Once-in-a-blue-moon new year
Some of our family members spent New Year at Binga-by-the-Sea!!
It was a glorious fishing trip interspersed with great moments of family fun, camaraderie and mosquitoes !!
Power is a luxury at Binga, but there is no shortage of boats, sun, swimming and good friends and the Binga Community gathered together to see the New Year in in fine style with a pig on a spit and some fabulous salads and champers.
The moon shone brilliantly throughout most of the night, very little else was necessary in the way of light but although we all marveled at the man in the moon and the glorious night sky, few of us knew that it was in fact a "Blue Moon" !!
For only the second time in nearly two decades, December ended with Earth illuminated by a "blue moon," the name given to the second full moon appearing in a single month.
Not since 1990 had the world had the opportunity to observe on a mass scale the compounded impact of a blue moon and New Year's Eve.
The double full moon phenomenon happens on average every 2.7 years, with the most recent in May 2007 and the next set for August 2012.
Last month, the moon was also at its maximum on Dec. 2.
According to the StarPhoenix it turns out that the term "blue moon" is a misnomer that can be traced back to an editorial blooper 65 years ago in the normally irreproachable magazine Sky and Telescope.
A "blue moon" is also used colloquially to mean "a rare event", especially in the phrase "once in a blue moon".
Thank you to the hospitable Binga folk who made us so welcome at New Year.
