ZIMBABWE NATIONAL SPCA APPEAL

The Zimbabwe National SPCA (ZNSPCA) remains operational and has recently been instrumental in the rescue of animals in two shocking cases. In each instance, animals had been left to starve. Both cases will result in prosecutions which means that the ZNSPCA will need to care for all these animals in the interim. Yet the situation in Zimbabwe remains dire: the ZNSPCA land lines remain out of order and a bag of dog food costs 4 trillion dollars (400 "new dollars").
An urgent appeal is made for the support of the ZNSPCA through the ZIMHELP scheme, operated by and through the National Council of SPCAs in South Africa.
The first case was a race-horse training facility housing 6 horses. The second was a security company housing over 300 dogs. With the full co-operation of the Zimbabwe Police, the horses were impounded. Sadly two of them, Summer Ford and Dutch Ski, had to be euthanized as they were so diseased that it was not humane to keep them alive.

110 dogs were confiscated from a security company. ZNSPCA Inspectors are camped on site to ensure the welfare of the remaining animals. Of the impounded animals, 18 had to be euthanized immediately to prevent further suffering. Some of the dogs were so weak that they could not stand.

Despite the current dire social and economic situation in Zimbabwe, the public has been generous with donations of hay, shavings, dog and horse food. The upkeep of two of the former racehorses has been sponsored by two caring individuals.

Appreciation is expressed to the SPCA in Harare for providing a kennel block where the animals in the most pitiful condition can be cared for.

These two cases are shocking. Thank goodness there remains an active SPCA movement in Zimbabwe whose staff remain alert to cases of cruelty or neglect and who continue to act in the best interests of animals of all species. This despite the dire overall situation in Zimbabwe: - the number of animals being brought in for euthanasia increasing as an inevitable result of the economy. Few can afford to feed pets as a bag of dog food - if available - costs more than the minimum monthly wage. The cost of any form of veterinary care, including sterilization is prohibitive, adding to the burden of the SPCA in Zimbabwe.

The ZNSPCA in conjunction with Harare and Bulawayo SPCAs has embarked on a sterilization programme. It is foolhardy for owners to breed their animals under the current circumstances yet desperate individuals have tried to sell puppies on the roadside. Inspectors impound puppies on a daily basis.

If you can help, please contribute to the ZIMHELP scheme:

The Secret to Life for Kids
I will be holding more courses later these holidays for children of all ages covering, positive thinking, goal setting and self esteem. There will be a special course for grade 7's writing exams next term to help them deal with the stresses of exams and to help them to have a positive outlook on their future success. If anyone is interested in attending please e-mail me with your child's name and age and I will get back to you asap. I will be away until the 18 August.

Thanks, Paula Lowe blowe@mweb.co. zw

ZNSPCA
are once again appealing for assistance to feed over 110 dogs that have been put into our custody by the Zimbabwe Republic Police pending a Court Case for charges of animal cruelty. We originally had over 50 dogs but unfortunately more dogs are now starving, resulting in our involvement once again.
We appreciate all the assistance offered to us since our last appeal, without which we could not have catered for the needs of the animals in our care. We are unsure as to how long the Court case will take, but will keep the public informed on its' progress. Some of the animals are under veterinary attention and may not recover from the abuse that they have suffered.

The dogs under veterinary attention are being housed at Harare SPCA, the remainder of the animals are "on site". In order to protect the remainder, ZNSPCA Inspectors are camping at the premises and taking care of the dogs.

Once again, any donation, no matter how small, will be appreciated by both us and the animals.

Please contact our offices for further information in this regard - on cell numbers 0912 335 464 and 011 630 403

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES

We at Khami Enterprises believe that it is time that we again take pride in our nation Zimbabwe and our being Zimbabweans. For too long now we have tended to concentrate day to day operations - something understandable as it is to levels of mere survival that we have forced to operate. We believe now is the time to rise up again and present ourselves as a proud nation and a patriotic and capable people.

For this reason we have been considering launching something in the line of a "PROUDLY ZIMBABWE" campaign. This needs to become a national one whose logo could be used on both government and corporate products, letterheads and even geographical signage. Yes I guess we may have been influenced to a degree by the very successful "Proudly South African" campaign but we feel it needs to go further than a marketing issue. We must also be wary of merely copying their idea and applying here in Zimbabwe. That would be too easy and would suggest that we are mere underlings to "the evil Soooth".

In our discussions with various people in and around Bulawayo we believe that there is an interest in this scheme and we would like to drive it forward. I am looking at several sketches that we have thrown together but am more than aware that such a campaign needs to have much wider consultations and buy-in. For this reason I am emailing you all to ask your thoughts as to what we can do if anything? I would be great to exchange ideas by email and come up with a few more definitive ideas. We can then meet to work it. We would be happy to host such a meeting at our premises.

