Street Kids

You know you have lived in bulawayo too long when the street kids call you by your christian name and they were the kids of the street kids you knew as a child !!

'Clever' was my favourite street kid. Clever used to hang out in the back of a smart 4x4 truck in Jason Moyo avenue along with a number of other young lads. (I often wondered whose car it was, was it the street kid's car or do they get free seating in exchange for guarding this rather nice motoring piece )

The other street kids all used to know that I only deal with Clever and they would leave me alone and didn't bother me in the least.

Clever lived up to his name, he was innovative, bright and friendly without being pushy. He had the bright idea of 'purloining' a can of black shoe polish and would buff your tyres really nice and black if you let him.

In fact his name should have been "Colgate" because he had a set of dentures a film star would be proud of. No dentist would ever have needed to go anywhere near Clever's magnificent molars.

Clever did not want to be a street kid, he at least had aspirations unlike some of the others. He would have liked a permanent job and a little esteem in the community.

Jayjay on the other hand was a confirmed street kid, he liked the buzz of the bulawayo CBD but he also has a great passion for cricket. hence his favourite job touting location used to be outside Queens Cricket grounds during those halcyon days when we would watch our boys in red hitting sixes and the like around that magnificent venue.

Jayjay would deftly park his clients in nice shady locations and then hop into the back of a strategically parked truck and watch cricket through the fence, for five magic days.

Jayjay was a direct descendant of the young street kid we all knew way back in the seventies, called Sixpence.

Where Sixpence is now I have no idea but I fear he fell into a crowd with bad habits and went the way of most traditional street kids.

Not all street kids were bad, not all of them sniffed glue and drank meths according to the media, some of them deserve a break in life, and there are organisations who are endeavouring thank goodness to give these lads a second chance.

Hopefully I won't have to see Sixpences grandchildren guarding my car sometime in the years to come and that good fortune will favour these young men.

However with the recent introduction of the parking fine attendants, what has happened to the car guards in the CBD there are no cars to guard now!!

WATCHDOG
I don't know a lot about Wooty, other than I have copy of his book 'Cooking With Wooty'. I grew up in Rhodesia and my family moved to South Africa in '79, when I was 11

Years later, in 1997, I moved to Winchester in the UK. We lived opposite an 11th Century church, called St. John in the Soke. About 3 months after we moved in, the vicar invited my wife and I to Sunday lunch and I learnt he was buried in the church yard, having been a very active member of the local community.

2) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Marge Watkins went to be with the Lord on January 10 2023.
A memorial service and tea will be held for Marge:-
on Thursday 16 February
at 10.00 am
at the Garden Park Community Centre.

My young brother, Roy Garden (61), passed away late Friday night after surviving for over two years with Stage 4 Cancer. Roy was a determined guy who never gave up and tried every trick in the book in an effort to delay the inevitable progress of that dreaded affliction. He spent his last two weeks at my home in Harare where he could listen to and watch the wonderful birdlife and views that we are blessed to have.

Roy spent the majority of his life in Bulawayo being schooled at Hillside Junior and then Hamilton. With just 4 O levels to his name, Roy will not be remembered for any scholarly highlights: whilst us 3 siblings were all teachers pets in the classroom, Roy was out there smacking cricket balls all over the park. He was 9 years younger than me so I, as the big brother, spent a lot of time watching him play his various sports. He believed that no-one is born better than you at anything - if you are determined and focused, you can be the best in the world - he ended up as the effective world champion at Lawn Bowls by winning the Gold Medal for Zimbabwe at the Kuala Lumpar Commonwealth Games in 1998

Roy was very instrumental in giving me belief that I too could, if I put my mind to it, do well at sport.

His sporting prowess started early in life with colours for soccer and cricket in Standard 4 (grade 6) followed by 4 more in grade 7; Rhodesia U 15 Soccer; and, more colours at High School. He was very tall (6'4") so he learnt how to do the Fosbury Flop winning the Interschools High Jump with a Matabeleland schools record that was unbeaten for over 20 years. In the early years he represented Matabeleland in Cricket and Basketball with National Colours for Squash, Athletics and Bowls.

Overall Roy was a feisty guy who could turn on the charm when necessary but never thought of losing as an option in the sporting arena. The cricketing fraternity were well aware of this and their constant taunts when he was batting would often result in him launching a smattering of 6s all around the park. It was sometime in his twenties, however, that he decided that Bowls was the sport for him dedicating most of his time in the pursuit of excellence. He won his first Zimbabwe Singles when he was 29 and his last (6th ) much later just a few months before being diagnosed with Lung and liver cancer. Over the Years Roy represented Zimbabwe many times at World Bowls, World Masters and the All Africa Games

His funeral will be held this coming Wednesday 25th January at 2.30pm at Highlands Presbyterian Church. Friends, family and sporting colleagues are all invited to join us for the service with memorial drinks shortly afterwards at Highlands Sports club. He leaves behind his ever-loving life time partner, Les Peinke. Just before he died I sang him my favourite for the occasion Seasons in the Sun - I urge his friends to listen to it now. MHDSRIP.

