WHY IS THERE NO LONGER ANY MILK IN BULAWAYO ?

1) Due to the low milk price that has been in effect since 16 June 2007, Farmers are finding it difficult to purchase the stockfeeds required to maximise their milk output. Some stockfeeds don't seem to be effected by the price controls although the milk price is fixed. The Correct types of feed has also become a problem. So even if they do have the funds to purchase, some feeds are just not available. Most Dairy Farmers have taken to drying off some of their cows as they just cant feed them. I am sure we are all aware just how well our agricultural outputs are at the moment.

2) Again because of the milk price some large processors have taken to the export market, this also allows imports of various inputs. What milk is left can be put into value added products which finds a better return than fresh milk.

3) Collection of milk from the Farmers to the Processors is done by a co-operative (National Dairy Co-Op) which took over when the Dairy Marketing Board folded some years ago. They have the milk tankers and equipment for the safe handling of Raw milk. Once again due to price controls and the availability of diesel, they are finding it almost impossible to collect the milk from the Farmers. Their fleet is almost at a stand still.

4) Processors profit margins have been reduced to desperate levels over the past 18 months due to price controls, and the ever increasing costs of materials and inputs.

Unfortunately it is a very sad story for the Dairy Industry in Zimbabwe. If all the inputs were suddenly available at an affordable price, It would take at least five years for production to meet the requirements of our local market.

4) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES

It makes me really annoyed and furious when I read this ... Rhodesians ... Who the ---- is a Rhodesian ??? in this day and age ??? When are people going to realise that the country, the people have moved on ??? It's because of attitudes like that, that makes me wonder that it is no wonder that the country is in the state that it in just now. Die hard attitudes like that cause anger, bitterness, resentment and a lot more negative emotions.

Change your attitude - Change your world !!! (Change Zimbabwe ...)

NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2007

TO ALL THOSE CONCERNED FOR THE ELDERLY PEOPLE OF ZIMBABWE!

As I sit here at my computer I am actually stumped at what to write as I contemplate how much has changed since my last newsletter! We seem to be in the death throws, which is making it ever harder to source the necessary help we need for our pensioners who are the hardest hit in these trying times. Even as I sit here and look at the enormity of the situation, I have a feeling of peace flow over me telling me everything will be all right and we will be able to help those in need no matter what happens. So I am going with that thought, come on everyone be positive about the situation in our Country we will have change and together we can survive this.
SCS is now working in conjunction with MRLHF a fund set up by the Louwe family in memory of a family member. They also assist with medical needs and between the 2 we hope to be able to help many more pensioners as the need increases.

EMRAS AMBULANCE: This has become a huge life safer for many of our pensioners as they are getting used to having the security of ambulance cover. The need for this has increased considerably as more people are coming onto the books. The charge for an ambulance call is now 2,000,000 (two million dollars).

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS: SCS has working in conjunction with Peter Rollason, (who most people in Byo will remember for his comp of the Christmas carols), with the prescription medications. Mr Rollason is a retired pharmacist. He sorts out prescriptions and delivers them to our Pensioners himself on his bicycle, so that he can make sure they understand their dosages etc as well as giving support or a chat where needed. We have to say a big thank you to Mr Rollason for his time and patience. Unfortunately, we seem to have lost the Dubai connection which was a huge loss to us. If anyone knows how I can get back in touch with Dr Jackie Stone I would appreciate it if you could let me know. I think the computers are working against us on this one! At the moment we are sourcing the drugs locally but this is becoming harder and harder due to lack of currency & price freeze which is affecting supply. We would also like to try and organise to obtain the medications from South Africa, if anyone can put me in touch with a friendly doc or pharmacist again I would be grateful.

NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS & SUPPLIES: On this side I have some wonderful news. We have had 2 great donations. The first is from a young man, Chase Waller from Hilton College, Pietermaritzburg, RSA. For his final year project at school, he chose to help the elderly of Bulawayo through the SCS. This wonderful young man has sourced a huge donation of medical supplies for us.
The bulk is sitting in Johannesburg and will be sent over a period of time to Lin Botha of
Sediba Clearing Office #3 Gateway Truck Park Beitbridge SA side Contact Lin Botha 0827875702 015 5300284/5
Anyone travelling to SA if you have room for a small box about a shoe box size please will you contact me or the BHN office, 65383 speak to Verity or Judy, for a letter so that you can collect a box from Lin on your way back, we would be very grateful. I would just like to thank Lin for her help with this.
Our 2nd big donation was from Edmund De Beer and his team who braved the border post (7 hrs) with a truck full of vitamins, medical supplies, etc for our Pensioners. They did this last year and have come through with a bigger load this year. Thank you to Ed and his team for this wonderful donation. Our Doc, Willy Legg is like a kid in a candy shop! This donation was split between the homes for medic boxes, with the bulk going to our Doc for his clinics that he runs for our Pensioners and vitamins being distributed among the elderly.

