PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
P.O.BOX 2360 BULAWAYO
Old age or something is fast catching up! There's another event that will be of interest to many that I omitted from yesterday's newsletter.
PLANET EARTH
Wildlife and Environment Zimbabwe will be showing the first two parts of the acclaimed BBC series Planet Earth narrated by David Attenborough:
Saturday 17 May at 3.00 p.m.
Robert Sibson Hall
Admission: adults $10 000 000 - children $5 000 000 The first two installments are From Pole to Pole and Mountains and there will be an interval between the two - bring your own refreshments! The showing will end about 5.30 p.m.
These are some comments on the series:
David Attenborough: "This new series is more a celebration of our planet, not a lament about the state of it. It shows what is still there. In some areas, there is no doubt we are doing damage to our world but, at the same time, there is a vast amount of uncharted and untouched wilderness. This landmark series takes viewers to the world's highest peaks, deepest caves and most remote deserts. The footage is simply without parallel."
Alastair Fothergill, the series producer: "The power of the scenery is one of the things that has driven what we've done. But we've also gone for animals that have never been filmed, behaviours that have never been filmed, along with places that people have very rarely seen."
And the BBC itself: "Four years in the making, with a budget of unprecedented proportions, Planet Earth has stretched the boundaries of natural history television. High definition photography, revolutionary ultra-high speed cameras and detailed images from the air enabled the series to capture the most amazing footage ever seen. This stunning television experience combines rare action, unimaginable scale, impossible locations and intimate moments with our planet's best-loved, wildest and most elusive creatures. From the highest mountains to the deepest rivers, this blockbuster series takes you on an unforgettable journey through the challenging seasons and the daily struggle for survival in Earth's most extreme habitats. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty of Planet Earth." The critics seemed to agree! "Every few years we are treated to a series so compelling that it puts all other shows in the shade ... Every single second of these epic new films is a joy to behold - mind-blowing ..." Daily Mirror. "As good as you want it to be... Expect everything from underwater elephants to mountains of guano and a snow leopard in attack mode... Pure class." Guardian. A big screen will, of course, add enormously to the enjoyment of this spectacular series and the remaining episodes will follow on a regular basis later in the year. Saturday is, of course, the day of the Academy's Sing Together. We'll have tables out on the lawn for those who want to bring a picnic and stay on for Planet Earth - and we could even show a musical DVD to fill in the time if there's the demand! Best wishes as always,
MICHAEL BULLIVANT

What is more precious than fuel & water???
We all have it, but dont like to share it.... The blood banks in Byo are drying up faster than our dams and are desperate for donations.
This takes little time, and could save a loved one's life - imagine a family member dies because there is no blood to give after an accident!

Thank you to the wonderful people of Bulawayo for all the goods which have been donated. Our shelves are almost empty again so please keep bringing all your unwanted goods. All money taken at the shop goes directly to running our kennels. There is enormous pressure on the kennels and clinic in these difficult times and every little bit helps such a lot. We take anything such as books, magazines, bottles, plastic bottles, HTH bottles, records, patterns, ornaments, pictures, picture frames, cutlery, crockery, newspapers, costume jewelry, used cards, electrical appliances dead or alive, clothing, games, games equipment, jam jars, in fact anything you do not want we can make use of. We are situated between 14th and 15th Avenues, Robert Mugabe Way. Tel 69814, shop hours 9am -12pm and 2pm - 4pm except Monday mornings, Saturday morning 9am - 11am. Thank you for keeping our shop going. We have a mini trampoline/rebounde r, cuttle fish and a brand new Directors chair. Why not pop in and browse. We have an urgent appeal from our kennels for old newspapers.
If you have lost your pet please call the SPCA kennels. If you see an animal in distress please call the SPCA kennels. All too often we find animals run over and injured when a simple call to the SPCA could save their lives.

