Near Death Experiences

HeeHoo always arrives home for lunch fuming, he regales me with his trips to and from the office, gesticulating wildly and using choice language, which is not normally in his nature. I have to wait until he calms down before I can give him his favourite soup.

Why ?
Because every trip he makes to and from work is filled with N.D.E.s (Near Death Experiences) In a journey of about five kilometres he, and everyone else in Zimbabwe, encounter the most incredible driving, probably comparable to the worst in the world.

The law does not exist on our roads anymore. Its tantamount to flagrant defiance and culpable behaviour.

Traffic lights are flouted, stop signs are disregarded, white lines are ignored. It's a shocking and criminal state of affairs and the police are helpless, it would appear, to be able to take control.

The other day, returning from the airport at night, we counted no less than forty vehicles with no lights at all, or only one light. It was a hazardous trip to say the least, especially as they had all come through the police roadblock that is always situated near the Umguza Bridge. We personally watched them being waved through the roadblock, vehicles with only one headlight working, often no tail lights at all.

Why are they not impounded there and then

The death rate on the roads surely must be causing concern, we personally know three people who have been killed on Zimbabwe roads recently.
