Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No.12 in C sharp minor
Rachmaninov: Thirteen Preludes, Opus 32

Both concerts: Robert Sibson Hall, Zimbabwe Academy of Music. Booking at Meikles.
Kristian Chong has established himself as one of Australia's leading younger pianists and is currently based in London, where he studies with Christopher Elton and Piers Lane at the Royal Academy of Music and, indeed, it is Piers who recommended him to Performing Arts. He has recently received the Dip.RAM, the Academy's highest performing accolade, the Walter MacFarren award for the best postgraduate final recital and the Dorothy Grimstead Memorial Award for the most outstanding returning postgraduate student. Prior to that he had been named as the 2002 South Australian Emerging Artist of the year. The Australian Herald Sun wrote that Kristian "is the brightest star in the heady firmament of young pianists emerging from Australia today..." and The Age (also Australia) said: "Kristian Chong is a pianist of impressive talent and sensitivity. He shows a level of maturity way beyond his years, a factor often missing in younger artists, yet maintains the high level of excitement which drives the music along to exhilarating heights." Just a few weeks ago Kristian played part of the programme that we shall be hearing in the Fairfield Hall and a review had this to say: "Two substantial items occupied today's programme, the first was Shostakovich's Prelude and Fugue No.24 in D minor, in which Chong captivated us right from the majestic opening. The other piece was really thirteen pieces, Rachmaninov's second, dazzling set of Preludes Op.32 of which the tenth was the composer's favourite. With total commitment, Chong fluently sailed through these complex works with ever a deft touch and without blemish. Every hurdle was taken in his stride. This was playing with finesse and strength in the best proportions. Chong has attracted a great deal of attention, and justified attention, in his native Australia and you can bet that his is a name of which we shall be hearing a great deal more."

Regarding 'Mars Spectacular - this has already happened - in 2003. Someone has got the years mixed up. Mars will again be close to earth on 31 October but not as close as it was in 2003.

SW Radio Africa - Zimbabwe's independent voice - is very pleased to announce that we have been saved from closure.

We will therefore be able to continue broadcasting on Medium Wave 1197kHz from 5 - 7am every morning. This signal is clearly heard throughout South Africa and over most of Zimbabwe. Programming can also be accessed worldwide, 24 hours a day, at www.swradioafrica.com where our broadcasts are streamed live and also archived.

We regret that due to the relentless jamming of our Shortwave signal by the government we are unable to provide this service at the moment.

AMUSING NEWS FROM N.Z.

RONIT

I had been in NZ for a few weeks when someone lent me their car. Feeling full of trepidation I decided to fill 'er up and take a spin. But first I checked that there were no petrol queues! In Bulawayo just before I left, there would be between 50 and 300 cars parked in my road waiting for the petrol tanker to arrive. This went on for up to 4 weeks at a time. NO petrol. No joke.

So you can imagine my joy on pulling into the first garage I found. There was NO queue. Amazing.

So I sat by the pump waiting. A young man knocked on my window and asked could he be of some service. Rather imperiously I wave him to the back of the vehicle and say, "Fill 'er up please." I sit back.

He looked at me, politely asked me to step out. I'm worried now. What have I done wrong? Can garage owners fine you?

Well madam, he said ever so politely. First you push these buttons, then you take this nozzle, you put it in here and you squeeze. Petrol comes out.
Oh.
You mean I must do it myself? (In Africa this is done for you for two reasons -- drivers may try to scoot off without paying (!) and most of us are too dumb anyway!)
Upon hearing that, he says, You from South Africa. I nod ashamedly.
OK, I'll do it for you, he smiled.
Oh, what a joy to be in New Zealand!