NEWS LETTER MAY 08
I apologize for the delay in sending out the newsletter; as I am sure many of you understand, life is rather hectic as events unfold in Zimbabwe! We still await results, more than 6 weeks after votes were cast! The economy has worsened, though we thought it was already at rock bottom, and now there is very little food or medicine available at all. The picture is very bleak!
FOOD FOR HOMES BULAWAYO
FHB is importing all of the dry goods from South Africa and Botswana for the homes, as I am sure Dave Gills from SOAP is as well, for his pensioners. We received a truckload of tinned and dry food, as well as cleaning materials, from Homes of Zimbabwe, Nigel Kay, to whom we owe a huge thank you, and also to his team, we are hoping for our next shipment shortly,. This has been an absolute godsend for both SOAP and FHB.
We would like to thank all our donors over the past few months that have helped build our account with Trade Centre, Polokwane. Craig has been doing runs to Polokwane to collect flour, oil, pasta, corn flour, rice, toilet paper, cheese, etc for the homes; this has only come about thanks to you, our donors. This has improved both the quality and the quantity of food in the homes. This last week we have been thrown another curve ball by the Zimra authorities we now have to pay the duty in Forex or Billions of zim dollars Craig paid ZW $ 75 Billion on Rand 5200-00 on groceries !!
We have a regular donor for meat - half a cow approx. every 2 weeks. This keeps our homes in meat, but to anyone wanting to boost the meat side, it would be greatly appreciated as we still need to source chickens as well. At the moment the homes are able to give 3-4 meat meals a week which is a huge improvement. We would like to thank the kind donor who is sponsoring the meat. The homes are also receiving a weekly delivery of vegetables; once again thank you to Homes of Zimbabwe for covering this cost, and thank you to Tim & Helen White who source the most amazing veggies - the homes are really grateful as their residents were getting rather tired of cabbage.
FHB is in desperate need of a walk-in freezer to store donations of meat as well as surplus veggies, which can be frozen. Thank you to Colin and Sharon Bristow for their very generous donation towards the freezer; this has got the ball rolling. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances in our country, we have had to cancel our fundraiser, which the Golden Spur was going to host for us. Anyone able to help with the building or purchase of the freezer, please contact Craig on 011633767 or the above numbers or email.
SCS/MRLHF
MEDICATIONS: These are becoming very hard to source as well as increasingly expensive. Many of the life saving drugs are now unavailable and we are having to source them from South Africa. A big thank you to Edmund De Beer and his team from Tzaneen, who have sourced and transported these vital medications for us from South Africa; many of our Pensioners would have died by now if it were not for these drugs. We are always looking for ways to bring in these vital drugs, though transport is proving quite problematic! Dr Legg has received many donations of vitamins from SCI blue bags as well as other donors, and we would just like to thank all those people that have donated either in cash or kind.
GLASSES: These have gone up, the same as everything else, and we are struggling to keep up with the demand for glasses as the medical aids give less and less. Thank you once again to McMinn Optometrists, for seeing many of our Pensioners for free, and helping us with reduced-price glasses. Michelle, it is amazing what you can pull out the hat for us, and, to the staff, thank you for your patience!
DENTISTRY: This has become extremely expensive. We desperately need more finances for dentures, etc. Many of our pensioners cannot eat properly due to dental problems, which are affecting their health, but the costs are so huge that we cannot cover as many as we would like to.
CLINICS: Dr Legg is now running 2 clinics every week instead of every fortnight, due to the increase of Pensioners needing medical help. This is due to the Doctors wanting cash up front. A consultation fee of 1,3 million is beyond most Pensioners, whose pensions are probably not more than $500,000!!! We have set up a permanent clinic at A5 Coronation cottages which Dr Legg uses every week to see the Pensioners, and the other clinic is still held at Rhodes Jubilee. Thank you to Dr Legg, who is amazing with these old people, and to Beryl, our Nurse Aide, for her patience and empathy. Dr Legg believes in prevention rather than cure and feeds vitamins to our Pensioners, which have had a huge impact on their health, so to those who have donated vitamins, know that they have been put to good use - thank you and please keep sending them!
EMRAS: The ambulance costs have increased dramatically over the last quarter, ($ 6,5 million to $ 1,5 billion), and are set to go up again due to increases in fuel prices. We would like to thank Esther and her Staff at Emras for the wonderful way they treat our pensioners and also for the reduced cost! This is a vital service; one we cannot do without!
HOSPITAL: An emergency fund has recently been put in place, and for this we say a grateful thanks to our sponsor; without this many pensioners would not be admitted and treated.
Also, a documentary was filmed at the beginning of this year by Catherine Sergeant, Australia. I know when you interviewed some of them, Catherine, you found it very hard emotionally, but you persevered, and wow, you did a fantastic job! Thank you. This documentary can be viewed on www.YouTube. com - type in Zimbabwe Ruins.

To all our Donors we say THANK YOU! Without people like you, we would not be able to do what we do. Thank you for helping us to help the Old People!!
Many of you have probably received the letter my daughter, Tanya, wrote, and it is from that letter I take this quote:
"Fear of Change is fear of the Future, and if we fear the Future we will remain stuck in the Past. Now is the time for Change. Now is the dawn of the Future. And I... I am not afraid. No, I am not afraid."
I hope we can all adopt the same attitude and bring about change. May the Angels be with you all!

HILLSIDE DAMS
Public interest in developments at the Dams has continued to flourish and large numbers of people now come out to the Dams over the weekends. This is most encouraging. Merely the numbers present has improved the security significantly, both at the Dams themselves and in the adjacent residential suburbs.

The Lower Dam still holds good water and is now home to a large number of moorhen, black crake, cormorant, white-faced duck and teal. A fish eagle was seen on the Upper Dam but has moved on again. Some restocking of the dam has been undertaken but we must stress that this dam will probably be empty again with the onset of the dry season - and when it does we will try get in to investigate and deal with the cause of the leaks.

