00 Gauge (& other scales) Railway Modellers and Others
If there are any of us left who'd be interested in a strictly informal network to share information, reference material, techniques & maybe items of mutual use, while simply enjoying our hobby of miniature railways in all its forms, please contact me.
On e-mail [when the telOne line is working], gag@zol.co.zw,
snail mail at:
Waggon Wheels
Bx 19
Plumtree,
or, to save unaffordable snailcost, a note left with our kind friends Jill or Brian Tiller at:-
Vigne's Bookshop/coffee room
will find us when we visit Byo, or
telOne 019-3547 [don't be off-put by the ghost voice: Gwen & I are usually a fair walk from the phone] between 09h00 & 17h30 preferably, which merely accords with our 'retirement' routines!.

My personal railway interest is in 1950ies modelling using HD3 & now 2 and in potential RR as used on the Zambesi Saw Mills.
Being interested in modelling in general, anyone with an interest in small scale ['solid'] aircraft, ships, military & industrial subjects is equally welcome.

CRIME AWARENESS UPDATE FOR MORNING MIRROR 18/11/05
This month we have had no reports of hijacking as such, and we put this down to the fact of the current fuel crisis that we are all faced with in Zimbabwe. However vehicles have been stolen from properties, and are being used to remove stolen property from house robberies. House robberies are very much on the increase and these gangs are working in ALL areas, - reports from Hillside, Famona, Ilanda and Fortunes Gate have come in to the Trust, but this is by no means the total of areas involved. It is a known fact that NO suburb has gone without incident. This should be enough to make you look into your house and business security and update it to the best level you can. With the frightening price increases we have been experiencing in the last few weeks this may seem a large outlay at the time, but well worth it in the long run. The safety of your family and hard earned possessions should always be of prime importance and not to be taken lightly.
With the hot weather being well upon us now, be vigilant when sitting outside in your entertainment areas, keep the house alarms on and grills locked as much as possible. Do not leave windows open in rooms that are not being occupied at the time; these are all entry points used by the criminals. You are being watched for a period of time to see where the Weakest Links are and then full advantage taken.
A case reported in Harare, of the maid being forced at gunpoint to plead at the door for entry, claiming a sick child, then armed men charged through the opened door, so be on guard at all times! Our domestics are as much at risk as we are, and caution should be observed when attending to stress calls. Zimbabweans are known for their helpfulness and support, and we must not loose sight of this, but just be more alert and aware!
Please note that due to being totally blonde, I had transposed figures and the correct postal address is stated below. Please contact me directly if you had sent anything to Box 6191, as Hillside does not have any number like that and we can liaise what I can do to collect the mail.

This Clinic has been operating for 3 years to serve the needs of the poor and destitute in the area. It is run by a team of volunteers-two doctors, two nursing sisters with help from other nurses when they are off duty ,and several helpers.

LITTER BUGS
I would like to bring the attention to all residents. We have a huge problems of people still dumping their litter along Winnie's Way, it is an absolutely disgrace. We often take walks in the evening with our dog and past the bridge on Winnie Way only to be distraught by the amount of rubbish that is still being dumped. It is so shocking and the stench is horrendous and that we have to make a drastic rush to pass it. It would give me great pleasure to set it a light. But with being the law abiding citizen that I am, I feel that it would be up to the Council to have this eye sort removed.
PLEASE PLEASE!!!! STOP THIS and give Bulawayo a sense of pride that we once new.
Concerned Citizen

