PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

The American mezzo-soprano Barbara Fusco gives a recital with Jeanette Micklem for Performing Arts Bulawayo on Tuesday 23 August at 7.30 in the Robert Sibson Hall, Zimbabwe Academy of Music. Booking at Meikles.

Barbara has chosen a marvellous programme that ranges very widely and pays tribute to her native land as well as including several popular favourites. The first half has arias by Handel including Ombra mai fu (perhaps better known as "Handel's Largo"!), Oh, had I Jubal's lyre and Lascia ch'io pianga, songs by Schubert (Death and the Maiden, To Music and Fr hlingsglaube) and a French group including Faurs Lydia, Chausson's Le Charme and an aria from Massenet's 'Werther' before ending with arias from 'Carmen'. After the interval the emphasis is on America with songs by Samuel Barber, a selection of Copland's delightful 'Old American Songs', spirituals (My Lord, what a morning, Deep River and Ride On, King Jesus) and ending with musicals - I feel pretty, I could have danced all night and more. Barbara is a frequent concert soloist and has performed throughout the United States, South America, and Europe. She recently returned from a concert tour of Paris which included performances at the Madeleine and Notre Dame. She has sung roles with the Center for Contemporary Opera, Opera on the Sound, and the West End Opera Company whilst her orchestral appearances include the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Adirondak Festival at Saranac Lake, the Brooklyn Philharmonia, and at Alice Tully Hall under the baton of Robert Craft. She has also recorded Stravinsky's "Les Noces", "Persephone", and "The Rake's Progress" with Robert Craft and is also a featured soloist on several recordings produced by Musica Viva of New York under the direction of Walter Klauss

This makes for an interesting read girls, take note.....

Do you wear bra for the whole day and even at home? I think we should go bra-free after reading this articles. It's a message to your health. Please pass this to all female friends you know. I think it's important to be aware. For years, a lot of articles with regards to the causes of breast cancer point to an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise as the major links to this disease which happens to be the biggest killer among women during these last two decades. These studies would have been almost credible if it were not for the fact that several women including Linda McCartney who have been religious vegetarians and exercise-freaks have also been unfortunate in suffering breast cancer. Perhaps the most convincing article I have ever read with regards to this matter is one which links breast cancer to the wearing of bras.in the " Bra and Breast Cancer Study " in the United States, it was discovered that women with breast cancer had a history of sporting tighter and longer bra-wearing than did the women who had not ( yet) developed the disease. In fact, virtually all of the cancer group wore bras over 12 hours When a woman wears a tight bra, she subjects her breasts to pressure, closing off the lymphatic pathway from the breast to the nodes. This causes fluid build-up, swelling, tenderness and cyst formation.Toxins must be flushed out via the lymphatics. However, a bra-constricted breast cannot adequately perform this cleansing process, resulting in toxin accumulation in the breast.Truthfully, bras are creating droopy, weak breasts...the breast relies on the bra for artificial support, the body loses its ability to support the breast by itself. This is why many women feel uncomfortable without a bra. What is the solution to breast cancer then? DON'T WEAR A TIGHT BRA! And maybe sleep without them. There is a remarkable success rate for recovery from ibrocystic breast disease within 10 days to two weeks of going bra-free. Many women have tried going bra-less And recorded a miraculous improvement in their health! Bra-burning is no longer a feminist issue...it is now a battle between life and death. We should make others more aware of the hazards of wearing...please pass this e-mail on to everyone you know!

The truth will set you free!

REFLECTORS ON CAR DOORS

The AAZ has queried the need to have red reflectors on car doors, as was rumoured in recent weeks, with the Vehicle Inspection Depots in Bulawayo and Harare. Both VIDs have confirmed that there is no legal requirement to display red reflectors on the shut panels of vehicle doors. (What would happen about those old cars that had "suicide" doors opening the opposite way!)

Despite this we have received reports of motorists being 'fined' by the police for not having these reflectors. In one instance in Harare the ticket issued for the alleged offence turned out to be for throwing litter from a vehicle... In another case near Gweru the motorist was asked to pay a $300 000,00 fine but, on protesting, $100 000,00 was accepted. Not surprisingly no ticket was issued.

There is also often confusion surrounding the requirement for red reflectors to be displayed at the rear of the vehicle. Again VID have confirmed that no additional red reflectors are obligatory if the ones built into the tail light lenses conform to the legal requirement - which is "an area of not less than 1000 sq mm or, if circular, a diameter of 35 mm". Every vehicle constructed in the last 20 years at least has built in reflectors which meet these requirements. Two white reflectors of this size are also required to be displayed at the front of a motor vehicle.
Be advised, however, that the law in South Africa is different and vehicle reflectors in that country have to comply with SABS standards and, in many instances, have to be added even if the reflectors in the tail light lenses are of the required size.

FURTHER TO THE BROEKIE BRIGADE

Well I have to tell you the story, I dropped to my knees with laughter. We had the two elder offspring home for the university vacs and big brother and big sister share a bathroom. Brother was horrified to see the thongs adorning the towel rail and asked sister what on earth they were. 'Undies' she replied, 'They are disgusting' says he, 'wearing those must be like flossing!' All mobile users pay attention if you receive a phone call and your mobile phone displays (XALAN) on the screen don't answer the call, END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY, if you answer the call, your phone will be infected by a virus. This virus will erase all IMEI and IMSI information from both your phone and your SIM card, which will make your phone unable to connect with the telephone network. You will have to buy a new phone. "We have recently been advised that an elderly man has supplied a money collection box to a certain shop in town and claims that he is from SOAP (Supporting Old Age Pensioners) and is collecting the money on their behalf. He collects the box on a monthly basis, empties it and then returns it. We have no knowledge of who this man could be and would like the public and business owners to be aware of the situation should he approach them. He may even have a few collection boxes around!!!
SOAP's official collection boxes are at :
Hillside Hardware
Induna Arts
Greenvale Supermarket
Monkey Grill
Busters Sports Club
River Cafe
Any other businesses who have a 'SOAP' collection box should please contact me on 242455 or 091 322 624 in order that we may arrange collection of any funds.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Bulawayo public for their continued support in our endeavours to help the elderly.

Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.

I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.
