WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT ZIMBABWE.
(Private Voluntary Organisation number PV0204/68) (Formerly WILDLIFE SOCIETY OF ZIMBABWE)

Due to the critical situation that developed in Hwange National Park towards the end of 2005 and before the onset of the rains, there was much public concern regarding the state of the park and its water supplies. In order to try and rectify any further crises, a joint venture has been set up with the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, Friends of Hwange Trust and WEZ. Our first project with the co-operation of Hwange Park staff will be to completely revamp ten selected pans and their water source.

Friends of Hwange Trust, in conjunction with Parks and Wildlife Management, have employed Mario Gomes to supervise the first stages of this project. The venture will be operating out of The Hide and we very much appreciate the active part they will be playing in initiating our plans. A suitable vehicle is on loan to this joint venture, generously sponsored by Mitsubishi Fuso and fitted with a winch and bull bars by Naledi Motors, both of Gaberone, Botswana. Safari Centre, Cape Town, has provided a second winch and Caltex, South Africa, has promised sponsorship of some fuel. Getaway Magazine and Flame Lily Holidays are some of the prime movers in Friends of Hwange and have done much to solicit support in South Africa. Many people, societies and companies have expressed concern and offered assistance, for which we are most grateful - and so are the animals! Hwange Conservation Society UK, SAVE Foundation Australia, Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, Wilderness Safaris, Matupula Safaris, The Hide Safari Camp and several others have already played a significant role in Hwange National Park.

While we wish to express grateful thanks to all concerned, as with so many societies in Zimbabwe and with our prevailing economic climate, WEZ is appealing to anyone who can, in any way, assist with this ongoing exercise. We should like to appeal to all WEZ members to ensure that their membership subscriptions are paid up to date and would obviously welcome any new members to the society. (Any Matabeleland subscriptions should be paid at the WEZ shop in the TV Sales and Hire premises, Fife Street.)

BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION

WE WOULD LIKE TO LIST FOR YOUR INFORMATION SOME OF THE MAJOR UNDERTAKINGS OF THIS ASSOCIATION OVER THE YEARS:

1. One of the instigators and founder members of the establishment of a university in Bulawayo.
2. J M Nkomo Airport. The Association has been pushing for the expansion and refurbishment of the airport for over 30 years. It has written to Ministers and Ministries, been on committees and organised meetings with stake-holders and international consultants. It continues to be on the Airport Facilitation Committee and submits and pursues suggestions from the Association's members.
3. Cricket. The Association has publicised the international matches at Queens Sports Club through its various outlets; met and provided information and assistance to all sports media; and during the World Cup Cricket series the staff manned desks at the various hotels where cricketers and media were based to deal with queries.
4. Diplomats' Spouses Welfare Association. This is a Harare based Association which was formed to raise funds for charitable organisations, which initially only seemed to assist Harare institutions. The Association therefore invited the Association to visit Bulawayo to inspect the local organisations; compiled the itineraries, organised transport and obtained complimentary meals and accommodation. The first visit took place in 1997 and thereafter for the next three years it became an annual occurrence. The visits also included the tourist attractions in the city. These visits proved of great benefit to the local Homes and Shelters.
5. The Centenary Celebrations - 1994. BPA formed a committee of interested citizens to organise Centenary celebrations. This developed and was taken over by City Council with the Association on the main and various sub-committees.
6. The Eclipse - 2002. The Bulawayo Publicity Association set up a committee representing all bodies of the community which met on a regular basis to handle all problems which could arise with the large number of tourists, media and local residents expected to view the eclipse. The Association also publicised the event world-wide.
7. 'Keep Bulawayo Beautiful' and City Council 'Anti Litter Campaign'. The Association played an active part on both committees.
The Association pursues with Bulawayo City Council the repainting of zebra crossings, the incorrect spelling of certain street signs in various suburbs, dangerous potholes, pollution from vehicles, etc. The ZRP has also been asked to take action about the thefts in the Central Business District, the low standard of tuition of driving schools and the dangerous driving of motorists.
It is on the City Council Trade Fair Pavilion Committee; it attended meetings and workshops dealing with the proposed twinning of the Durban Municipality with Bulawayo.
8. National Parks Entrance Charges. The Association has taken up with Dr Gono and his officials and the Minister of Finance, the problem arising from the charging of entrance fees only in foreign currency. It was explained that on many occasions tourists had changed most of their money into Zimbabwe currency and therefore could not pay in forex. Traveller's cheques or visa cards were also not acceptable to National Parks. To date, the situation remains unresolved.
9. Air Zimbabwe. Several years ago the Bulawayo Publicity Association organised meetings on a two monthly basis between Air Zimbabwe officials from Harare and representatives from travel, tourism, commerce and industry. These proved very successful for airing problems. It was suggested to Air Zimbabwe at a recent launch of their new schedules that these meetings should be resurrected.

