The Gauteng Grand Prix!

HeeHoo and I were in S.A. recently, ambling casually towards our car after a most successful shopping trip (I love shopping at Cresta Shopping Centre in Northcliffe!)

Correction - I was ambling contentedly, but HeeHoo was mumbling grumpily about my inordinate ability to shop, saying disparaging things about the parcels he was carrying. Of course I totally ignored him !! Nothing has changed in our shopping trips for 45 years!!

Suddenly a tremendous commotion broke out in the basement garage!! At least 17 motor bikes roared into life and sped deafeningly past us in a furious wave!! It reminded me of the start of the Moto GPs that HeeHoo watches avidly.

Either that or the 'Ton-Up Boys' were heading off on their travels or possibly a bank heist maybe even an insurrection or bikers warfare (I have a very fertile imagination!!)

Each bike had a large carrier box on the back and we realised, with some relief, that it was in fact the Checkers Sixty60 crew shooting off en masse to deliver their goods in the area, within sixty minutes as promised!!

Since Covid, deliveries of food and produce has increased exponentially, none more so that in South Africa. Every food outlet now has a plethora of delivery bikes lined up outside their premises, waiting for orders of pizzas, curries, burgers and fries!!

Woe betide you if you are in the vicinity of a Pizza Inn when the rugby starts..

One door closes and another opens. Covid wrought many difficulties, thousands of folk suddenly were out of work, but just as quickly, thousands of people found jobs!!

Delivery - the new way to shop, the new way to dine, and suddenly thousands of people were employed, thousands of motor bikes and bikes were purchased, and a strange new lifestyle emerged for countless people worldwide.

Hair Days continued

Had to reply to your Hair Days item. You never mentioned the days of large clusters of curls on top of one's head, which were stuffed with panties of socks each night with a scarf over and you hoped the style would survive the night!! I used to wash my hair at nit and sleep with a headful of spiky pink curlers, how I ever slept I do not know.

As the years galloped on and kiddies came, fancy hairdo's became a thing of the past, however one did become very close to ones hairdresser, then as retirement loomed the hairdresser retired and the hunt was one for a new one. I have a complete classic here in Umkomaas, her name is Venus, her salon is right on the beach, you lie at the basin having a wash and the view is spectacular you could well believe you were on Santorini. Venus is in love with anything Polynesian, so her decor is very Bali. She is 70 but still working, her conversation is a mixture of Afrikaans and English, which she switches about with abandon. Don't go to Venus if you just want a quick cut, it is more like a morning event, with her stopping to greet the fishermen or divers who pass her door, rushing out to pat a passing dog, handing out food to beggars an passing on the local skinner. She is one of a kind and I just love my monthly visits.