I wonder if anyone would be interested in having a personalised CD with music of their own choice? I can't do the classics, but popular music from the 50's, 60's, 70's and so on. You can get about twenty tunes on a normal CD. I don't profess to have every tune ever brought out, but if you give me a list of, say, 30 tunes, I could do quite a high percentage of them.
This would make a super gift for someone to recall the good old days.
I can be contacted at : glyntonybw@zol.co.zw

TROPICA NURSERY
4 Gibbs Rd, Glencoe. Tel: 288873
Although Byo has water rationing once again - all is not lost as far as gardening is concerned. We just have to re-organise and dig out all the unused containers that I am sure most people have lying around in sheds and lost under shrubs! We have a huge selection of plants that are suitable for containers and have just received a large amount of clay pots. We have also planted up several pots with palms, succulents, pretty low-growing perennials and grasses.
A few tips for container gardening:
Buy a good potting mix. Choose the correct size container for the plant. Use an organic or inorganic mulch to discourage weeds and to retain moisture. Container grouping is better than having them dotted around all over the place. Fertilise regularly - preferably with a liquid fertiliser Repot plants when necessary. If you are a bit confused about how to go about it we are here to offer advice and select the correct plants and the pot that would be best suited for the plant of your choice. If you want to re-vamp your old pots and plants we can help with that too.

BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEMS - UNDER THE NAME OF : INHEP DIGITAL SECURITY:

There is a company in Bulawayo who is professional in the burglar alarm systems world, and who can make you feel at ease once again, protecting you against all the outside elements If you need an alarm system, read on:

The basic kits come in three varied forms - but all with 4 or 8 zone panels, keypads, panic buttons, battery & siren. Available are sensor alarms, (which include pet immune sensors i.e. for animals moving around at night but the alarm won't go off if the animal is less than about 10 kgs in weight). We have outdoor beams, infra red beams, vibration sensors, strobe lights, petty-moons (which are put into corners and have a 90 degree radius). We would come around to the place where the alarm system has to be situated, and work out the best way to secure the premises without it being a problem to the users. We quote the customer, the customer pays a deposit if the quote is acceptable, and we install the system for the customer, in 2 or 3 working days depending upon access to the premises, and the largeness of the job. The systems are guaranteed for 6 months, and the person who installs the system is very professional, and works alone, therefore ensuring secrecy and security. For professional advice and compassionate assistance in this matter, contact me.

HELP
We are sorry to repeat our plea to anyone who may know someone who, in turn, may know someone else who has a cottage or Garden flat or similar accommodation they are toying with renting out as a "respectable" rent to an elderly civil-service-pensioner couple. Ideally we seek Suburbs, Kumalo, Ilanda or Famona but certainly do not limit ourselves thereto (We are listed for Garden Park but so are many others who are above us on the list). The rent on our present flat has been bounced up about 260% without taking into account the Flat Owners levy which includes rates and security, the excuse for bouncing the rent increase.
If there is a kind soul out there with the necessary information or knowledge sought please phone Judy or Ron on Byo 886294 or Jenne on 091 275 940

KOI FISH :
We received (and are still receiving) numerous calls from people wanting to buy koi. We re-homed/sold the required number the day of the advert to 2 new ponds. So many people have phoned since and asked if they could have "just 1 or 2 koi, even" and often to go with the one or two they already have. There seems to be quite a few people interested in koi but lack of comms. Is anyone interested in establishing a central point for exchanging news, views and tips etc, details of sales/swops (fry/fish, 2nd hand equipment or anything similar) and casual/social meetings to chat re same? Not a club or society and no subs, costs, official requirements etc.
If so, please call or sms 091 301013 or e-mail petro@zol.co.zw

Can anyone help? Please contact Shirley or Vernon Tarr - work nos 67041 - 4.

The Nesbitt Castle is desperately looking for SHERRY Glasses..
I have looked all over town and to no avail. If anyone has SHERRY Glasses surplus to their needs and is willing to Sell them to us we would be very happy.

"Household Goods Wanted -

I am looking for the following items -
1 Lounge Suite
1 Bedroom Suite
1 x 2 door Fridge
and 1 4 plate stove.

Tel - Mornings only - 232401 - 230696 or 230684"

Thanx to the many people who responded to my ad. for a display cabinet and apologies to those that I was unable to visit due the petrol situation. However, it has become obvious that "display cabinet" was the wrong description as all offered or discussed have been too large. It seems that I need something between a printers tray and 'stairway-to-heaven' but much larger, much deeper and glass fronted plus suitable for (heavy) wall-mounting (and thanx to Poppy for helping with that description) to house a collection of miniature porcelain. Any ideas or suggestions that might fit,
please contact 242685.

Please, please: does anyone have gas cylinders that they could give or lend us? We now have enough gas to keep going (cooking for our 60 displaced people!) for a while, but we desperately need empties so we can fill up while we can.
Thank you!