TOURISM -
1. Groups of travel agents from Harare and Johannesburg have been invited to Bulawayo by the Bulawayo Publicity Association to inspect the tourist attractions and accommodation.
2. Travel writers and journalists from South Africa, Canada and United States of America have been invited to Bulawayo and Matabeleland and hosted, which has given the city a lot of excellent publicity. The Editor of 'Hello' magazine devoted two pages of editorial and pictures on this area in one of her issues a few years ago. 'Getaway' magazine from South Africa published a feature of several pages on the Matopos and Bulawayo after their visit to Bulawayo at the Association's invitation.
3. Travel shows and workshops. The Association has participated at all the travel shows held annually in Harare and for several years when finances permitted, attend the Indaba in Durban, which is a major world travel show. It also held annual tourism workshops in South Africa for several years before sourcing and buying foreign currency became a problem. These were all highly successful.
4. It has been awarded the Dave Kaufman Trophy for the best Publicity
Association by the Zimbabwe Council for Tourism for four years running.
The Association is invited to all Zimra and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe workshops and was invited to attend the Minister of Finance's pre- budget workshop.

Z.N.S.P.C.A. (Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)

ZNSPCA is the umbrella organisation under which all SPCAs in Zimbabwe operate. ZNSPCA is registered with and operates under the International SPCA banner, without which no SPCA can operate, legally or effectively - and is closely aligned with NSPCA (SA). ZNSPCA's role is little seen but most essential in it's overseeing of all Zimbabwe's SPCA's as well as local legal and international responsibilities. In addition, it ensures coverage of areas that the local SPCA Centres can't reach, supports (financially and practically) any Centres in need and regularly checks all Centres to ensure that basic requirements/needs are met as best possible and that all commitments and accountings are honoured. Its' numerous OutReach programmes in rural areas cover both practical and educational - from showing people the advantages of better donkey harness' and animal husbandry for better returns to fun but practical demos in schools, & from encouraging essential inoculations for Rabies etc and basic care to euthanising animals in pain and beyond hope.

Whilst ZNSPCA is based in Harare, it's National Co-ordinator is, again, Bulawayo based! (Previous N.C., Meryl, was in Bulawayo, but transferred to Harare as the greatest need was there at the time). Bulawayo people have again showed why this Centre continues to one of the strongest in Zimbabwe, despite many falters and numerous problems - past, present and continuing.

In support of the OutReach programmes, Mobile Clinics and urgent Inspectorate training requirements, ZNSPCA plans to hold a Charity Golf Day at Bulawayo Golf Club in July. The support of Bulawayo's people; public, company and corporate is essential.

We know that budgets are stressed and stretched generally so hope to establish an attractive prize table as well as company/corporate sponsorship on the course.

(This basis can be assisted by donations from individuals and small companies ("one man's rubbish is another man's treasure"!) So many people want to help but think they can't do so - please have a "dig in your drawers" - could be that ghastly pressie from Ma-in-Law that you buried years ago or that oddment of old stock is now "designer chic"? If it's new/unused, we'll thank you for helping to make our ZNSPCA prize table fun and unique!)
Thanx to all of you who will help make this ZNSPCA fund-raiser a success in Bulawayo - more importantly, thank you for helping the very many animals in desperate need and the people who do their best to help take care of them. Sadly, thanx also for helping us to prosecute those who deliberately abuse and misuse animals.
Please contact Convenor, Rowena Harrison on 242685, 011 636908 or e- mail petro@zol.co.zw if you are able to help.
ZNSPCA National Co-ordinator, Glynis Vaughan, can be contacted on 240956 or 091 367260 regarding any National queries/info.
(SPCA Bulawayo Branch continues it's sterling work locally, and can be contacted on 66578 or 66593 regarding any requirements or needs in the area)

To All Exhibitors and Stand-holders who would be interested in taking up a stall at Falcon College Tour De Falcon, on Sunday July 2nd, 2006 at 8.00 am onwards, please let me know if you would like to apply for a stall. We will be charging a fee, and you will be able to use our tables and chairs, (you may also supply your own if you wish) - and we are expecting an enormous crowd.

There will be many riders participating in the Tour De Falcon Bike Ride (Organisers - Flying Eagles) and there will be "Off-Road Riders", "Social Riders" and "Serious Riders". We are even expecting teams from South Africa!

The fee per stand, will be set closer to the event, so I am just asking for interested parties to send me their names and contact details, and also to give you notice, so that you can build up stock of your product for this very exciting Fair - we will be donating part of our proceeds to a needy cause.

