Boomers!! Do you remember those teenage days when we had hunger The Aching, The craving, The Hunger to hear a particular song from the hit parade
Ha! you thought I was going to launch into something deep and meaningful didn't you
But when we were teenagers trust me it was deep and meaningful to be able to hear that number one song at the top of the hit parade!! Nowadays there is no such longing needed. One hops onto the internet and downloads the latest desired modern style 'seven single' - the cut, the rapsong, the medley, and now its not only the audio song, you get the visuals as well in the video!!
We used to have to wait a week to hear a particular top ten song, until the next Hit Parade on Saturday morning!! If we were extremely lucky we might have enough pocket money to persuade Mom to take us down to Spin-a-long to buy a seven single of the treasured song, but that was pretty unlikely!! After all, we were the Baby Boomers - babies born after World War 2 when money was tight!! Not to be wasted on music!!
We had in our house, I remember them well, an album of L.P.s of 'Annie Get Your Gun',. an L.P. of 'Oklahoma' and one seven single 'Oh Mein Papa' and that was it!!
I can sing them all word perfect to this day as thats all we had apart from the radio! Our majestic radio was made of beautiful inlaid wood, a family heirloom, and was the size of a kitchen hob!! Turntable on the left, radio on the right with numerous dials, and underneath were the copious shelves for the three records!!
Saturday mornings were sacrosanct when at 10. 30 I think, were the Lyons Maid Hits of the week! Oh Martin Locke, aka Cocky Locky, Oh Mike Westcott, Oh Ralph Glover, you were our heroes.
Goodness me in the sixties, how we swooned over music by the Beatles, Cliff Richard, Petula Clark, The Seekers, the Byrds and the Hollies. Remember
Four Jacks and a Jill One of their hits was 'Master Jack', adored by every single teenager in our glorious, tiny, innocent world!!
Quite sad that the modern teenager expects instant gratification in all spheres, and they might never experience that glorious feeling of anticipation and 'Longing'.
