TOC H STREET COLLECTION

Greetings from Cape Town! I hope this finds you and all your family 
well.  Ive been clearing out our cupboards lately and filled a few 
black bin bags with old clothes and shoes, mainly for children 
(around 8 and 11) that my girls have grow out of.  It seems such an 
awful waste to get rid of it all down here, when there is such dire 
need in Zim.  Im not sure if you know of any orphanages or 
charitable organisations in Byo that could do with such a
donation?  
I know its not a very practical idea and the logistics are rather 
complicated, but if I were to sell them here and send the money to 
you, it would amount to very little, comparatively.
I thought perhaps, with Christmas coming up, there would be a
decent 
amount of Zimbabweans driving down to Cape Town on holiday and I 
could send them back with them?  Im happy to drop them off anywhere 
if you know of anyone coming down this way in a car.  If not, Id be 
grateful if you would put me in touch with someone who could use
them.

RESEARCHING HOPEHANN FAMILY TREE
I am researching our family tree, in particular on my Mums side of 
the family.  My Mums surname at birth was Hopehann and she was born 
in Salisbury (now called Harare), Zimbabwe.  Im sure you will agree 
that Hopehann is a very unusual surname.  When the Google Search 
Engine came up with a letter from a Mrs Hopehann whod written to 
you some time ago, my heart did a little leap!  A glimmer of hope 
that Mrs Hopehann might somehow be related to our family.

Can anyone help with details of Mrs Hopehann who was a resident at 
Edith Duly Nursing Home, but who died some months ago ?

A few weeks ago,the  Boarding house  where my wife's brother has 
lived for the past 10 years in Germiston burned down,as a result,he 
and many others lost every thing.
He was a British passport holder.
He  applied to get another British passport,how ever,the British
High 
Commission in Johannesburg, insist he produce his original birth 
certificate,plus his fathers,who was born here.
My wife has the fathers birth certificate here in London,our head 
ache is, trying to get my brother in law a copy of his birth 
certificate from Zimbabwe.
Is there any way that a reader of the  Morning Mirror could assist
us 
on this,we are quite willing to pay who ever does the process for
us 
60 pounds,we can do a money transfer before the process begins,or

I am trying to locate a Mr Nick Basson formerly from Bulawayo.  He 
worked for the Rhodesian Railways approximately 29 years ago and

two brothers Koos and David Basson. Nick would be between the age

BULAWAYO HELP NETWORK is a network of charities assisting the
elderly 
in and around Bulawayo.  Their needs are many and varied and 
escalating!  We are grateful for the wonderful support we have 
received through Morning Mirror for the appeals we have made in the 
past. Now I have some new ones.
1. Magnifying glass for an elderly man who has a blind spot. He is 
able to pay for it but can't find one in Bulawayo.
2.  Someone downsizing and moving into Coronation Cottages needs a 
small fridge.
3. Ralstein Home is run by the Salvation Army for elderly
destitutes. 
We have been working with them and they have made some significant 
improvements. Firstly they have moved out the Botswana students
which 
means more rooms are available.  Donations of food, gardening 
equipment, curtaining and bed linen are much in need. We ask you to 
consider them when you are clearing out the garage and cupboards.

4. Senior Citizens Service (medical support to elderly) is looking 
for unused oxygen bottles. Please contact Les Hunt on 281340 or

5. Jacaranda House is appealing for cutlery, glasses and kitchen

Ave, 
or phone them on 66939.
6. An elderly man at Jacaranda House is in need of an electric 
kettle. Contact Byo Help Network.
Finally, we are often phoned by concerned and caring citizens about 
elderly white people seen begging at Hillside and other shopping 
centres. Most of these people are known to us as "professional 
beggars"; they have been offered accommodation at an institution
but 
prefer to stay independent and on the street. You do not need to
let 
them make you feel guilty nor do you need to keep funding them. We 
understand your concerns but some of them are good con artists too.

at the SOAP fundraiser on Sunday 29 October at Whitestone School

UWE wins £423K grant to catalogue Rhodesian Army archive

The University of the West of England has just been awarded
£423,000
by
the Arts and Humanities Research Council to research and catalogue
the
archives of the Rhodesian army. This project will be carried out in
partnership with the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum.

At present the archive is sitting in hundreds of uncatalogued boxes
in
the Bristol-based museum. Researchers who have investigated the boxes
have found gems such as poignant photographs of soldiers on both
sides
of the war for independence; intelligence reports; operational
instructions, and policy debates exposing the strengths and
weaknesses
of a doomed but desperate government. However there is no way of
locating specific documents and no organising principle behind the
collection, which was saved from destruction after independence in
1980
and smuggled into South Africa.

The three-year project will produce a comprehensive searchable
catalogue
of this unique collection, with user-friendly web-based access, and a
guide to the contents. Up to 10,000 pages of material will also be
digitised and included in the Aluka Struggles for Freedom in Southern
Africa collection, which documents the liberation struggles in
southern
Africa since the end of World War II. Aluka is a separate project
supported in part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Project leader Dr Diana Jeater is Principal Lecturer in African
History
in UWE's Faculty of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, and
also
Chair of the Britain Zimbabwe Society. She said:

This is a really exciting collection with something for military and
social historians, those interested in liberation struggles and
questions of identity, and the wider community.

For forty years, the wars of liberation in southern Africa had a
profound impact on the region. Amongst those opposing African
majority
rule, the Rhodesian Army has been mythologised as a formidable
fighting
machine. This archive offers for the first time an opportunity to
test
the folklore surrounding this force, and to situate it in its time
and
place. The history of Zimbabwe and its links with Britain continue to
have resonance in our communities today.Â"

The team includes Research Fellow Tim Lovering, who is a military
historian and trained archivist. He said: The project's link with the
Aluka collection offers a form of repatriation for the material that
had
to be taken from the country in secret and hidden in people's
garages
in
order to save it. Thanks to this project present-day Zimbabweans,
some
of whom lost relatives in the war of independence, will have access
to
this era in their history.Â"

A full-time archivist will be appointed and the project will welcome
volunteers who are training to be archivists or PhD students who
wish
to
base theses on the material.

The project begins in September 2006 and the results will be
presented
at a public conference, and provide the basis for output such as
papers,
books and theses.

Gareth Griffiths, Director of BECM, said, "This award confirms the
importance of the collections which the Museum Trust has saved for
the
