I WISH YOU ENOUGH

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude
bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

DRINK WARM WATER AFTER A MEAL
Not only about the warm water after your meal, but about ladies and their heart attacks.
This makes sense.... the Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals...not cold water... maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain... For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks:
Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

Several of us in the US are organising an International Day of Prayer for Zimbabwe, to be held April 18, 2007. Already over 1200 have joined our face-book group. Can you help us get the word out? All we're asking is for people to
1) pray,
2) organise a prayer event in their city, and
3) pass the word along to everyone in their address book and ask them to do the same.

Thanks!

Verity Amm, a long established Centre for senior citizens is adjacent to Coronation Cottages and provides a venue for activities for residents of the Cottages and all the other homes and cottages in the area. Last year we were made aware of the fact that, in common with everyone else, many of our Members and others were experiencing more and more problems economically and food was becoming a very big problem to them despite the SOAP parcels received by a number so it was decided to set up a Soup Kitchen to lend a helping hand.
This, naturally, had its hiccups initially but is now running reasonably smoothly. We cook a meal on Monday and Thursday and on Wednesday and Friday tea and biscuits are available on the veranda from 10 in the morning. We have been lucky with volunteers from within. It is no mean task preparing a meal for 45 people as the number is now - having gone up from around 25 last year!.
We would ask though if anyone can provide us with an assortment of vegetables on a weekly basis. This would help us enormously. We have had fund raising events and are in a position to pay. The residents are asked to pay $100 per meal which is costing a minimum of $1 000 a portion to provide. For tea it is a donation which means $10 or $20 generally.
Those not in a position to pay even this amount are asked to give a hand behind the scenes and receive their meal free. We have been very fortunate with a wonderful donation of meat recently which has provided 3 meals and should be adequate for another 3 at least. It is unbelievable that these people who were captains of industry, teachers, railwaymen, Zesa leaders, valued farmers and the like, with very many years' service to the City and/or the country, should now be reduced to having to rely on their daily 'bread' from wherever it can come.
The Soup Kitchen has provided much needed occupational therapy, has certainly improved attitudes and given the people something to look forward to which we feel is just as important as the food. So many of these people no longer have anyone here to take an interest in them but they themselves are in no position to go elsewhere for one reason or another.

It is very difficult to raise funds from within. The annual subscription is $1 000 per year and their 100 Club is $500 a month! There is a well stocked library and now video library for which very little can be charged, the hairdresser visits at intervals and a doctor calls to keep a check on things and religious groups hold services regularly. All in all the Hall is active .

A fashion show is being organised for Thursday 15 February at 2.30 - entrance by donation. We are hoping that this will be well supported. The hall is well maintained and equipped, with a stage and is available for hire at a very reasonable rate for events catering for up to 100 where alcohol is kept to a minimum.

Any help which can be given in any direction will be greatly appreciated and what has been received from so many quarters is very gratefully received. Unfortunately this is an on- going exercise which we are happy to fulfil as best we can.
JULIET RICKWOOD - Chairman, Verity Amm Executive Committee.

"We are kindly asking for assistance in the form of clothing & food for two little sisters we have taken in. The two girls are aged 2years and 3 weeks old and their own parents are unable to afford to support them properly.
Contact Christina on cell 091-918-372 or Natasha on cell 023-406-731. Any small donation would be greatly appreciated. "

Many thanks Erica O'Donnell

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT SOMEONE'S DRINKING ?

You don't have to drink to suffer from alcoholism.

Are you confused, depressed and nervous ?

Are you losing sleep ? Are fears overwhelming you ? Do you feel sorry for yourself ? Do you refuse invitations to family and social functions ? Do you take your frustrations out on others ? Are you resentful ? Do you lie and try to cover up the drinking problem ? Are you ashamed of your situation ?
There is help available for you in AlAnon Phone 011 218 314 Tuesday evenings 7.30 pm Christ The King Church, corner of Matopos Rd and Cecil Avenue (entrance off Oxford Road), Hillside, Bulawayo. Thursday lunchtime 1 pm (or as near as) Mini Street Methodist Church , corner of 11th Avenue (entrance in small gate to the house), Bulawayo.