I have so enjoyed receiving the Morning Mirror each week and in particular the latest one 'a walk down memory lane' typist blues. When I had a mornings only job in Bulawayo in the early 70s I had to type, amongst other things, invoices. By the time lunchtime came my arms ached all the way up to my shoulders. My boss was very particular so no rubbing out or tippex allowed. But I will say this in defence of learning to type the old fashioned way I dont think I will ever suffer from RSI still hold my wrists up and straight (when learning we had to be able to balance a cup and saucer on our wrists (!), not that we ever did I hasten to add!). I watch the young people today at their computers leaning their wrists on desk or wrist rests and just hope they wont get RSI.
My other fond memory of working in an office in the 50s and 60s was the dreaded duplicating machine. In my first job I had to type the company accounts on stencils (large and small) and these were liberally anointed with little red splotches! I nearly always managed to get myself smeared in ink and we had to keep the dreaded stencils in case further copies were needed. The old Gestetner and Roneo were true monsters and I for one did not miss their demise in my later office life. And what about the dreaded telex machine. I used to get into the office very early in order to send telexes to England knowing the time difference then they couldnt witness how slowly I was sending (I didnt have the luxury of a tape telex)
Oh happy days the invention of e-mail!

Vervet Monkeys Release

If you look back at our one of our past breaking news stories, in particular the arrival of Bobo & Charlie the little vervet monkeys, this Release story should warm the cockles of your heart. Going back to when they were helpless & defenceless little animals, needing to receive special care & attention from Claire [our long standing volunteer]. To the present, where they are now integrated with others of their kind, to form a strong & confident troop prepared to go back into the Wild.
The integrating of vervet monkeys is a lengthy process, the placing of individuals together in one enclosure, often needs many months of individuals being placed alongside each other. This is done in order that a social structure is formed, to find the dominant male & female as thus form a troop hierarchy. This is a fundamental part of the process in order to be assured of survival & success once released back into the wild. During this process all the animals are watched under close supervision as there are often small minor injuries from the bickering & fighting that takes place.
The afternoon before departure, once again, human intervention was required, & now its them against us. There is a wild flurry of vervets scampering here and there whilst we are restraining them without chemical immobilisation [with exception of Mama & Chunky, whom were two dangerous to capture & handle by hand]. They were then placed in a travelling crate that would be taking them to their longed freedom.
We departed early morning, thus being able to reduce the amount of travelling in the hot, sweltering sun. Regular stops were made to ensure that our special cargo was coping, with the heat & stress associated with this type of travel.
On arrival at Main Camp, both our human & two legged friends took joy in the break & watering thus being able to cool down after a long & exhausting trip. After a final 50kms we arrived at Giraffe Springs where camp was set up, animals were fed & watered in preparation for their final release.
Half past 7 the next day after another short journey north, we arrived at Mtswiri Pan. After settling down for a few minutes the travelling crates were opened Tshoko, Bobo & Bobo 2 immediately climbed to the top of the crate filled with curiosity. Smaagol who ate well for most of the journey, appeared to be a little frightened with all the fuss, & walked straight to the vehicle and stole a juice bottle from the cabbie compartment.
Chunky the alpha male, along with Mama [who have been in our care for a number of years] whom were sedated throughout the journey due to their aggressive behaviour and to prevent them from hurting any of the smaller vervets, made a mad dash to the tree line to explore their new home. Chunky & Mama then waited patiently in the lush vegetation for the not so confident younger vervets to join them.

Charlie needed a moment or two before he went on to join them. Lulu who can to us from Mutare SPCA, was a little unsure of herself at first, however only took her a few moments to gain her confidence & then she was keen to explore her new surroundings.

Arwen & Evil Elf [from the Friends of Animals Foundation] along with Gavin who came to us from the SPCA, scampered around the vehicle a couple of times, climbing up and down the cab roof finally decided to head for the tree line again joining their friends, with their tails high in the air. Thsoko, Bobo not too far behind.

For Smaagol it seemed that he was more of an onlooker, here to say goodbye to his friends & wish them well. He needed a whispering in the ear to let him know that we were saying goodbye to him as well. With that he trotted off, occasionally looking back. We can only that their preparation, for a new life of freedom in Hwange National Park, was sufficient for a successful opportunity to be WILD at last, in their rightful home. Time was needed between the monkeys release & that of the baboons, so with that there was time, for the gals [volunteers] to have a much needed and quick shower . . . .
Chipangali would like to thank the SPCA around Zimbabwe, Friends of Animal Foundation and members of our community at large for their valiant efforts in saving animals, bringing wild animals into us to care for, especially so in these trying economic times that we all are experiencing.
Back at the Orphanage, we still are busy with little Thsoko, Marcel, Mr. T, Miagi, Jack. Little John & Mojo keeping us in check and whom are now making up the new group to be released in the future.
If you would like to support any of our monkeys under our care, we would certainly appreciate the help in adopting one of the above animals. As you can see it is a long a time consuming process but where possible we aim to release as many animals back into the wild.