Our idea is something like "Go ZIM Go" or something like that. The use of the flag and the bird might be key elements. The question is colour and getting it design to be eye- catching and above all contemporary. The SA use of a central green tick in their logo says a lot about the motivation behind their campaign. Could we create something.

I would be very grateful for your thoughts and any assistance you can offer. Please feel free to pass on this email to others who you think might be interested. If you want to chat my cell is 011-366593 and landline at work 09-63066.

Rob Burrett

Re: Visas for USA on British and other passports that previously allowed entry into USA on a Visa Waiver programme.

As from 01 Aug these passport holders must access an Authorisation to Travel to the United States (ESTA) via the Internet and it is recommended that customers apply for it on a voluntary basis to familiarise themselves with the new system before it becomes compulsory from early 2009. This online Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) must be applied for no less than 72 hours before departure and will replace the previous green visa waiver form ( 194W) which would have been completed on board the aircraft enroute to the USA. In most cases a response will be received within seconds if authorisation is granted. If not granted then a visa will have to be applied for from the US Embassy. An approved authorisation is valid for 2 years for multiple entries.
The web site to access this authorisation is https:esta.cbp.dhs.gov

Pets

we lost our beautiful Black Bouvier two weeks ago, and it was really distressing, and her two year old male pup is howling for her at night, and pining horribly. I just wanted to find out if anyone has one for us or is breeding.... we don't even mind homing one who's owners may be leaving, it would be great for us, and nice for people not having to put pets down. Bouvier Wanted We recently lost our beautiful Bouvier Female Dog when she was ill, and have a two year old male pup of hers, who is missing her terribly and very lonely. We would be very grateful if anyone could assist us in finding a friend for him. We would like another Bouvier male or female for a companion for him. Should you be able to help us,

please call:- Lorraine on 233556 or (0912) 246121. E-Mail:- pridgeon@yoafrica. com

We would seek the help of the Rhodesian-Zimbabwea n Community in helping track someone down.

We have received the following email. A child in California needs a bone marrow transplant within a few days and it seems the only possibility is from his grandfather who at one time was in Rhodesia.

"I am looking for information as to the whereabouts of one James Alan Smith. Mr. Smith, born in London UK, accompanied his parents to Rhodesia as a young man in 1949. Mr. Smith would be in his 76th year now. He was known to attend the 1986 World's Fair in Vancouver, Canada. His family resided in an area now known as Chadcombe,(a suburb of Salisbury?), for about 5 years. His father was a member of a British Trade Commission, probably involved in the tobacco industry. His parents returned to England in 1965. He married and stayed in Rhodesia for some time. It is believed that Mr. Smith attended undergraduate Engineering classes at the University of Zimbabwe. However my several queries to the Administration Office of the University of Zimbabwe have gone unanswered. He may have been enrolled in another College or University in or around Salisbury. Were there any other Colleges in Rhodesia in the early 1950s? He may have belonged to a Fraternity or given his education credentials on a license or job application. Excepting his parents, now deceased, Mr. Smith had no relatives in Africa. He does, however, have a grandchild in California who desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. Mr. Smith is the closest living kin and the Doctors say the best chance for lifesaving "match".

If anyone has any information, however small, about Mr. Smith, the Schools or businesses with which he was connected, that information would be most helpful. Of course, time is very much of the essence!
Thank you

Good Afternoon,

I have just heard from a business associate of the tragic death of Chris Strydom and found the condolence notice in your publication (issue 7/11/2004).

Charmaine and I worked together for many years and we became friends before the family moved back to Zimbabwe. We lost touch and we were thus unaware of the tragedy until yesterday. Is there any way that you would have a contact number for Charmaine or that you could forward a mail to her? I am desperate to contact her and the boys.

Many thanks and regards,
Cheryl Stopforth nee Paul. 0827734961 m: sales@upss.co. za

I have tried everything to find the Hilton Barber family, Craig is an artist, my husband and I had him spend time with us on his first trip in the US and we visited him and his family, we have been so concerned about them, I also needed to tell them that Don (my husband) has been diagnosed with terminal leukemia, he wants so much to get in touch with Guy, Craig, and so far I haven't been able to give him that,
if you could possibly help. this is our email griff3542@aol. com also griffithsgallery@ gmail.com

This is from Frank Noble, present Pipe Major of the Bulawayo Pipe band, still living in Bulawayo! I joined in March 1956. The band was originally formed by the Caledonian Society only later becoming a private company. I have all the drums and drum majors mace and most of band kit as well as minutes of the band from it's inception. I played at the funerals of Erenie Cox, Murray Reid, both tenor drummers.

I would love to hear from ex members of the band

I am looking for my brother Donald HARRIS
whom I have not had contact with for years,

The last time that I had contact with him he was residing in a backpackers lodge on the Queens Road. It was not far from the intersection where Grey Street and the other main road out of the city centre joined, but before you got down to traffic circle (?). The premises may have been a crèche many years ago. I think his partner at the time was running the lodge. I know he was a frequenter of the BESL Club in Main Street/6th Avenue.