Hello there,
Having become a 'whenwe' after only 3 years in Bulawayo during the 80's, I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your pages. Bulawayo was my first taste of Africa, and although we left to go to Botswana, where the money, (ex-pat status) shopping, easier way of life was the hook, I sorely miss Bulawayo. Things I still miss -
Tea at Meikles, especially waffles and cream.
Saturdays in town.
A visit to Christian Brothers Library for tea and a browse.
A big monthly shop at the Hypermarket.
Stocking up on fresh bread, rolls and cakes at Haefeli's the bakers.
Eskimo Hut for the best ice cream. Ever.
The Hairy Canary for milk shakes for the kids.
The drive in, way out of town.
I could go on. And on and on.
But one thing above all sticks in my mind. Apart, that is from my best mate Beryl, from Ilanda. If any one knows of her (and there can be only one Beryl from Ilanda) please tell her that I've been trying to get in touch. Has she moved?
When we arrived and settled in our new home, we brought a black Labrador puppy from Mr and Mrs Palm, the well known Labrador breeders. The puppy's SA Kennel Club name was Petabride Morwenna, but we called her Tessa. Tessa had a wonder full few days in the company of a yellow Labrador, which resulted in her giving birth to 7 puppies (8, but one died). It was one of the happiest time of our lives, bringing up these pups, feeding them and trying not to tread/sit on them. We had to give them names, so we chose villages from the area where we used to live, ie Peterborough in the UK. So there was Marholm, Glinton, Maxey ect. though each had their own special names. Elsa, the pick of the litter, a peppermint, went to SA. But I'd love to know what happened to the rest of them. There was Bonnie and Buffy and the rest. What happened to them? I know I'm going back more than 20 years, and I don't expect any of them to still be chasing rabbits, but maybe they had puppies of ther own? They all went to good homes in the Bulawayo area, so if anyone has a recollection, I'd be grateful if you could let me know. My email address is jj.abbott@ntlworld. com.
Many thanks. And do, please, keep up the good work.

Just to let everybody know, that, the wonderful range of padlocks etc. that we advertised to secure your home or office have all been stolen, along with our drilling machine, angle grinder and welding machine and various other items. We had a break in in the early hours of Sunday the 11th Feb, where our doors and locks were smashed and broken for the thieves to gain access. Please if anybody is offered any of the above items to buy, to let us know, as Peter, now cannot not open or repair safes etc. without these. They will be very costly to replace. We had a previous burglary in these same premises last year and are sure it is the same people. Any assistance in helping us find these thieves will be greatly appreciated!

NEWS FLASH FROM BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION

Here is some news to brighten your day and to let you know that tourism to Zimbabwe is still alive and well!

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority representative based in London has emailed the Association to say that she is putting together a fishing group from Ireland which will most likely come to Zimbabwe in March and another such group in August. The President of an Irish rugby Club whom Mrs Bell met last year, is anxious to bring teams to Zimbabwe (Bulawayo) in summer, and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority London is in the process of compiling familiarisation tours to Zimbabwe from UK and Ireland.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority representative based in Paris is also planning to bring a group of golf safari operators to Zimbabwe and the Association will ensure that they see the local golf courses.
The Association has approached the Editor of the SA Airlink "Skyways" magazine to ask if an article on the Matopos could be included in one of their issues. The Editor responded promptly to say that she would be happy to come to Bulawayo to write the article herself. Mrs Bell also approached the Editor of "Drive" which is an excellent glossy magazine, published in Germany and distributed world-wide to all Europcar outlets with the same request, and Ms Haug has emailed a very positive reply.
SA Airlink is increasing its flights between Johannesburg and Bulawayo and we hope that in the not so distant future, Air Zimbabwe will re-schedule its flights between Harare and Durban.
We wish you a very good week.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Muffy Williamson for the lovely gift of linen < which will certainly brighten up the life of a dear old resident in Garden Park. Bless You and Thank you.
Martie Charsley.