Debbie Jeans (nee Warren) is married to a medical sports doctor and was karate champion (world/olympic) in the mid to late 1980's and also Zim 'Sports Person of the Year'.

Having just returned from attending a week long sports medicine conference in "Joeies" with Austin, the extent of both the economic and emotional "meltdown" in less than seven days is very obvious! Prices soaring, fuel still an even rarer luxury, add to this the alarming rate at which our hard-earned cash seems to vanish on a pitiful bag or two of basic groceries.... it's a battle both out there as well as here in our heads, to desperately try to keep calm!! We all do what needs to be done to feed, clothe and school the children, work harder to attempt to keep up with the weekly inflation of bills, but catching ourselves at odd moments in the day wondering where it will all end and what the future holds?

This is "survival mode". This is where we get to stare at our own fear in the face and tread where we've never been before. We make a plan for fuel, another to buy rare luxuries such as sugar or cooking oil and yet another to stretch the dollars until the end of the month. We have learned to say "no" to many things which we want to ensure that we can say "yes" to the things that we or our family need. Normal everyday "basic" commodities and actions in another place and time have become a treat for us, something to fully appreciate, to savour and to draw out the pleasure with which it comes! This can be a glass of imported wine, a take-away pizza for the kids, an imported deodorant, or even a bottle of hair conditioner!!??#*!

