First World Blunders

For Mother's Day our daughter gave us tickets to an opera at the The Royal Swedish Opera House in Stockholm. The Royal Swedish Opera House is Sweden's national theatre for opera and ballet, founded by Gustav III in 1773. A truly magnificent building overlooking the vibrant Stockholm waterfront with a view of the Royal Swedish Palace the official residence of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

'Opera' I thought ! To my old fashioned psyche, tiaras and gold lame gowns But I toned it down a bit and set off with the family in a dress and a pair of wedge heeled court shoes. That worked not so well over Swedens perpetual cobblestones but as we entered the imposing Opera House, I saw that I had indeed made a shoe blunder... a gigantic 'Footwear Fail'.

The Gustavian opera building is very imposing with its centre Corinthian tetrastyle portico supporting four statues and topped by the royal crown. The four-tiered auditorium is oval in shape, has excellent acoustics and sight lines. The sumptuous foyer contains neoclassic medallions and pilasters.

We were not in the grand auditorium as I had visualised! The Opera was a Children's Opera called, 'Var ar smorgasen '
which translated means 'Where is my Sandwich ' !!

Thank goodness I had not worn my gold lame because instead of being in the magnificent main auditorium, the childrens' opera was hosted in a rather more intimate setting!
Not knowing what to expect is pretty much the Swedish way of life, sneakers are pretty much the order of the day with the inclement 'Summer'. It only dawned on me as we entered the foyer, where there were rows and rows of neatly placed sneakers and boots of all shapes and sizes.
We dutifully took our shoes off as one is won't to do in First World Households.. but as sure as eggs are eggs, I was the only buffoon in the entire auditorium in bare feet!! Everyone else sported an elegant pair of Swedish socks!!

In my puce faced horror, I headed for the bathroom, and the attendant, who mistook my horrified stance for some other problem, hurriedly ushered me into the WheelChair accessible bathroom.

Short of wrapping loo paper round my feet there was nothing else to do, but to soldier on regardless, but in my distress, instead of flushing the loo, I pulled the emergency cord in error.

Sirens, alarm bells, flashing red lights ensued and the attendant came rushing to my aid. Now even more red faced I apologised shame fadedly and said 'we are not from here' to which the pleasant Swedish attendant replied looking disdainfully at my bare feet 'I thought as much'....

The Opera by the way, was wonderful!!

4) Notices and Events

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk

WEDNESDAY 17 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. THE ACADEMY AT 70 : HISTORY DINNER - PAUL HUBBARD
Paul Hubbard needs no introduction and his History Dinners are very popular. This one will cover the history of music in Bulawayo, prehistory to the present with particular reference to the Academy and include live performances - mbira, marimba, classical piano, voice and more!

Paul comments: 'Bulawayo is recognised as a primary hub of the music and arts industries in Zimbabwe today. The city and surrounds have a long pedigree of nurturing and delivering talent in all spheres of music and the cultural arts. Performers and artists in Bulawayo helped to create jazz, save the marimba, revive traditional drumming as a national icon and foster talent at all levels of musical production. The high and low notes of the history of music in Bulawayo will be explored, with the Zimbabwe Academy of Music, now in its 70th year, playing a pivotal role in this story.'
Pre- booking at the Academy essential - tickets including supper: $15.00

THURSDAY 18 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM
The new Indiana Jones film is scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 18 May so it seems a good excuse to show chronologically the first of the films, though the second to be released! Harrison Ford stars as Indy who needs to retrieve a precious gem and several kidnapped young boys on behalf of a remote East Indian village. With the aid of a night club singer (Kate Capshaw) and a 12-year old boy, he soon discovers the great mysterious terror surrounding a booby-trapped temple known as the Temple of Doom..

Steven Spielberg creates an atmosphere of happy disbelief: the more breath-taking and exhilarating the stunts are the funnier they are. Nobody has ever fused thrills and laughter in quite the way that he does here. [New Yorker]
It may be too 'dark' for some, but 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' remains an ingenious adventure spectacle that showcases one of Hollywood's finest filmmaking teams in vintage form. [Rotten Tomatoes]
Spielberg has come up with another rousing piece of entertainment. [New York Daily News]
The sustained furore of humour, visual panache and headlong momentum makes for dazzling cinema. All of which makes it possibly Spielberg's most underrated film. [Empire Magazine]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 26 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: ORIENTAL NIGHT
Neeme Jarvi conducts the Berlin Philharmonic in an Oriental Night that features Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade' and Janine Jansen is the soloist in music by Massenet and Saint-Saens.
A superb setting with some 20,000 classical music lovers present; beautiful audio, fantastic videography, and to round it off, a stunning violin soloist in Janine Jansen. [BachTrack]
A varied programme and highly recommended. This is a terrific concert and deserves 5 stars. [Amazon]
Janine Jansen is the highlight of the programme and she plays earnestly, expressively and colourfully. The overall selection of music for the concert was wonderful, the venue great and Jarvi does a terrific job of leading the orchestra in delivering a most enjoyable evening of beautiful, classical music. [MusicWeb International]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAY 25 - SATURDAY 27 MAY & THURSDAY 1 - SATURDAY 3 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M.
MATINEES: SATURDAY 27 MAY & SATURDAY 3 JUNE AT 2.30 P.M.
ALADDIN, THE MUSICAL - CO-PRODUCTION WITH THE BULAWAYO THEATRE
Directed by Doug Bramsen and Sandy Bradnick - Musical Director: Vusi Ndebele
Booking at the Bulawayo Theatre from Monday 8 May - Tickets: $10.00

THURSDAYS 1 & 8 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. THE FORSYTE SAGA : SERIES 2 - TO LET
Set in the 1920s - two decades after the first series ended 'The Forsyte Saga: To Let' follows the courtship of two star-crossed Forsyte cousins. Children at the close of last series, they are now 18 and in love, but as they soon find out, their parents hide a dark secret that ruins their romantic dreams.
Once again the sumptuous production design, beautiful costumes and impressive use of locations make 'To Let' a visual feast in the great tradition of British costume dramas. [Rotten Tomatoes]
This second instalment lives up to the expectations created by the first series and by the novel itself. Highly recommended to fans of British top quality literary drama. [IMDb]
This is an extremely well-scripted piece of work and the resolution is undeniably moving. [The Guardian]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]