RETROUVAILLE - weekend for married couples
We are going through some very stressful times and marriages are not surviving. Without good communication skills and respecting the ways we are different it is no wonder that relationships fall apart. There is a weekend coming up on the 9th - 11th March with a 12 follow ups that will help you to improve your relationships. There is only one criteria and that is that you are both willing to work on your marriage. Retrouvaille (means to rediscover) There is no group therapy, counselling or sharing of your difficulties. It is completely private. The team model better communication skills and share from their own experience so that you are guided through the training process. Every marriage goes through cycles of change involving romance, disillusionment, misery and awakening. Although today many get stuck in the misery stage.we invite you to rediscover the new relationship that is possible. PRH (Personality & Human Relations) It all began with one man, Andre Rochais in France in 1970, who was inspired by a vision of humanity . Through meticulous observation of his own experience, he devised a structured method of personal growth which is universally accessible. We offer workshops and helping relationships that help you to discover and live your aspirations and qualities so as to find deep joy, meaning, purpose and fulfilment in your daily life. It gives opportunities for you to progress in how to grow in freedom and harmony in all areas of your experience - work, family, relationships etc. Discover how this simple, unique and rewarding method, elaborated by Andre Rocais forty years ago, can transform the way you see yourself and lead your life. These workshops offer you a simple, yet far reaching, method for deepening your awareness of your potential, goodness and strength in order that you might live a more meaningful relationship both with yourself and others, and manage your life more effectively. If you choose to enrol for a PRH workshop, at the very least you will give yourself a 5 day break for self-discovery and contemplation away from your daily stresses and, at the very best, it will be pivotal in your greater self-fulfilment and happiness. Check out the web site www.prh-internation al.org Next workshop "Who Am I?" starting 21st February. Dear Zimbabwean
The truth of the matter is, no matter where you are in the world; you can no longer relax in the thought that your parents, siblings, or children have access to basic foodstuffs and household goods. Sending them money may help, but you will agree that sending them groceries is more critical.

We at Phathisa are here to help you solve this problem by offering you a safe, robust and dependable solution. Our service is to shop and transport groceries on your behalf. To guarantee you quality products, we have streamlined our preferred suppliers list to include your favourite household brands such as ShopriteCheckers, PicknPay, Spar and Makro. All you need to do is to tell us what to buy and what address to deliver to.... yes, it's that simple.
Help us help you alleviate food shortages at home by emailing the words "I am interested" to sales@phathisa. co.za .Upon receipt of this, we in turn will send through to you a registration form and shopping basket. Please feel free to forward this mail to anyone that you feel may benefit from this service. Hope to hear from you soon.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR
A young man with an Afrikaans Christian and surname, married to a South African lady who had an adopted son. This young man is involved in sports promotion in either Worcestershire or Warwickshire. This young man is the only son of Betty who has lived at Coronation Cottages for Senior Citizens in Bulawayo for quite a few years now. Betty has Glaucoma and now is very nearly blind. She manages remarkably well and survives by the grace of God, her church and her good friends and her Railways pension of 10c a month! Betty prays every night for her son and daughter in law and her greatest wish is for them to make contact with her again. He may not be aware that senior citizens in particular have not been able to afford to buy a stamp for many years now and she could not write to him as he has never let her have his address. He does `phone very occasionally but for a very brief moment and Betty does not know his telephone number even if she could afford to make a call.
This description may mean something to someone reading the Morning Mirror and, if so perhaps a contact could be re-established. This young man would be surprised how strong and resourceful his mother is despite her disability but if she felt he cared for her it would make such a great difference to her.

We have many such cases at the Cottages and are attempting to assist in making contact with families particularly at this time when our Senior Citizens are struggling to cope with the inflation which is spiralling totally out of control.. There are few companies or organisations who show any consideration for the plight of their pensioners many of whom are reaching the point of despair. The frozen British pensions are adding to many people's problems. For instance one lady here is 94 years of age and her husband died aged 97 two years ago. She receives the pension her husband was getting at the age of 75 when he left the UK. About gbp120 a month. There are many people in a similar position in all the former Commonwealth countries and these people paid in to the pension scheme as though they were in the UK. There are very few pensioners in this country who are in a position to enjoy their retirement but this is not peculiar to this country. One big difference is that 6 financial institutions collapsed in one year taking precious life's savings with them leaving many near destitute. We are indeed grateful for much support coming from The Bulawayo Help Network which is taking so many worries off shoulders, particularly of single women who are in the majority amongst the senior citizens.

The Help Network in Bulawayo was set up to co-ordinate help in and around Bulawayo for the elderly; to act as a referral centre and to maintain and update a data base of all the help available. The BHN e-mail address is byohelp@netconnect. co.zw E-mail is our preferred means of communication as all other methods are out of reach financially.
