Mothers Day!! 3) Congratulations 4) Notices and Events ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk THURSDAY 11 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. SPARTACUS Spartacus is the tale of a bold gladiator Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), born and raised a slave. After weeks of being trained to kill for the arena, Spartacus turns on his owners and leads the other slaves in rebellion. As the rebels move from town to town, their numbers swell as escaped slaves join their ranks. Under the leadership of Spartacus, they make their way to southern Italy, where they hope to cross the sea and return to their homes. The action-packed spectacle won four Academy Awards and, as well as Kirk Douglas, featured a cast of screen legends including Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons, John Gavin and Tony Curtis. - One of the greatest Hollywood epics. [The Observer] - The great-granddaddy of Ridley Scott's Gladiator hasn't lost any muscle tone after half a century, and Kirk Douglas's direct, unpretentious performance as the great slave-rebel Spartacus is more engaging than ever. [Guardian] - Featuring terrific performances and epic action, Kubrick's swords-and-sandals epic is a true classic. [Rotten Tomatoes] - Spartacus is a special experience; a classic epic with a distinctly modern sensibility. [Metacritic] Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members] FRIDAY 12 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. KHACHATURIAN: SPARTACUS After Hollywood, Spartacus with the Bolshoi and Carlos Acosta! Acclaimed in his prime as the world's greatest male dancer, Carlos Acosta, dances perhaps the greatest male ballet lead, Spartacus, in Grigorovich's famous Soviet ballet, created for the Bolshoi to Khachaturian's score. Following sensational performances in Moscow and London in 2007, the Bolshoi's production was re-staged and filmed in January 2008 in the Paris Opera's Palais Garnier, especially for Acosta. - A fantastic exhibition of male strength in ballet. It's all testosterone fuelled striking of attitudes, naked aggression and amazing dance. For all their muscles the male protagonists seem to defy the laws of gravity - an amazing display of Olympic rated virility! [The Ballet Bag] - This is as good as you are going to get in terms of capturing Carlos's physical power. I have seen him in many Royal Ballet performances, but Spartacus surpassed them all. [Amazon] - For the Bolshoi too, Acosta's triumph was theirs, since this is a ballet that's not easy to sell as more than big, flash, macho spectacle. Acosta is the one man who has had both the supreme physicality for the gigantic demands, and who carried the dilemma of Spartacus as a man verily in his own soul, and transmitted it nakedly. This is blazingly evident on this recording. [The Arts Desk - DVD of the Year] Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members] WEDNESDAY 17 MAY AT 6.00 P.M. THE ACADEMY AT 70 : HISTORY DINNER - PAUL HUBBARD Paul Hubbard needs no introduction and his History Dinners are very popular. This one will cover the history of music in Bulawayo, prehistory to the present with particular reference to the Academy and include live performances - mbira, marimba, classical piano, voice and more! Paul comments: 'Bulawayo is recognised as a primary hub of the music and arts industries in Zimbabwe today. The city and surrounds have a long pedigree of nurturing and delivering talent in all spheres of music and the cultural arts. Performers and artists in Bulawayo helped to create jazz, save the marimba, revive traditional drumming as a national icon and foster talent at all levels of musical production. The high and low notes of the history of music in Bulawayo will be explored, with the Zimbabwe Academy of Music, now in its 70th year, playing a pivotal role in this story.' Booking at the Academy from Monday 8 May - tickets including supper: $15.00 THURSDAY 18 MAY AT 6.30 P.M. INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM Carriages: 8.45 p.m. The new Indiana Jones film is scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 18 May so it seems a good excuse to show chronologically the first of the films, though the second to be released! Harrison Ford stars as Indy who needs to retrieve a precious gem and several kidnapped young boys on behalf of a remote East Indian village. With the aid of a night club singer (Kate Capshaw) and a 12-year old boy, he soon discovers the great mysterious terror surrounding a booby-trapped temple known as the Temple of Doom.. - Steven Spielberg creates an atmosphere of happy disbelief: the more breath-taking and exhilarating the stunts are the funnier they are. Nobody has ever fused thrills and laughter in quite the way that he does here. [New Yorker] - It may be too "dark" for some, but Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom remains an ingenious adventure spectacle that showcases one of Hollywood's finest filmmaking teams in vintage form. [Rotten Tomatoes] - Spielberg has come up with another rousing piece of entertainment. [New York Daily News] - The sustained furore of humour, visual panache and headlong momentum makes for dazzling cinema. All of which makes it possibly Spielberg's most underrated film.