EYES: A thank you must go to Dr Beattie for the eye clinic he ran. This helped a lot of our pensioners with cataracts etc. He also had a donation box which people could put into if they felt the need. This was donated to the BHN which will be used to buy readers for our elderly. I would also like to thank John McMinn and his wonderful patient staff who help deal with our pensioners on a regular basis. Special thanks to Michelle for her work and to Mathew for his kindness and understanding with them, the ladies love you!

DENTAL: Through the MRLHF and Dr Dimitri we have managed to help some of our Pensioners with dental work or dentures. This has made a huge difference to their lives as they are now eating properly. Thank you to Dr Dimitri. This is a costly exercise as the denture are extremely expensive.

Other: The MRLHF with the help of a surgeon from Cape Town, Dr Driver Jowitt, will be running a hip and knee clinic at the Mater Dei Hospital in November. He will also be coming up before to do small surgeries for our elderly. Dr Driver-Jowitt has generously donated his time for this and also sourced all the parts needed. They are now sitting in my TV lounge!! A big thankyou has to go to a team of people that made the delivery of the body parts possible, so to the following we say thank you; Lin Botha Sediba Clearing, (for custom clearance on the SA side), Brendon Sundelowitz BP freight (transported goods Jhb to Byo), Bradley Shandos, apcon (transported goods Ctown to Jhb), Ronel Farmer, Cargo Carriers (transported goods from Docter to Apcon Ctown depot) and a very special thanks to Kev Barron Cargo Carriers for co-ordinating it all. Without you we would never have done it. On the Zim side thank you to Maple Freight for Zim clearance and Beryl Odendaal for all her hard work on the paper trail!

On this issue we will be looking for assistance with medical supplies for the operations, payment of hospital fees, food for the team that will be working here (3 people, 2 surgeons and a technician), accommodation has been supplied by Southern Comfort Lodge. If anyone is able to help and would like more details please contact the BHN office, 65383 and speak to Beryl or leave a message for her or contact me.

All that is left to say is thank you to our regular donors, you are the ones that keep us going.

Mario, Fuel Supplies Agri Services Farm House And anyone else I have forgotten please forgive me.

If you would like to donate to the fund you may either make a cheque payable to Senior Citizens Service or deposit direct into our bank account, details below:

In these trying times it is sometimes hard to think of others as you fend for you and your families, searching for commodities, water, candles etc, but we still do think of others as you have proved to me, so I leave you with this saying to show you are never alone.

First of all.....let me thank you for the wonderful site.....it brings back so many memories of a great and wonderful country..... .. having left Bulawayo as a seventeen year old in 1960 I can fondly relate to the many charming, amusing, delightful and poignant pictures you paint. I love your article on the "Borrow Street Swimming Pool" .... you see that is what brought our family to Bulawayo in 1949.

My father Gordon Bridger took the position of Superintendent that year. I can remember coming north from Johannesburg with him and our dog Scout, a Doberman, in a loaded down 1948 Fleetline Chevy....roof rack and the works. Can you remember how we would place one of those canvas water bottles with the brown ceramic necks on the front bumper on these long trips! To keep the water cool. So funny! When I first saw the swimming pool it looked more like a frog pond...really really green water, broken tiles and in a state of great disrepair. Under the guidance of old Gordon a new filtration system was put in....huge tanks full of different sized sand and gravel, (these were emptied and refilled during the winter months) and of course the huge aeration system that you refer to....the tower that puts a chlorine filled mist in the air....I used to love to stand and watch the water pour down and listen to the low roar of the water crashing down before entering the pool through those big pipes (we would stand in front of them and let the pressure move us around...did you do that?) He was so proud of the crystal clean water once the system had been fine tuned. I remember the year they pulled up all of the old tiles and replaced them....it looked so good....the white, the straight black marker lines and the blue scum channels.

Thank you so much for the picture of the old turn style! The gathering place. Wild anticipation of a great day ahead. We would take the style and spin it like crazy....remember the clackity clack clack clack as it turned!!! Life was so simple and so good back then....remember Miss Smith White....the lady that took the tickey through the window at the turn style....scared all the kids as she thought everyone was trying to sneak in.....she was so funny.....black bun and Ruth Buzzy (Laugh In) stockings that hung down.....one of the many characters of Bulawayo. My mother believe it or not was responsible for suggesting that the drab dark green doors of the cubicles be jazzed up a little.....hence the brightly coloured doors....and the benches with the canvas tops....so many colours. I thoroughly enjoyed your memories of pool....the candy (sweets) we used to enjoy.....I digress....sorry. ....its just great to remember the good times in Byo with someone that can relate. You probably get allot of this!

I was wondering if you have...or know of some place I can obtain photographs of Borrow Street Swimming Pool, and the Princess and Palace movie theaters etc. What great times....I remember when the movie Rock around the Clock (Bill Haley & The Comets) came out.....we rock n rolled in the isles until the whole building shook!!! See...I digress again!
Once again...thanks so much for the wonderful work you are doing....I enjoy reading your Morning Mirrors articles immensely.