There will be a memorial service for Roy at the MacDonalds Club in Bulawayo this Friday 27th January at 2.30 pm. Condolence messages can be sent to Les on 0773-111101.

Mike Garden.

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk

THURSDAYS 26 JANUARY & 2 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. PRIME SUSPECT
Prime Suspect was recently voted top of the list in a Daily Telegraph review of the Top Twenty British Crime Dramas - ahead of even Line of Duty! The first series aired in 1991 and, 'with her alcoholism and doomed love-life, Lynda La Plante's anti-heroine DCI Jane Tennison was a flawed figure. Brought to life by the mighty Helen Mirren, she was all the more magnetic for it. In the male-dominated Met, she fought her way up the ladder by solving grisly murders. Don't call her "Ma'am", call her "Guv".'

- Plenty of crime dramas feature a beleaguered, hard-drinking detective with questionable social skills, but Prime Suspect was revolutionary in making a woman the protagonist. The award-winning series starred Helen Mirren as DCI (later DS) Jane Tennison and she's never been better. [Guardian]
- Fabulous, a truly stunning grab-you-by-the-throat TV experience. [Newsday]
- Helen Mirren is terrific - hard-boiled but never macho; always suggesting a sort of bitter humour. Prime Suspect is wonderfully tense entertainment. [Entertainment Weekly]
- Helen Mirren delivers a powerful performance as do the supporting actors. Five stars to Helen Mirren, five stars to Prime Suspect character actors, the writers and directors. [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 27 JANUARY AT 6.30 P.M. DANIEL BARENBOIM
Daniel Barenboim turned 80 last November and, as a belated celebration of his birthday, here's a concert in which he conducts and plays Mozart, recorded in 2006 at the theatre in Prague where 'Don Giovanni' was first performed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth.
Programme: Symphony No. 35 in D Major, 'Haffner' Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat Major - Horn Concerto No. 1 in D Major - Symphony No. 36 in C Major, 'Linz'
- Venue, orchestra and conductor/soloist make this DVD virtually self-recommending, there is much wise and compelling music-making to savour here. (Gramophone)
- There's a suitably festive feel.. (MusicWeb International)
- Barenboim's magic touch is much in evidence in his playing of the Piano Concerto No 22. So fine it's exquisite. The man is a multi-talented genius. [Amazon]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

FRIDAY 3 FEBRUARY AT N.B. 5.30 P.M. ROSSINI: SEMIRAMIDE [first performed on 3 February 1823]
Semiramide was first performed two hundred years ago on 3 February 1823, an epic about royal assassination and misdirected lust in the ancient Babylonian empire. It was Rossini's last, longest and most elaborate work for the Italian stage before he moved to Paris later in the year. The overture is very well known, the opera much less so but it is strong and melodious work which was staged at the Met with what at the time many considered the definitive cast, led by Marilyn Horne and June Anderson.
- This performance is quite magnificent and is unlikely to be equalled any time soon. Highest recommendation. [Amazon]
- The opera receives a musically sumptuous performance. James Conlon conducts with discipline and brio that make the three-and-a-half hours seem short. His cast includes three distinguished bel-canto specialists and all are on top form. [Los Angeles Times]
- This recording does justice to a Rossini masterpiece. I cannot imagine how a cast such as assembled here can again be matched. [Opera]
- Fantastic singing by all the major singers.. A jewel to be enjoyed for a lifetime. [Gramophone]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

THURSDAY 9 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. SILENT MOVIE
In this dialogue-free slapstick comedy, film director Mel Funn (Mel Brooks) travels to the ailing Big Picture Studios to pitch his comeback film: the first feature-length silent movie in many years. Desperate for a hit, the studio chief (Sid Caesar) gives Funn and his cronies, Eggs (Marty Feldman) and Bell (Dom DeLuise), the go-ahead -- but only if they can get big celebrities to act in it. Funn begins an adventure across the country in his effort to secure superstars for his film - including Anne Bancroft, James Caan, Burt Lancaster, Marcel Marceau, Liza Minnelli and Paul Newman!
- Stylistically audacious and infectiously nostalgic for the dawn of cinema, Silent Movie is another comedic triumph for Mel Brooks... now shush. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- A marvellously silly, good-natured comedy. [United Press International]
- Brooks has taken a considerably stylistic risk and pulled it off triumphantly. [Chicago Sun-Times]
- A virtually uninterrupted series of smiles. [The New York Times]
- A 90 minutes laugh. Definitely worth watching. Enjoy it! [Amazon]