On the gardens, things have not gone as fast as we might have hoped. Labour costs and direction remains an issue. We hope to have someone permanently there in a supervisory position soon. We take this opportunity to thank Mr. & Mrs P. te Velde for their kind efforts in coming to assist with the gardening as and when they could. We hope that they will continue in their efforts despite the frustrations; we really need their knowledge and dedication. Thanks also to Mr Mills, the Spooner family and Mr Dakin for assistance in cutting the grass which responded quickly to the early rains.

The lantana below the Upper Dam is being tackled, while the Aloe Garden is steadily being cleared and replanted. Care is however being taken so that the aloes are not disturbed unduly to ensure that we have a good flowering season later in the year. Several exotic trees have been felled and we must thank Beaver Tree Felling for the donation of time and expertise. Not everyone will be happy with the demise of the Jacaranda, Phyotlacca and Norfolk Pines but we assure you that many other Indigenous trees have already been planted in their place.

Re-licensing of the tearoom is still with Bulawayo City Council and we apologise to all of those who come to the Dams hoping that something is in place. It will be ready within a month as it is due to be discussed at the next full council meeting of the BCC.
The Banff Road entrance is being transformed as a rustic guardhouse is erected. A second guardhouse will soon go up at the Impala Road entrance. Our sincere thanks to MacAlisters, Davis Granite, MacDonald's Bricks and United Portland cement who have made this possible. Two booms are being fabricated by Nimr & Chapman and thanks to them.

The old braai area has been restored and several additional benches and tables have been put in place thanks to the Ewing family. It is proving again to a popular weekend venue. Please remember to bring your own wood and remove all litter.
The toilets near the tearoom are being refurbished. Doors are in place and the plumbing is being repaired and facilities upgraded. We are thankful to Mr. & Mrs R. Lasker and Bathroom Vogue for their facilitating this. The toilets will be locked at times other than the weekends but keys can be obtained at the office or from one of our staff. We still need some help with the roof, paint and toilet consumables. If you can assist please contact us.

When the guard gates are in place we will make a small entry charge to cover part of our running costs. This is not designed to exclude anyone. The rates will be reasonable and the modalities are still being discussed. We will let you know well in advance. Initially it will cover cars, relying on your good will for donations to cover people and use of facilities. Entrance cards for a 6 monthly and annual basis will be available. We would in fact prefer that people take up this option for reasons of ease and security. Senior citizens will be exempt and we need to decide on how their entrance cards are distributed. If you have any comments and suggestions on these matters please let us know.

We must ask that people respect the rules of the area. Signs are presently being put in place. However existing BCC rules continue to apply - no dogs off their leash near the tearoom; no fishing in the Lower Dam; no swimming and boating; no radios; no cars on the grass, littering etc. Please can you book beforehand for any functions. This can be done through the office on 242490 or by email. Bookings need to be done well ahead of time so other users can fit it in and get the necessary police clearance. Donations for the use of the area for these functions would be much appreciated. This would apply to parties, church gatherings and society meetings. We are not trying to hinder your visits just avoid unnecessary conflicts and have it safe.

Remember that fishing this is restricted to the Upper Dam. We have had advice from John Minshull, our fish expert, who says that the current off take is not a problem and that there are ample fish to cope. We may however have to put some sections of the shoreline off-limits for the wild birds and breeding. Please note that there is a daily fee for fishing payable at the office or to our staff who go around with the receipt book.

On the topic one lucky fisherman recently hauled in a massive carp after a fight of 21 minutes. He says he has seen bigger!!! He also believes that there is indeed a small crocodile in the Upper Dam so please beware.
There is still much to do and we appreciate all the assistance we are getting. We touched by the generosity of the Bulawayo community, well aware of the difficult times that we are all going through. We are still looking for a responsible person to man the office as well as any offers of garden equipment, assistance with labour, and children's play equipment.
Various external well-wishers have pledged assistance and we are very grateful for their support. The modalities will be put in place so that we can use this to procure the imported components necessary for the security fence that we require. Please let us know if you are able to assist in anyway, wherever you are. Email estate@hillsidedams .com
We are also grateful for all the support and letters of acknowledgment we have received from members of the public. It is encouraging that the people are again reclaiming this special place.

11) SEEKING FRIENDS
The reason I am writing to you is due to me surfing the web trying to find some old lost friends from the Boys Brigade movement. I have been wondering, very simply, what could I do in some small way for my old friends in Zimbabwe - if they are indeed in need of something/anything. And as I surfed through all the articles, I came across your website.
I would your help, if you could, in spelling correctly for me the name "Kulengesa". My friend James Kulengesa was a farmer outside of Hatfield and ran/volunteered as captain of a company of boys in the Christian boys movement known otherwise as the Boy's Brigade. (They are kind of like the Scouts. Very similar).
Th thing is, the net pulls up no references whatsoever with regards to Kulengesa or its correct spelling as used in Zimbabwe. Would you be able to clarify for me how "Kulengesa" might be spelled in the right way? I would be very grateful, Very best regards,
Graeme Dunn
