THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK The film centres on the aging four musketeers, Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan, during the reign of King Louis XIV. Athos (John Malkovich) swears vengeance after despotic King Louis XIV (Leonardo DiCaprio) causes the death of his son. Summoning his old comrades Porthos (Gerard Depardieu) and Aramis (Jeremy Irons), he hatches a plan to liberate a shackled prisoner rumoured to be the king's twin brother, and then install him on the throne. But the three musketeers must also contend with their old friend D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne), who has remained in the king's service. Despite receiving a rather mixed critical response, the film was successful, benefiting greatly from Leonardo DiCaprio's post-Titanic popularity, and the film has an 82% five-star rating on Amazon! - It's both an enjoyable story and a visual wonder. See it at least twice! [IMDb] - I love this movie. I never understand why it doesn't receive the wonderful reviews it deserves. The actors are stellar, the storyline is great, and the script is fun, funny, sad, angering, and exciting, and envelops you in a period piece without being overdone. What else do you want [Rotten Tomatoes] - There's just too much great stuff here for this version of the Dumas story to be summarily dismissed, and I for one am happy to keep shouting its praises 20 years after its original release. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM In 1961, George Balanchine realised his own dream by choreographing a full-length production of A Midsummer Night's Dream to music by Mendelssohn -his well-known music to the other play and other works. As Balanchine himself put it, 'The story of the ballet, of course, concerns the adventures and misadventure of a group of mortals and immortals in their resolutions of the confusions and problems of loving and being loved. It is called a 'dream' because of the unrealistic happenings that occur to the characters, real yet unreal events such as crossed loves, meaningless quarrels, forest chases and magic spells woven by the infamous Puck. I think it's possible to see and enjoy the ballet without knowing the play. At least that was my hope in creating the piece. - Excellent performance of a Balanchine masterpiece. Alessandra Ferri is a pleasure to watch as Titania. [Dancing Times] - A truly satisfying evening at the ballet and, to misquote Puck, these shadows did not offend, and we gave them our hands with much pleasure. [Gramilano] - Everything about this production was simply stunning! Truly some of the most beautiful costumes I have ever seen!! It's a social comedy in which a glamorous American divorcee, Larita (Jessica Biel), meets and impetuously marries a young Englishman, John Whittaker (Ben Barnes), at the Monaco Grand Prix. When they return to England, his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) takes an immediate and strong dislike to her daughter-in-law, while his father (Colin Firth) finds a kindred spirit and Family tensions escalate as she and her daughters make it their mission to drive her away from the family fold. - A fine cast makes sure Noel Coward's champagne remains bubbly in Easy Virtue, an effervescent entertainment.
