The Antique Fridge

Many Zimbabweans have a dedicated 'beer' fridge. That one fridge that keeps the beer at exactly the right temperature. Whether it be Castle Light, Pilsener, Black Label or Windhoek, they all taste better coming straight from Granny's Fridge.

Now said fridge could be bordering on antiquity, Mom bought it before I was born!!

Hidden behind the door in the utility room, this dear old clangorous Lady has worked non stop since the day she was made, probably came from England on a ship - Grand Old Electrolux.!!

She has a tiny weeny ice compartment containing two dangerous metal ice trays and a thick green glass drip tray (no automatic defrosting back in the day!!) Her original thermostat died many years ago, but somehow she has hobbled on, never faltering, just like Grandfather's Clock!!

Certainly not the oldest fridge in the world - 'The Yakhchal' still exists today, this 2,500-Year-Old Ancient Persian Refrigerator dates back to 400 BC!

As kids we would stay with our Great Aunty Poppy and Uncle George at the Gaika Mine in Que Que, and they had a fridge that comprised water running over a large cold rock, in a cool breezy space, and the food was encased in fine mesh to keep the flies out.

It's amazing how we take refrigeration for granted. We are the lucky ones who can afford a fridge and who have electricity. I remember as young marrieds, we would camp at Tashinga in the Matusadona for ten days. Our cooling method was to manoeuvre the Joubert's massive old deceased electrolux, jam packed with dry ice, on and off the Desmond Ferry, up the banks of the river and into the shade of our 'campsite'.

Camping in those days ment one took absolutely everything, even to the extent of digging a long drop!! National Parks provided a brick braai area (sans grill of course) and some magnificent shady trees. Many a laugh ensued getting this monstrosity of a cooler box from the Desmond to the bank which almost resulted in the muddy demise of one of our key campers!!

Viva Granny's Fridge!!

We are kindly requesting on behalf of women in our community from willing member for the donation of potatoes and oranges empty bags. People after using the contents they tend to throw away the empty bags as garbage. Our community women have identified a way to re-use and recycle these bags making stylish carry bags. While recycling, the project also creates employment for local women by making embroidered plastic bags, clutch bags, beach bags, toiletry bags, table mats, etc.

We really appreciate your efforts and trust that you can read and perhaps can pass it along to the members who wish to contribute for this good cause, anything that goes along to make the project a success will be greatly appreciated even scraps of fabric for the inside lining, button zippers, fasteners.