Many, many ex zimbos and people living outside, simply cannot understand why we're still here!!! Incredulous stares when one describes the plan of action for water shortages, fuel saving and sourcing, and daily adjustments on every level to rising costs and inefficiencies in just about every sector of business, municipality or service industries! Empathy runs high amongst those on the outside who understand why we are still here. So many have openly encouraged us to stand our ground, to hang in and to throw ourselves at making it "work out", to do whatever it takes to build upon the foundation of who and what we are. These very same people are the ones who tell us about the despair, the longing, the loneliness and the yearning for parts of our beloved land. The wide open spaces, the people and friendships, the Kariba sunsets, the laughter around a braai, the community in "making a plan". The "drop in for tea" attitude so prevalent amongst all Zimbabweans regardless of race, colour, tribe or background. The "we're all in it" under-current that brings us together in fuel queues, financial disasters, daily challenges.
Our mountains are huge, yet sitting in that auditorium listening to the shift in some of the best researchers and practitioners from sports medicine and the field of excellence in both physical and mental endeavour towards prevention and treatment of "chronic diseases", I found myself counting blessing after blessing for living in Zim!!!! Here are just a few of the "highlights" ...
* 60% of men and 50% of women are overweight in Oz. Could say the same for UK and USA ... South Africa not far behind.
* Inactivity has become a number one killer risk factor for heart disease ... on a par with smoking. In fact, being inactive is the same as smoking 20 a day!!!!!!
* Countries all over the world are engaging in huge, multi billion dollar health warnings and promotions. Get moving, eat less junk, get away from the T.V., eat less junk, get off the couch and turn off the tv ... don't use the remote, eat less junk, get moving!!!!!!
* Clogged and diseased heart arteries has just become the biggest killer in the world!!!!
* It has become a crisis of such huge proportions to just get people to do enough movement to shunt blood through their blood vessels to literally slow down the rate at which bodies are rotting from disuse, from stress and from almost 100% diseases caused by LIFESTYLE!!!!!!!!
So, my dear friends and countrymen, compare that to our verrrry junk food depleted daily diet (due to being too expensive or not available), our lack of super-duper-high-speed-high-perfrmance technology which means that we have to actually get off our butts and DO something with muscles somewhat larger than those in our index fingers, our problem of kids having half of most days doing school sports, our awful transport system so we walk, cycle or run from A to B. We don't run the risk of our kids hanging out at malls at every free moment .... there aren't any at which to hang out!!
Most of our kids don't get access to T.V. games, to the latest cell phones and ipods .... because we simply can't afford them. Even DSTV is a treat in increasingly more households .... so what's a poor, deprived Zim kid to do???? Well, they swim, run, cycle, play all manner of school and social activities. Triathlon, swimming, cycling, dancing (all kinds!), run around playing in the garden and occasionally they have a small relative break in their weekly activity mileage to watch a movie, listen to some music or chill at home or a mate's house for a few hours. Our challenge is not to stop them eating, but to ensure that they eat enough for their needs!!!
Ok, ok. Yes, I am biased. But do me a favour and compare the average one-way hour commute in Jo'burg / Cape Town / Durbs traffic with the 6 minute trip we have to make all the way from my front door to work / school. Cycling in Durbs or Joezies is like having your dearest death wish come true. Doing what you love, whilst playing with the grim reaper every time a vehicle passes .. which is around 5 million a minute. In Zim, the driving's not too great but hey, not too much of a hassel considering that 20 minutes on a bike in any direction out of town gets you into some exquisite countryside and all the wide open space in the world and a fraction of the traffic with which to contend!
No trip to Joezies is complete without a trip to Pick n' Pay supermarket - which was heaven as always; I tried not to let the morbid, stressed, depressed local shoppers get me down as they went about their daily / weekly million-choice-product shopping burdensome routine. I skipped out of there with my bag of treasures (sunlight soap, Charlie Gold deo, muesli, oats and a whole bottle of chocolate sauce for kids' twice a week ice-cream treat) and went back to the lectures on averting the biggest ever, world lifestyle disease disaster . smiling secretly to myself as more and more "evidence" was given by some of the best experts in the world as to why we are still here!!!
In conclusion, I don't dispute the fact that we are being faced with a mountain of struggles, but from the bottom of my heart I want you to consider the daily effect on our own health, sense of community spirit, and most importantly, the impact on that of our children!!! Every day that we are here, someone out there is being admitted to coronary care, another child is diagnosed with type II diabetes, billions is being spent on drugs to treat obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression. Whilst the angels in our midst are desperately fighting to treat, uplift and feed the starving and fatally ill, in the first world there are incomprehensible measures and expenses taken to prevent the over-fed from self destruction!!?!
We get to spend daylight hours with those we love in many an impromptu gathering - each one an opportunity to laugh, really laugh. To cry, really cry. And to know the caring and genuine bonds that nourish our souls, feed our resolve to lift our chin and square our shoulders. These are the things worth struggling for, this is why we're still here. Let us look to our challenges always with the knowledge that the flip side of that hardship coin holds many, many personal and nation-building attributes!! By the grace of God we will look back on this time and feel the warmth of all those in our lives who held our hand and walked with us physically, mentally and spiritually. Every day that we are here is a blessing not a curse, and don't ever think that it's a breeze outside of these borders. Enough said, I just wanted to share these thoughts with you and to tell you that we are in this together and we will make it together .... our attitude and direction is the same ... "Our Zimbabwe". Let's do it . together.
Always, and always,

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
TWO. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
FOUR. When you say, "I love you," mean it
FIVE. When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.
SIX. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.
EIGHT. Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.
NINE. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
TEN... In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
ELEVEN. Don't judge people by their relatives.
TWELVE. Talk slowly but think quickly.
THIRTEEN. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
FOURTEEN. Rem ember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
FIFTEEN. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
SIXTEEN. When you lose, don't lose the lesson
SEVENTEEN. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.
EIGHTEEN. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
NINETEEN. When you realise you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
TWENTY. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
TWENTY-ONE. Spend some time alone every day.
