according to my book on the stars !

A Capricorn will tell you he loves you twice in his life, I have been told, once on the day he proposes and the second time on the day one's first child is born ... and so my only hope is for him to succeed Mr Biden.

Mind you, don't get me wrong, he has won the Father of the Year Award and the Husband of the Year Award for the last forty years, and grandfather of the year award for the last 7 years, so holding hands really is very low on the priority list I suppose....

I mean they are a lucky couple, Meghan and Harry both the same height for comfortable hand holding. HeeHoo is much taller that I, I am but "two bricks and a ticky high" as Mother used to say, and the Reluctant Duchess is statuesque and regal.

Happily my two daughters are the same size as I (height wise only I assure you) and they love to hold hands with Mom. They love to hug and snuggle, and the three of us can easily make up for HeeHoo's stern Victorian fatherly attitude. And now that I have grandchildren I get more cuddles than even I can cope with!!

But hey, looking at what the years ahead hold for all of us, maybe I have changed my mind, and not all the hand holding in the world would make me wish to walk my way down the road to Buckingham palace or the White House !!

2) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

In memoriam of Cedric Jack Tipping-Woods, who passed away on 27 May 2023 after a short illness. Cedric was our much beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, fisherman and soldier. Brave and true to the end, loved beyond all words.

Trevor McAllister

Much loved husband of Yvette for 58 years.

Will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.

RICHARD DOLLAR

Richard Dollar passed away peacefully on 17 May 2023 at his home in Bulawayo at the age of 82.

Born on 30 December 1940, Richard grew up in the midlands, attending CJR and Chaplin School. He then attended UCT, where he played for the first XV rugby team, and qualified with a BSc in Geology. Richard spent his early career on the Copperbelt, returning to the midlands, and eventually settling in Bulawayo where he developed Gold Mines in the Hope Fountain area.

Everyone who knew Richard will never forget his kindness, compassion, and cheeky disposition. He was a true gentleman, and his in-depth knowledge of this country will be sorely missed

Richard is survived by his wife Rowena, sons Perry and Graeme, and 4 grandchildren

THURSDAYS 1 & 8 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. THE FORSYTE SAGA : SERIES 2 - TO LET
Set in the 1920s - two decades after the first series ended 'The Forsyte Saga: To Let' follows the courtship of two star-crossed Forsyte cousins. Children at the close of last series, they are now 18 and in love, but as they soon find out, their parents hide a dark secret that ruins their romantic dreams.
- Once again the sumptuous production design, beautiful costumes and impressive use of locations make 'To Let' a visual feast in the great tradition of British costume dramas. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- This second instalment lives up to the expectations created by the first series and by the novel itself. Highly recommended to fans of British top quality literary drama. [IMDb]
- This is an extremely well-scripted piece of work and the resolution is undeniably moving. [The Guardian]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 9 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. JERSEY BOYS
From Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood comes the big-screen adaptation of 'Jersey Boys' the Tony Award-winning musical which ran for over 4,600 performances on Broadway. Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young), Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen), Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) and Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza) have the magic sound that propels them from singing under streetlights to singing in spotlights. With songs like 'Sherry', 'Big Girls Don't Cry', 'Walk Like a Man' and many more, the quartet finds itself at the top of the charts. However, personal and professional problems threaten to tear the group apart.
- 'Jersey Boys' tells a familiar story, yes, but rarely told this well and with this much heart and soul. [New York Post]
- 'Jersey Boys',' a rags-to-riches tale with glimpses behind the scenes of the music business, is pretty well irresistible. [Maltin's Movie Guide]
- Moves confidently for 135 minutes, with bright performances (Tony winner John Lloyd Young as Frankie outstanding), catchy numbers, a sparkle-and-sepia period look and one sublime in-joke for moviemanes. [Financial Times]
- The film entertainingly recreates an acclaimed stage show that you can now see for the price of a multiplex ticket rather than a Broadway one. [Toronto Star ]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film and Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAY 15 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. SHARPE'S EAGLE
Sean Bean stars as Sharpe, now a captain saddled with the South Essex, a battalion run by incompetents and filled with soldiers who have never been in battle. When the South Essex loses its colours (its regimental flag), Sharpe vows to save the honour of the regiment by capturing a French Imperial standard: an eagle.
- One of the best in the series. Lots of action and adventure with an outstanding Sean Bean doing a wonderful job as Sharpe. [Amazon]
- It's got everything a Sharpe movie needs. Enemies within his own ranks, enemies to fight, little subplots, romance, singing, comedy, monologues, death, killing.... [Leterboxd.com]
- The film adaptation of Sharpe's Eagle brings the book's essence to life. Every time I watch, I think to myself, 'this is a damn good show.' Sharpe's Eagle is neither a perfect book nor a perfect film. Both are, however, as near to perfection as is perhaps possible. Fine storytelling, characters, love triangles, action, history. [Blogger]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 16 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. OPERA GALA FROM BADEN BADEN
This glamorous live concert features Anna Netrebko, Elina Garana, Ramon Vargas, and Ludovic Tezier in a programme of well-known excerpts including the Pearl-Fishers Duet, the Flower Duet, the Toreador's Song and many more from operas by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Saint-Saens.
- You don't have to be an operatic aficionado to like this one. It is, in the main, a succession of popular operatic pieces, some arias, some duets, with a couple of quartets slung in for good measure, and sung by four of today's finest artists. [Amazon]
- Stellar voices, optimal atmosphere. [Badische Zeitung]
- Operatic galas on disc can show the participants on careless form. No sign of that here, with an opening 'Flower Duet' from Lakme whose essential intimacy is conveyed in a nicely blended performance from Anna Netrebko and Elina Garana. [BBC Music Magazine]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film & Red Carpet Members]