Any interested parties who wish to be kept informed and wish to partake, please contact me on E-Mail :- pridgeon@mweb.co.zw, tel 233556 or mobile (091) 246 121 in order for me to include you/your company on my data base. Many Thanks.

THE KING GEORGE VI BAND SCOOPED THE TOP PRIZE IN THE MUSIC CROSSROADS PROVINCIAL COMPETITION ON SUNDAY

HARARE - Zimbabwe clawed their way back into contention with a hard- fought 3-1 victory in this nail-biting Euro/Africa Zone Group Two doubles encounter against Norway at the Harare Sports Club yesterday. And it was with a record to book as number one seed Genius Chidzikwe and his partner Gwinyai Tongoona became the first black players in the history of the competition to win a life rubber.

ON THE SUBJECT OF THE BULAWAYO CREMATORIUM

By the way, bulawayo residents should go to the power station. maybe they can use one of their boilers to carry out cremations!

A.O.

Oh yes, please if the crematorium is not working when I go, please rather throw me into the Zambesi to the crocs. 'B'

Well in the Capital of KwaZulu-Natal the Crematorium also does not work (not because of a lack of fuel either) and it is necessary to send the bodies down to Port Shepstone - two hours fast drive, but probably a lot longer in a hearse.

To everyone out there, when you can't find the words to say 'I am sorry' :
When harsh words are spoken,
Tears in heaven fall,
When anger is all blinding,
Rainbows have colours no more,
Like a burden the weight of the words
Are carried,
Heavy is my heart,
At a loss, for days, months,
What to do,
What to say,
Only sorrow and sadness
Regret fills the days.
A Friendship as fragile as a broken cup,
Spanning years broken & repaired,
Pieced together with hope & love,
Knowing each other inside & out,
Through the years of laughter, heart ache and pain,
We have been together and seen the best and the worst,
I'm so sorry you experienced my worst,
I'm so sorry for the hurt, for the pain.
Heavy is the heart when a wrong has been done,
Any my heart has been heavy,
I'm so sorry.

Look at those who can forgive,
If you want to see the heroic,
Look at those who can love in

THE AFRICA CHALLENGE (PART I - April 06)

At this stage all is on track for the 14000-kilometre voyage through Africa. 'Blue Peril' the Land Rover has been bought, bull bars and a roof rack have been mounted and tested (Long story!!). The tyres and suspension are about to be renewed; the final MOT and service are about to be undertaken.

When thinking about completing a voyage of this size I thought, "This will be interesting, and I am sure there will be work involved with regards to preparation, but on the whole it won't take that long to achieve".

How naive I was! The latest news I guess is that everything is progressing well - I am actually ahead of schedule! Blue Peril is literally "growing" before my eyes.

The next big activity will be the purchasing of all the Tupperware and storage containers, the linen, the crockery and cutlery and other utensils, these will all have their special place in the Landy - I am not sure I know where each item is going to be packed, but that that is part of the fun!

The only vaccination required by law is against Yellow Fever, but highly recommended for this kind of trip is also against Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Meningitis, Polio and Tetanus. I will be talking to my doctor soon to gather his advise.

Planning and working on the trip is now a daily exercise; just a little job here and there has meant that hopefully I will suffered no stress, and I have to say I am really getting excited as everything falls into place.

And just in case you were wondering, yes, I am counting the days down; there's a countdown calendar pinned to my bedroom wall where I mark off the days each morning!

Special thanks needs to go at this early stage to Steven Marin from International Communications Group of Companies, who has made a considerable donation towards this challenge. Steven amongst other things runs Western Union in Gibraltar.

JOHN LAING

EX BULAWAYO BOY
I used to live in Bulawayo many years ago, my parents both worked in the city, my Father for the Technical College and my Mum was a buyer for Meikles. We left in 1976 when I was 16.
When we first came back to the UK, I use to say "I lived most of my life in Bulawayo, Rhodesia", in time this changed to "I lived half of my life in Bulawayo Rhodesia" and now I simply say "I lived my younger life in Bulawayo, Rhodesia".
I've known for a long that the Bulawayo I love and still miss so very much, no longer exists, not in the way that I remember it anyway. However I will always cherish my memories of the great life that I had in such a wonderful country, I feel very privileged to have had the upbringing that I did and I genuinely believe it made a better person.
I'm 46 years old now, and there is not a single day that goes by that I do not think of Bulawayo, Eskimo hut treat with Mum and Dad at the weekend, going to Borrow Street baths with my friends after school, roller skating in the De Beers hall (in the trade fair grounds)....... meeting up with friends at the Centenary Park fountain on new years eve and going out watching the sun rise at worlds view on new years day.... even Lobels bread and Fritz Restaurant drive in.
One day I will return for a visit, I have no choice in the matter, I'm attracted to a place I consider home, much like a moth to a light bulb at night. I'm holding on for as long as I can, hoping and praying that the situation Zimbabwe will change and that I can visit a place that vaguely resembles the Bulawayo I left 30 years ago. I want to visit the places where I wrote my name in wet concrete and ran away before I got caught, walk down 16th avenue, past Gifford school, and walk back up again to the Matopos Road, I want to visit Hamilton High and Henry Low too...... I want to drive up Pembroke Road in Hillside and seen my one of my old homes.......
I may have left 30 years ago but my heart never left, I know I yearn for a time gone by that is clouded by the impressions of the young boy I was, this way Bulawayo is still the same for me... in my thoughts and dreams.
Doug McDougall
ex Byo Boy..... and proud of it!

POWER LINES ROUND BULAWAYO.

I thought you might be interested in a subject we find very interesting. Have you driven along the Harare road or the Beit Bridge road of late, well if not take a short drive to the power lines that cross the road, nearly all of them have been stripped of the supports they once had, I wonder when they will fall down and we will then have NO power for a long while. They have now started on the first lot of power lines that cross the Plumtree road just about in town, the second and third lot of power lines that are on the Plumtree road are still intact!. for now !. A comment from Zesa would be interesting, I wonder if they have even noticed.
Regards, R.P.

Message from Jan Carew
Tomorrow I will try so very hard to reply to you individually Your messages mean so much to me and you must think I don't appreciate - I do SO much please please continue - your messages are my life line I feel that I am not doing as much as all of you to encourage my killer T cells to ravage the cancer - the power you all generate is HUGE. Eventually I had a better day today - pain under control again, both kids and Spider here & Tara and the girls safely ensconced opposite 23. Maybe tomorrow will see me transferred to the Dorchester hospice which will be so much more convenient for all. So much love to you all

SHARON (NEE) BROWN, I am searching for Sharon (nee) Brown formerly of Gwelo Rhodesia, where she was a Shop Assistant in the mid-late 70's. She should be around 47yrs of age this year. Her description in '77 was 5'10" tall, Light Brown Hair, Green Eyes, Fair Complexion. OR if anyone can remember a Brown who was a Boilermaker (her father), or a Clerk (her mother) - I would love to make contact with these folks! Any help in finding them would be greatly appreciated!

My name is Shantel Moore, I live in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, my baby, Keano Craig Klein has been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder (similar to Leukaemia), he is 11 months old, born on the 11th May 2005, I am appealing to anyone who may be in a position to assist me in any way possible, even if it is just information (i.e websites, Doctors etc). We were flown to Harare by M.A.R.S. (on Saturday 25/03/2006) as his condition was rapidly deteriorating, he had to under go 4 blood transfusions, one whilst in flight (as his blood count was 1% and it is supposed to be 99%). On Thursday the 30/03/2006 they took Xrays, did a CT scan (for Cancer) and they took bone marrow from his back and left leg. From the Xrays, they discovered that he had T.B, he then had to have a lower lebectomy (operation on the lungs) as the T.B. was eating away at his left lung (they cut away half of the lung), he is currently on T.B. antibiotics, the course is for 6 months. On Saturday the 1/04/2006, my Son had a mild heart attach (the Doctors suspected that he had a murmer), so on Wednesday 05/04/2006 he went for an ecocardic scan. On Saturday 08/04/2006 the Doctor informed me that Keano now has to be flown to South Africa - we have to go to either Cape Town or Johannesburg, as they have the equipment and facilities to treat Keano. We are being discharged from the Avenues Clinic in Harare, as there is nothing more they can do, I cannot give up on him, so please, if there is anyone who can help, please my contact information is listed below, as well as my Finances and the Doctor who has been treating Keano. I have enclosed some photos of Keano. Your assistance, help in any way, will be greatly appreciated. I, thank-you, from the bottom of my heart, for taking the time to read my plea.

"SWIMMING POOL OWNERS
We are currently working on a market survey and would value input from all swimming pool users and owners. We will be introducing to the market a new revolutionary pool chemical in the next few weeks. We ask you to take a few minutes to answer these few simple questions: 1. How much do you spend on pool chemicals per month on average? 2. What do you consider before buying your pool chemicals? (Price, quality or both) 3. Where do you usually buy your pool chemicals? (Supermarket, hardware store, wholesaler). 4. What product are you currently using? You can choose to answer all or part of the questions. Everyone who responds will be invited to the official launch of the new product to be held in Bulawayo. Details to be made available. Please email your responses including your contact details to divine@classicmail.co.za "
